Hi, dusting off this blog after a year of disuse to post my thoughts now that the Oshi no Ko manga has ended. I've been very quiet on here about my opinion on the manga and what I think. And now that I've read the final chapter, I feel the writers final intent is...
Spite.
Just spite. Almost the whole final chapter emanates this kind of forced-smile malice that makes me feel like the person who wrote it regrets ever putting themselves into a position to do so. Not just speedrunning to the conclusion, but wishing to burn everything that got them to this point. This chapter contains character development so pointlessly negative that it almost spoils my entire opinion of the series retroactively.
I still like the premise of this series and the characters that were presented to us in the first few arcs, but, man, its a long road of missed opportunity, forced plot threads, missing character development, and drama for the sake of drama.
I still like the idea of Aqua/Gorou I have in my head. Maybe I'll write some more drabbles and move on to an AU fic but... I'm really not sure. I'm really soured on most of the back-half of the series. I'm not likely to ever RP here ever again. I hope that someday the fandom is able to do the justice to Akane, Kana, and Ruby that canon has completely deprived them of.

Its been a busy week and, uhm, Mihoyo finally got their hooks in me when they released a new character (Aventurine) that's like half of the OCs I've ever made all thrown into a blender and is also a perfect FC for one of them. Seeing him all over my circles on Tumblr and Twitter was enough to get me started playing Honkai Star Rail (my first gacha!) last Saturday and now...

'Gorou' stood slack-jawed and unnerved at the door that had appeared before him, the signed invitation in his right hand almost crumpled from his fingers clenching in defense. He looked around the rundown hovel that he called his office, half-expecting that some Fixer or rival Syndicate had set this whole thing up and were just toying to get a reaction of him before they...
He paused, chuckling at his own thoughts. No matter how many thousands of times he's died and come back as someone else, the fear of death never quite seemed to go away. He shook his head and looked at his hands held out in front of him.
"Nothing ventured in this town... What's another 18 years thrown away again, anyway?"
He laughed, a bit louder at his disregard for his own life. He really should be used to it, shouldn't he? Whatever did make it so difficult for him to take risks, for him to do anything different? For him to stop clinging to the past?
He caught a glimpse of his reflection in the door's knob. He knew exactly why, even if he wanted to deny it. Maybe it was the gods, maybe it was karma, but every time he came back, it was always with that face. The face that wouldn't let him forget how he got in this cyclical mess to begin with...
There's hesitation before he touches the door again, soon gritting his teeth in the resentment of his own visage. His hand grabs hold of the door's knob with a choking grip, and he steps into the library to answer his invitation.

"Tea...?" She half expected Aqua would have thrown a tantrum the way Ruby usually did when she got her down from the table or somewhere high up. Her twins really couldn't be more different, could they? Ruby was a normal baby from everything she could look up on her own, but Aqua was practically like a tiny adult with the way he managed to speak so early and his reserved nature. To her, it just meant he and Ruby were clearly prodigies!
"Huh, can toddlers have tea?" She can't see a reason why not, it's not like coffee and some children had tea when they visited their grandparents. At least, in movies they did given her lack of experience with kids and family. "Okay! It's gonna be super bitter though, are you sure you don't want sugar with it to help?" Getting the tea box from the cabinet, Ai reached over for a mug and placed the tea bag in the cup.
It makes her smile though, maybe he wants to try it after seeing everyone around him drink tea. Playing grown up, maybe? The younger kids in her foster home did that, the ones that did play pretend anyway. "When you want something, you can just ask mama! I'll always say yes to you because you and Ruby are the cutest kids in the world!"
The toddler absolutely beamed at Ai's words of praise, and swayed excitedly back and forth as she declared him and his sister to be the "cutest kids in the world". Aqua never demanded Ai's attention really at all like Ruby did, but he almost never disliked it either.
"Thank you, Ai! I won't ask for too much."
But Aqua couldn't help himself from going on, wanting to give at least a little justification and reassurance that giving him tea wouldn't cause anything bad to happen to him.
"Its okay for children to have tea. The recommended dose of caffeine for a child is one hundred milligrams per day. A cup of green tea is half that."
Aqua kept smiling ear-to-ear, proud of remembering his toxicology classes from his previous life... His previous life...
"Oh crap. Crap crap crap! I've done it now!"
Ai's son suddenly looks down and uneasy for a moment, his eyes darting around for a second like he's trying to find a toy he's only just realized he lost, a stark contract from how he had just spouted off some oddly specific medical knowledge.
"Think of something, anything--Ai knows about the books I've been reading at daycare, right?"
He finally glances back up at his mother, giving another smile, this one now much more nervous and fake looking than the last.
"At least, that's what I read in a book."

