It's time . addressing the whole DW situation , siiigh .
I was originally gonna do this post WAY earlier , but i tend to state opinions and immediately change them + be way too overly dramatic about them in the heat of the situation , besides i was way too upset and demotivated to make a thorough post about this in the first place .
Even now I'm way too upset to talk about this but it needs to be done . I'd rather people know my standing on this situation before they go and follow me for my DW content .
First of all , does this mean I'll stop posting DW ? Nope ! I'm slowly losing interest , but i won't be stopping until way later and definitely not because of the situation . I can't really play the game much anyways even if i wanted to , my GPU is actively dying & in need of a replacement soon so Im unable to play most of Roblox overall — And I'm supposed to save space for aseprite which I'm buying by the end of this month when i get money on my visa - so nope , not gonna be able to touch DW even if i wanted to .
So to start things first , when i first heard about this i was TERRIBLY upset . I was reaching extreme measures of how i shouldn't have even felt over a simple game . I was splitting , breaking down , being overcome by anger , guilt & god knows what else — Safe to say i refused to address all of this for a while because i simply couldn't handle the fact my mental health was literally collapsing on itself over this .
I unfortunately don't have nearly the time to fully read the doc , and to be frank I'd get triggered very easily reading it , so summaries are completely welcomed , and THANK YOU if you do that cause knowing nothing about the victims besides maybe like 1% of Joji's case makes me seem a little ignorant of the whole situation . . .
Now . I'm gonna be brutally honest here , and some of you guys may not like it — Sorry .
I'm not on neither of the sides . I refuse to side with anybody here .
You all remember the Zeal situation . While chances are thin and Qwel is clearly being a fucking idiot trying to address all of this , chances of her being innocent are still never zero so PLEASE stop trying to completely villanize her .
I agree , she isn't addressing this correctly , she has done wrong - But that is no reason to completely villanize her and even attack people who still support her .
I don't support her , and well , many people don't forgive her at all . Personally not even i exactly know if i forgive her yet , but i want you all to be patient .
Things like this need time . Especially if it has to do with something illegal , something that is taken to court . It takes TIME . I understand many people alongside me are upset , but assuming immediately and jumping to conclusions will not get us anywhere .
Please , try taking a break if all of this affects you overwhelmingly much . I did , and I'm really glad I did . We all deserve a break , especially realizing that the game we loved and supported for years ended up with a developer like this .
And please — Don't be ashamed for still liking the game . I personally can't leave myself yet either , and neither should you if it isn't supporting Qwel .
Okay , this is everything i have to say , i think . . . Cause frankly my hands are starting to hurt + it's 7 in the bloody morning . . . I'm REALLY starving to get some food right now i spent like a good 30 minutes writing allat 😭
Racism in Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Revolutionary Messaging.
yes rgu depicts racism
no, none of the characters are white
"do you mean these japanese people are being racist to these south asian characters?" yes
do you know anything about japan outside of popular anime and the image it presents to international tourists? it was racist in 1997. it is still racist in 2026. the conservative government (the so-called Liberal Democratic Party) are leaning into Japanese nationalism and whipping up hate against foreigners, using them as scapegoats. people who are ethnically Korean who have lived in Japan for generations are treated as second-class citizens. to be not ethnically japanese is to be foreign. to be foreign is to be other.
racism, xenophobia, and prejudice against foreigners (especially people with darker skin) are everyday realities in japan. children who look different (especially bc of darker skin) deal with bullying in schools, and getting treated differently does not stop after they graduate.
"are anthy and akio presented in ways that are somewhat limited and stereotypical?" yes. they're both clearly depicted as indian. anthy wears a bindi. (she's the rose bride, associated w/ the color red, red the color brides wear at Hindu weddings.) akio also wears a bindi. this is something that indian men don't do. the creators got some very basic cultural details wrong.
i believe anthy & akio's inclusion is well-intentioned, despite being imperfectly executed, and apparently formed with no expert input from Indian creators or sensitivity readers. still, the creators know what they're doing when they're including these differences in two characters who are so integral to the plot & message of the show.
anthy's character was inspired by the indian (south asian) character in the original gundam series, which takes place in an era where space colonies are a metropolitan mix of people from all over the earth.
Lalah Sune (ララァ・スン, Raraa Sun?, also spelled as Lalah Sun[note 1]) is a character introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam. Lalah has an I
rgu, as it is with its flaws, is still better for having dark skinned indian representation. anthy is one of the most iconic and recognizable characters from 90s/00s anime. she is also one of the most beloved.
