Back at it again — this time my MH faves with what I think would be their favorite Duffy and Friends characters 💖
My MH faves and the Chiikawa character(s) I think each would like or relate to the most 💖
It seems like we're at the point where we can mention things about G3 that didn't land for us without people assuming I hate g3 in general, so can I just say I cannot stand the writing for Bloodgood in like the entire 1st season and movie?
I was so excited to see her return and I was so excited when her design and actresses were revealed! I think both Marci and Debra are fantastic Bloodgoods, they have the perfect vibe and did wonderfully with what they were given.
It's the writers that for some reason decided that having her go on about how some students would never belong at the school was a good idea!!! Like wth??
I know some people are probably going to tell me "well, it's a reboot, some stuff will change" - which is true, however that doesn't mean that all of the changes are well executed in my opinion. Additionally, pretty much every other character who had their personality changed was made to be a better individual. Nefera and Manny are nice now, Toralei got a full redemption. Bloodgood is, from my memory, the only one that they completely changed the personality of and in doing so made her a jerk!
And it wasn't an accident either, they knew exactly what they were doing when they were giving her the lines that they gave her. They purposefully characterized her as unwelcoming and extremely prejudiced.
I'm not a fan of the school as a whole being exclusionary now either, but if you really felt the need to do that could you at least have had her be someone who was fighting to change that? That would be an interesting conflict!
Anyway. I was going to put a clip of one of the lines from the show that I'm talking about but I can't find the clip on YouTube. I'll include an example from the movie though.
That's all I've got. Regardless I still love G3 Bloodgood, I really hope they make a doll of her at some point. I just think that both the character and the actresses playing her deserved better.
I want to say that I’m also not a fan of how g3 has handled Bloodgood’s character.
To add on — g3 Bloodgood’s backstory and reasoning for being headmistress falls flat for me. In the Monster Ball webisodes, she says that she defeated the Formal Phantom when they cursed her high school dance, which made her decide that she wanted to be “the school’s protector”, and so eventually became headmistress. The story itself is fine, but there technically is no motive to her decision. Why does she want to protect the school from threats like the Formal Phantom? What does she protect (people, ideas, or values) by protecting the school? What’s at stake if she doesn’t? If she wants to protect her school, why does she have prejudices against some of the students she’s protecting?
Versus g1 Bloodgood started Monster High/became headmistress because she wanted a place where everyone, monster or human, could belong. She faced a lot of adversity when founding the school, and it’s implied she even faced the “monster equivalent” of discrimination (being perceived as absent-minded and clueless by others - She’s a headless monster.) Yet despite the ostracism she faced, she did it anyway, because she believed it would work, and it did! To add to the stakes, MH is the only school of its kind in the g1 universe, and not all monsters believe it will last long. If MH were to ever fail, that’s one less space where everyone can be included. That’s why g1 Bloodgood always focused on balancing her students needs and always advocated that students do their best academically, because it not only ensured that the school performs well, but the school’s success ensures that this safe space/environment will stay open for her students - who she believes deserve a place where they can be themselves.
I think I read somewhere that the writers’ reasoning for the changes made in g3 were to make the show a form of escapism. Yet, they made the main setting of the narrative to be such an exclusionary and tense place. And because the g3 school is exclusionary, then the person leading it, the headmistress, would uphold/reflect those rules too (unless they decided to challenge the status quo). G1’s school advocated for inclusion, so their headmistress reflected those values.
Another odd decision to me was just how strict and obsessive with detention/expulsion g3 Bloodgood is. So many times when trouble brews she warns students with detention, and once even made a joking remark along the lines of that she’ll expel the perpetrator, then re-enroll them to expel them again. G1 Bloodgood also handed out a few detentions, but it was not done so gratuitously. The only times I can think of her actually giving out detention was in Ghoul’s Rule, the webisode with Johnny Spirit, and maybe the webisode where Abbey and Frankie meet. Even in Ghoul’s Rule, she only did it because the ghouls would not stop going out to the normie town and risking increasing the tensions between the monster and human sides of town. She only did it because she wants them to be safe and not put the rest of the school in danger. And with Abbey and Frankie, they never ended up in the study howl of eternal homework anyway, and the time they spent together wearing the magical bracelets helped them initiate their friendship.
