Baru Cormorant and Utena Tenjō:
"no, it's fine. I'm just gonna dismantle the master's house with the master's tools."
friends/allies/lovers: ...
Baru & Utena, gesticulating at the master's house that surrounds them: "they built all this, didn't they? obviously they're powerful tools! what could go wrong?"
i am thinking about parallels btwn Baru Cormorant and Utena Tenjō again
Empire of Masks / RGU crossover adaptation (setting fusion) (the characters are so parallel it would be pointless to include both sets of characters imo)
(holds together best for 1st novel of Empire of Masks series but hear me out)
The colonial school on Taranoke is Ohtori Academy
Letters from the End of the World come from various members of the cryptoarchy behind the Masked Emperor, all adopting the ficticious persona of the Masked Emperor
The equivalent of the Student Council members are imperial functionaries below the level of cryptarch (or merely pretending to be--unclear to audience & narrative POV character)
there's no crossover between characters bc they're so alike. maybe there are hints that they might be reincarnations of these same characters
Baru, our naïve protagonist who wants to free her country from colonial rule by becoming part of the empire is OBVIOUSLY the Utena parallel. (Utena, who wanted to save damsels by becoming a prince. bc obviously the partriarchy is so strong that you have to become part of it to save people who are harmed by it. you see the logic?)
Baru wants to break the world's shell. Make the Emperor's mask crack, and the empire crumble. maybe at some point she realizes she must dismantle the entire empire to make Taranoke safe.
At the end of Book 1 (spoilers) Baru chooses the bad ending. Utena would have done anything to save Anthy. (Tain Hu is by no means a perfect Anthy parallel but by god are there similarities)
WAIT. is Tain Hu Juri? Is Baru's second cousin that she has a crush on Wakaba? Is Aminata Anthy or Wakaba or Juri or some fusion of all three....
hmm. much 2 consider
in the subsequent books....
the imperial navy is the ohtori academy parallel? or the parallelism is extended to the navy...
(Spoilers for Book 2):
and the crazy nuclear-powered sea monster ghost thingies that can possess you--those are the spirits of the dead students from the Mikage Seminar??????
if this strikes a chord w/ anyone else please take this idea and run with it.
baru's secretary is totally the sensitive piano boy, mikki
but in this adaptation he'd have a sister who supports an independent arudwynn.
and he would be crushing on tain hu (anthy parallel) instead of baru (utena parallel)
yeah i guess since tain hu is sacrificed/executed that makes her the most rose bride -like. especially since (like the rose bride's) her suffering was not inevitable. tain hu has carved out some independence, and is a duelist in her own right. (maybe she's a rose bride who's already dueled her prince & run him thru. she is the sole heir to a duchy. how's that happen? hm. interesting. maybe she stabbed him in the back during one of Aurdwynn's many wars for independence)
and that makes Aminata definitely the Juri parallel. They both wear military uniforms. brusque and formidable but secretly nurturing a lesbian crush. parallels btwn Juri's locket and Aminata's shrine. swordswomen, duelists. independently, outwardly projecting strength.
(it would be HILARIOUS if Aminata saved a lock of Baru's hair after she got it shorn for lice. like in this version she wears a secret locket containing a stolen lock of Baru's hair and a dead louse)

this technically is true but I think this also perfectly encapsulates why I am inherently distrustful of like. “”cozy”” “turn your brain off” fiction lmfao. like okay WHO gets to turn their brain off and who has to suffer through bigoted caricatures of themselves while everyone else is having cozy silly no brain time 😐

I am fucking loving how shit-scared the UK right-wing is of a man with a bin on his head. Now that Count Binface might actually win the Clacton byelection they're desperately trying to smear him with such gems as:
"He's anti-Brexit!" Good.
"He's anti-Trump!" Good.
"He's anti-establishment!" At this point I think you're just trying to make me like him more.
"His manager once called Farage a horrible cunt!" Well Farage *is* a horrible cunt, what's your point?
"He's making a joke of British politics!" Well that's very appropriate given that current British politics *are* a fucking joke.
"He's a left-wing liberal elitist!" I don't know if you can be all of those things at once, but I do know that Count Binface isn't the one getting millions in donations from cryptocurrency billionaires sooooooo...
Vote change. Vote Binface.
I always think of the description I saw years ago: Self-imposed deadlines don't help me, because I know the person who set them, and they're full of shit.
Give yourself the treat before you start. I'm serious. And ideally during the task and afterwards too.
Executive dysfunction comes from a lack of available dopamine. Common advice is wrong. You need to provide your own dopamine before you can start. Otherwise you're trying to run your car on empty.
"But what if I still don't do it" well you already weren't getting it done anyway. Now you have a little treat. Try again later.
You deserve kindness and care even when you aren't being productive.