(and it is a big deal for dark-skinned girls to have an anime character they can relate to. a character they can cosplay and get recognized as.)
i will say one of the things that made images of utena and anthy so visually striking was that i had never seen an anime that depicted an interracial couple as the main pairing. an interracial couple between a japanese character and a dark-skinned, non-japanese character. i have not seen it since.
anthy's plight being ignored by everyone else in school makes sense in the context of racism and xenophobia. she's not like the other girls. she doesn't fit in because she's not 'really' one of them, not 'really' japanese.
anthy is bullied in school not because the creators of RGU nefariously wish to punish her. they are realistically depicting what it is like to be dark-skinned and not japanese in an elite japanese prep school.
she has no friends. she's caught up in this odd 'rose bride' thing that apparently forces her to date members of the student council. she is repeatedly slapped by members of the student council, and other students. no one ever tells a teacher.
when anthy is not forthcoming about why she endures this treatment, people quickly get frustrated. they stop asking questions, they stop trying to help. utena does this, very early in the series. it's hard to watch, because once you've seen the entire series, you realize how cruel it is. (unintentionally, of course. utena's incurious ignorance is still cruel)
the sterotypes anthy and akio play into reflect how people like them are really perceived in japanese society (and often, in the world more broadly. but utena is a show about japan. otori academic, for all of its european-style architecture and trimmings, is still a japanese school in japan. stylized and fantastical--still japan. terrible things happen at this school. do you think that perhaps this is a societal critique?)
anthy and akio are both perceived by other characters in the story as exotic. many people find them alluring and seductive. their different sexes mean that this plays out differently for each of them.
as a man, and as a legal adult, akio has choice in who he decides to pursue sexual relationships with. he leverages his appealing exoticism to move up socially and assimilate. he becomes acting chairman of the school by becoming engaged to the chairman's daughter (and by fucking the chairman's wife). No one coerces Akio. He's firmly in control. he coerces others. (and his leadership role at the school makes this a lot easier to do completely unchecked)
the horror of akio comes primarily from him being a patriarchal figure. he is acting the way a powerful man is supposed to act. we SEE that! we see japanese teachers sexually harassing their students! (Juri and Mikki both narrowly avoid getting preyed on by teachers. Juri outwits her harasser. Mikki's sister PUSHES HIS TEACHER DOWN THE STAIRS and CALLS IN DEATH THREATS.) it is blink-and-you-miss-it, but it is THERE
akio being an abuser is not one of the ways in which he is othered. his abuse of students is what makes him THE SAME. he is a patriarchal abuser who looks a certain way. but there are many others like him. he's the most central to anthy and utena's story. but even within the small world of this school, he is one of many.
anthy does not get to make choices about who is allowed to have access to her. she's a girl. she's a child. she is not independent--she's entirely reliant on her family (which consists of only one person). she is young and trusting. she wants love and acceptance from her family. it takes her a while to accept that there's something wrong. (that's part of her resentment for utena--utena isn't trapped in the same system she is. utena is ignorant of what anthy has to deal with. but utena's outsider perspective in her home w/ her brother forces anthy to realize that there is something twisted and wrong about how her brother treats her)
even before we begin to understand the extent of the abuse anthy goes through--we see, very early on, how the rose bride is treated.
if someone tried to treat utena the same way, she would speak up. if someone tried to treat nanami this way, it would cause more of a scene. people would try to intervene more.
anthy's self-defeatism comes from living in a society where her worth has already been clearly communicated to her. there is a heartbreaking logic to it even aside from the surreal, fantastical, mythical, mysterious origins of the rose bride and the prince.
i do believe rgu ends with an uplifting message for anthy, and girls who look like her. utena didn't give up on her. utena loves her unconditionally. loves her dearly for who she is. and with that affirmation from utena, that steady support from her, it was easy for anthy to leave her abusive family and to start a new life with her lover and friend. utena showed SOLIDARITY for anthy's struggle, even though their struggles were not exactly the same. utena refuses to live in a world where anthy is left to eternally suffer.
TL;DR:
"wait, are any of the characters in utena white? because there are themes in this show that seem super-racist" DID YOU THINK YOU WERE THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD TURN INTO A CAR?
POSTSCRIPT: Revolutionary Girl Utena, in addition to taking strong inspiration from Funeral Parade of Roses, is also heavily influenced by the student revolts of the late 1960s:
so egg on the face of every casual anime fan who says that revolutionary girl utena was not about or inspired by real political revolution. just because you're ignorant of context and history doesn't mean that an animated television show from Japan is shallow and apolitical.
the creators of RGU want you to learn revolutionary history and read theory. they're not going to hand you all the answers to what a future society will look like while we sit on our asses and watch tv.
the ending of Adolescence of Utena is a world of possibility. the show's intention was to allow us to imagine a world where utena and anthy can live freely.
if you watched RGU and thought: "there wasn't a political message: only one girl was saved." THAT IS A POLITICAL MESSAGE! Anthy Himemiya being a girl who COULD be saved, a girl who WAS saved, is a huge political statement when you stop to remember the context she exists in!!!!
"take my revolution" means fighting against oppression. fighting against racism, fighting against misogyny, fighting against homophobia, fighting against exploitative systems that harm and disempower children and students.
(did u know that Japan has a politically functioning communist party? unlike the USA. anyways #TheMoreYouKnow)
Not sure if you've heard the news by now or if it has been shared on Tumbr at all yet, but, since I've seen a ton of fans in this app, I feel like this needs to be told here as well: Rumors have been going around for a while that the ENTIRE MLB Voice Actor Cast for the Italian Dub is going to be permanently replaced from Season 7 Onwards, all of a sudden, with no valid reasoning or explaination.