Ai was indeed taking her afternoon nap. Some would joke it was beauty sleep for an idol like Ai, but the reality was that juggling motherhood and fame at a young age left her with more sleepless nights than she'd like to admit. If it wasn't for the beauty of naps, surely she'd be a complete wreck by now!
However, her nap was suddenly interrupted when she heard the sound of a beep. she doesn't remember that Miyako had made herself tea before she went down for a nap, and so her mind thinks immediately to fire alarm. Did she forget to turn something off or, worse, did the kids get into something!? It makes Ai rush out of bed, half expecting a burning fire only to breath a sigh of relief at little Aqua with the kettle.
Wait...He's so little, how did he know how to operate a kettle!? She swears her son must be a child prodigy, because he showed he was far too smart for his age, but it makes her happy to know she had such talented and brilliant children.
"Aqua, what are you doing?" She talks sweetly to her son, lifting him up in her arms to set him down and away from the heat. "Kettles get super hot! It's not like pouring water from a pitcher, silly." Teasing him with a smile, far more genuine than the one she pulls off on stage. "Unless...you wanted hot water?"
Panic sets in after the toddler is startled enough by the loud tone to duck down on the countertop. Aqua immediately understands that he hasn't broken anything, that everything seems to be working fine but... Then some shifting sounds come from the direction of the bedroom and footsteps soon after.
"Ai's coming!--"
Aqua scrambles back to his feet, and looks over the kettle again. Once he's confirmed that its definitely set to boil, he looks over to the floor, trying to contemplate just how quickly he can get down, but--
"Aqua, what are you doing?"
He finds himself scooped up in Ai's arms and set back on the ground in short order. Aqua kept his gaze fixed on his mother while she continued speaking, only letting himself look just a little crestfallen that he was stopped.
"Kettles get super hot! It's not like pouring water from a pitcher, silly." Teasing him with a smile, far more genuine than the one she pulls off on stage. "Unless...you wanted hot water?"
While most children of his age might have started bawling the moment Ai had caught what he was doing or, if nothing else, pouted at her attempt to stop him, Aqua simply let his eyes drift between his mother and the kettle, hinting at his disappointment, yet giving her adequate attention to lecture him before speaking.
"...Can I have some tea?"
He asks in a calm and innocent tone, hoping a metered response would give enough misdirection for Ai to completely forget that he could have easily hurt himself if he fell off the counter.
Go for it, Kana!!!
Day with no stress, he said. Well, Ruby was about to change his plans… just slightly, nothing too big, nothing to be worried about, just a tiny, mini, insignificant change.
"Well, actually, I was planning to take it easy today" Ruby sat in one of the chairs looking at her brother, she rested her elbows on the table and clasped her hands as she looked at him with a smile "No B-Komachi activities today, no videos to record, or concerts to go, or practices today…"
She made a pause, thinking, the plan was already forming in her mind. Aqua said he would hear out any plans she might have, but knowing him he would probably refuse, she was going to have to convince him one way or another.
How could she bribe him if he refused?
"And yup, I did not sleep well, I was worried. But with you here, there is nothing to be worried about anymore!" There was no point in speaking in circles anymore, so she decided to get to the point "See! They are going to open today a new zip line and Miyako said she was going to take me there but she had that last-minute meeting! So I was going to go alone but you know I am terrible with directions and I might get lost plus it's funnier to do it with someone but Kana and Mem are very busy today so I was thinking you could take me there and we could do the zip line together!!"
She inhaled a great breath of air when she finished speaking, sometimes she didn't know how she was able to talk so much without stopping to breathe.
A zip line…
Color seeped from her brother’s face as Ruby’s breathless explanation went on; his mouth slowly opened, turning his expression to one of uncharacteristically serious anxiety.
Memories from Aqua’s past life welled up to the front of his mind. Gorou, having been from a mountainous and touristy place was quite familiar with zip lines! And yet, he was more familiar with being pushed down one, mentally unprepared, and crying his lungs out the whole way down. And further yet, he was even more familiar with the “interesting” bone breaks and dislocations that would wander into the hospital’s emergency department courtesy of that same zip line.
All these unpleasant memories reflexively triggered Aqua’s arm to grasp stiffly at the coffee mug he had pushed away just a moment ago. With a mechanical cadence, he took hold of the handle and shoved the cup into his face. The aspiring actor chugged the remaining contents, desperate for any courage an elevated heart rate might grant him.
If I don't go with her, she's just going to go by herself and probably wind up in some kind of serious trouble, knowing Ruby...
Practically dropping the cup back to the table, he mustered his best attempt to feign a smile, still looking far more nervous that he probably ought to.
"Why... I'd be happy to go, Ruby! That sounds like a great way to spend today!"
Aqua's tone was so forced it would probably harm most anyone's confidence in his ability to be an actor. Seems the things that are able to unnerve him tend to be quite unexpected.
I finally caught up on the manga! Now I can get on to doing more threads and having a generally better idea for how I should portray Aqua and Gorou... and its nice to have most of my headcanons about them confirmed.
That said, there's some serious topics in the last 10-ish chapters. I kind of expected them to keep dancing around the more dangerous subjects like they'd done in previous arcs, but they went for it pretty much as far as they could while being respectful.
As for that one chapter (143) that stirred up controversy a few weeks ago... I think not a lot of people are thinking about it actually in the context of what's going on. Both Aqua's actions and the subject matter that gets discussed right before the kissing scene gets brought up really suggest that he's not at all comfortable with what's happening and he's not supposed to be. I'll have to keep waiting for new chapters and see the direction things wind up going in.
Soooo, now is probably a good time to come clean and admit that I hadn't read the manga before, only watched season 1 of the Oshi no Ko anime.
And after four days of slamming through the series on Manga Plus and reaching chapter 100, I'm just over 2/3rds of the way to being caught up. Its been an absolute ride. If there's any one out there that's a fan of the anime and hasn't read the manga yet. Please. Do it.
Anyway, I have a billion ideas for Aqua (despite me wanting to throttle him for some of the things he's done) and a million AU ideas. Expect some blog updates and drabbles to come~