(Also read How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis)
I give my students a LOT of techniques for starting writing when it feels overwhelming or daunting, but one of them is exactly this: dopamine load BEFOREHAND. It may sound weird to people on tumblr dot com, but a lot of people seriously struggle with executive dysfunction when it comes to writing literally anything, to the extent that it can cause such symptoms as panic, depression, and AI chatbot use.
I usually suggest this technique as a "Reverse Pomodoro." In the original Pomodoro, you work for 25 minutes and then take a break for 5 minutes (the times vary, but that's the essential ratio). People with executive dysfunction often find this insurmountable, and they get even more frustrated, and then the task seems even more difficult. So instead, flip those times.
FIRST, spend 25 minutes doing something energizing and engaging that you like to do. Not scrolling social media passively, not watching tv, not napping. Try something like colouring, doing yoga, running/walking around the block, talking about your favourite tv show with someone in real time, playing with the dog or cat, making and eating a lovely sandwich, hula hooping, something active. Having a little treat absolutely falls in this category!
(on the subject of little treats: refusing yourself food until you do work is for fucking Puritans and you can be kinder to yourself)
Then, after 25 minutes (or however long it takes to eat the sandwich or finish the yoga routine, it doesn't have to be exact), spend 5 minutes writing (or doing whatever you're struggling to start). Most people can coax themselves into doing something they find difficult for five minutes, if they have already filled up the joy/energy/engagement bucket. You can put a timer on for the 5 minutes if you want, or if you find that annoying, just work for as long as you like.
The other key is: don't push yourself to keep going when you're frustrated or tired—that will just reinforce the negative belief that you already have, which tells you that this task is painful to do, and needs to be avoided. If you've commonly had to force yourself to do this kind of task, that's likely part of why you think of it as painful and have trouble starting it now. Also, you should just, at a basic level, try not to put yourself in pain for the sake of productivity. So just do it till the good feelings run out. Then start hula hooping or colouring again for another 25 minutes. When the tank's refilled, try another 5 minutes of work, if you can. Adjust times to taste.
Not every technique works for everyone, but I've seen this one work for many students who are genuinely and seriously disabled by executive dysfunction. And many people find themselves getting more and more excited and engaged in the "difficult" task—because the good feelings from the hula hooping carry over, and because they're suddenly able to do the task without feeling pain, and feel accomplishment without feeling pain.
One of the central contradictions of transmisogyny is that society and the state seem to put so much more energy into policing the boundaries of womanhood, an oppressed class, compared to manhood, a oppressor class. This seems to make no sense. Surely it should be easier to move into an oppressed class than out of one, no?
The explanation is that it is not "womanhood" whose boundaries are so harshly policed, but a smaller category of "women worth protecting". That is, trans women are treated as women (held to impossible beauty standards, sexualised, talked over, underpaid, etc etc) even while they are denied the protections that "women worth protecting" are able to access, protections that include the right to name your own oppression by calling yourself what you are: a woman.
It is actually very easy to become a woman (in the sense of the social class). All it takes is for an average cis man to sincerely wear "women's clothes" one time (i.e. not as part of a performance), and he will be experience a whole load of misogyny for an age thereafter. You have to be a cis man with an incredibly high social status to get away with this. It's correspondingly very hard to become a man (the social class) after you have been in the class of "woman", it will take many months and demonstations of his commitment to manhood for the man who wore "women's clothes" one time to fully return there.
Similarly, if a someone who is viewed as an average cis man suddenly comes out as a woman, she will find two things happen pretty much simultaneously. First, she immediately becomes a (particularly marginalised) woman: she will instantly be subject to sexually invasive questions, will instantly incur the scorn of people who had previously liked her, will have her clothing criticised, her work disparaged, etc etc. And second, as a consequence of now being a woman, she will find that her sincere statements about herself are immediately discredited and contradicted: "No, you're not a woman" will be a common response. She would've been taken more seriously if she had come out as being from Alpha Centauri, because she would then at least still be a man, and to be a woman who is not "worth protecting" is to be denied the right to speak on your own inner life. It is a great irony that the contradiction, "No, you're not a woman," is the very thing that demonstrates that you are one.
Black women, South Asian women, Arab women, fat women, autistic women, gay women, working-class women, sex workers, and many other groups of women have found themselves denied access to the category of "women worth protecting" in various cultures and at various times. Trans women happen to be on the frontline of this fight right now in much of Europe and North America.
If you believe that bathroom bans etc are the state "protecting women", you have to ask why the state is suddenly so interested in protecting an oppressed class, when a big part of being an oppressed class is being denied the state's protection. Could it be because the state is not protecting "women" but rather the slightly different class of "women worth protecting"? Which is to say, that the specific oppression of "women not worth protecting" is the whole point.