The other day, a bunch of those VAs have unfortunately confirmed these rumors with a heavy heart: they've been surprised as well and they decided to speak up about this. It's happening after 11 years of incredible work at giving the characters a Voice and a Soul!! It's a wild move to suddently change the Whole Cast while the show is still running!💔
Not only ALL our beloved Main Characters 's voices are going to be replaced, but Every Side Character, Villains, Kwamis and the New Ones (introduced in s6) as well! Litterally EVERYONE!! They're changing the entire Studio that'll be in charge of dubbing the Show! (The new Studio might be the one who was in charge of dubbing the Tokyo Special, which is also when people started worrying about the main series, since every VA was different all of a sudden)
I agree sometimes change is good or maybe something happens that a VA needs to be replaced for an emergency or just them moving on, but in this case it's neither of those. It has been confirmed that this change is happening due to unknown decisions 'from above'. It's unnatural because Litterally Everyone is being forced to leave their role all of a sudden and they themselves don't know why.
It's possibly a change of greedy nature (allegedly, we still don't know the exact reasonings), since a lot of these VAs, who are getting replaced, are really some of the Best we have in Italy and they've expressed their willingness to continue dubbing these characters!❤️🩹
It's truly heartbreaking and disrespectful towards not only the Fans who grew up with these voices, but also towards these incredible Actors who have poured their heart into giving a voice to our favorite characters, have grown fond of em themselves and seen them grow as the story progressed!😔
Voice Acting is part of the Beauty of Animations, Movies, Shows and Stories of all kind, it's part of the Magic, part of the Soul of each character being brought to Life, it's a piece of the ART!! 🎨
I know nothing is going to be affected to you, since you likely watch the show in other dubs, but if they're doing it with the Italian one, who's stopping them from doing it with your dubs as well? (I've heard that apparently it already happened to the Turkish dub?!?) We need to unite and make our voices heard, to avoid this happening to this dub and any other in the future!🤲

Since I mentioned Shauna making Nat butcher Ben in my previous post, I wanted to elaborate more on that. This is yet another time Shauna has been called cruel (which, yes, she was), but it held deeper meaning than just being cruel for cruelty's sake.
Let's recontextualize the scene. Shauna had just been made leader, and everyone is upset at Nat and expects her to be punished. So Shauna is the one who has to find a punishment for killing Ben. And to Shauna, there is no worse punishment than being forced to walk into her shoes: being the butcher.
Yes it is cruel, but it's also a punishment that fits the crime. Something that will satisfy everyone mad at Nat and prevent a far worse punishment (like death). Just like when Shauna suggested Nat should be the one shooting Ben, she wants Nat to experience what she went through. Having to butcher Javi, someone Shauna cared about, parallels Nat now having to butcher Ben, whom she bonded with. In a twisted way, Shauna wants Nat to understand and connect with her trauma, by making her go through the same. And I do think Nat's refusal to be the one expected to execute Ben since she was the hunter is partially why Shauna made her butcher Ben. Because when it came to butcher Javi, she wasn't allowed to refuse and instead ask for a draw. It's vindicative but also coming from a place of hurt, and wanting Nat to know how she felt.
But, even if it was cruel, Shauna wasn't unsympathetic to Nat. When Nat asked to butcher Ben, Shauna stayed with her and guided her, providing assistance and even a trick to make it easier by covering Ben's face, similar to how she had to cover her eyes while butchering Javi.
That's the thing with Shauna. She can be both cruel and empathetic. But due to her trauma, she forces herself to swallow back her sympathy for others and over-exaggerate her cruel side, to protect herself. As I said in an earlier post, she isn't " cartoonishly evil", she is "performatively evil". See the contrast between the scene where she said Nat will "prepare the feast" compared to when she helps Nat butcher Ben. Around others, she looked gleeful about it, but alone with Nat, she was impassive, but judging by her demeanour, sympathetic to Nar. She just can't show it.
And I do think it made them connect more, by now sharing a similar trauma and knowing how it feels to have to butcher someone you cared about. Hence why, as adults, Nat decided to help Shauna butcher Adam's corpse, because she can now relate to Shauna and how awful it is to do.
So, yeah. It WAS cruel, but came from a place of hurt and a desire to be understood in her trauma by someone who previously refused to share the same burden. And in the end, Nat did come to understand Shauna better, as we saw in the adult tl. So, 1 point in favour of shaunanat!
The frustrating thing about tumblr isn’t the idea that the userbase at large is more racist, transphobic, ableist, and other such bigotries than other social media platforms because society at large has these prejudices pervade all aspects of civilization. The frustrating thing about tumblr is that it specifically promotes itself as a welcome, inclusive, and progressive space. Twitter doesn’t present itself as a friendly, respectful community (the fact that it’s owned by elon isn’t doing it any favors either.) it’s simply twitter. Instagram, Facebook similarly don’t package their content in the same veneer as Tumblr. Encountering racist transphobes on twitter isn’t surprising because it’s twitter. Encountering them here where the like button displays the progressive Pride flag is what rubs ppl the wrong way. It’s like going from a dive bar to a nice coffee shop and seeing the same exact clientele as before. This isn’t even to mention that the staff are on the same timing as well