Aqua's eyelids fluttered, opening his eyes to the afternoon sun peering through the blinds of the living room. After a moment of sleepy contemplation, he pulled himself to his feet, grabbing the cushion of the couch with one tiny hand and rubbing both of his eyes with the other. With no good way of knowing the time other than the Sun, his eyes scan across the room to try and make sense of when it might be.
"Did Miyako leave already?..." Aqua thought in his mind, as he spotted no one else in the living room, aside from Ruby who was still fast asleep on the floor. "That must mean its after 3:30. Probably. And that must mean that Ai went to go take a nap of her own in bed... Probably."
The toddler let out a sigh, resting with his face set in a dissatisfied expression, frustrated at his inability to properly orient himself. "Maybe... I should really convince someone to get me a cheap watch."
Aqua resigned himself to walk over to the kitchen and look around for something to take care of how thirsty he was beginning to feel. In fact, for the first time since his rebirth as Ai's son, he wanted a cup of tea more than anything. He looked up at the counter beside the sink, spotting an electric kettle and a few clean teacups left on a rack to dry after being washed. Deciding to be adventurous for once and convinced he was good enough at climbing after spending a few weeks with Ruby at the playground, he grabs ahold of the shelves under the counter and slowly climbs up...
...and he actually manages to reach the top without incident. Aqua smiles at his returning dexterity and good fortunes while he eyes the electric kettle. Noticing there's still some water left in it, he hesitates no further to press a few buttons to get it boiling!
But his efforts are instead rewarded by a loud enough beep to wake up absolutely everyone in the apartment and send them looking for the annoyance.

If I'm actually going to call myself 'back', I need to reply to any replies that got left hanging last year. Most people RPing Oshi No Ko have gone inactive though, so here's what I'm going to do.