G1 Bloodgood’s character not only acted as an authority/mentor figure for the students to look up to, but she was also their greatest supporter. G1’s character also served to challenge and break the strict teacher/principal stereotype — from the outside she appears cold, but once the students get to know her they realize how caring and thoughtful she is. She does her best to make sure each student is accommodated for, and does all she can to build a sense of community by encouraging her students to embrace their individuality and differences, but also recognizing their commonalities. The students even call her the “best headmistress ever!” Instead of continuing and building this idea, g3 just reduces Bloodgood’s character down to strict school principal who gives a lot of detention.
Bloodgood is not the only one of my favorite characters from g1 that I think g3 did not do the best at adapting, or at least did not adapt my favorite aspects of their characters into their new versions (the others including Cleo, Nefera, Skelita, Mouscedes, and Robecca). I mostly enjoy g3, but how they handled my favorite characters (along with another handful of critiques I have) has hindered me from enjoying g3 to the fullest. And it doesn’t help there isn’t much media to develop them with. The main reason I’m attached to these new versions is because I’m attached to the original characters.
To end more positively, I do like the dolls, and I do hope we get a g3 Bloodgood soon. And I hope like some of the other characters, we get a bit of a design change between the show and her doll. I actually like better the outfit they gave her for the Monster Ball than her core design, so maybe they’ll do something similar?
Okay, so I know that Astranova’s character is a play on the urban myth about alien contact with ancient civilizations, and I know about the EAH/wishing star theory…
But does anyone else think that Astranova might also be a reference to Close Encounters of the Third Kind?
For context, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) is a Steven Spielberg movie where an ordinary man has an encounter with a UFO and over time becomes obsessed with the image of a mysterious mountain (the mountain the aliens land on at the climax of the movie).
In the movie, scientists communicate with the aliens using a five-note tonal phrase. In Boo York, Ghoulia also uses a set of notes to communicate with Astranova’s ship.
In CE3K, music is the only way humans are able to communicate with the aliens. In her diary, Astranova starts off not understanding any Earth language, but connects with them through music.
In the climax of CE3K, the cast groups with the scientists to talk to the aliens using a giant musical keyboard. In Boo York, the school also watches Ghoulia make contact with Astranova using her own keyboard.
And the alien’s mothership lights up to the music, kinda like how Astranova’s comet does in the movie and playset! Both even have similar silhouettes.
Also off topic - this is just something funny I noticed - but Astranova trying to contact her home with music notes kinda reminds me of “ET phone home” lol
This is probably all a huge coincidence, especially since a lot of alien movies follow similar themes/tropes. But, MH also does love their pop culture references.
I’ve never seen anyone talk about this before, which is why I’m bringing it up here lol
So what do you all think?
Last summer I drew this Hexiciah Steam / Indiana Jones crossover poster and posted it here, but since then I have fixed a few details. Here’s the updated version of the illustration! 🎩🧭⚙️
Some old sketches 💖
First is a tiny BloodHex doodle. I drew this about a year ago, but I didn’t decide to color it until recently lol 💜💙
And a design for Bloodgood as a magical girl in a Sailor Moon inspired au. I kinda like how she turned out, but I’ll definitely touch up her look in the future, as well as make magical girl designs for my other fave ghouls. 🌙✨
I’ve seen a few people online creating their own Monster High versions of the Iron Lung monster, so I thought I’d try designing my own! 🌙🩸🦈
Meet Sanguine Marin - daughter of the Blood Eel! Photography is her favorite extra-scare-icular activity, and she dreams of being a radiologist. Her go-to meals are microwaveable dinners. Her freaky flaw? - even though she is usually quiet and keeps to herself, she tends to bite things when something doesn’t go her way!
I also designed what I think her doll sculpt could look like:
And thank you to @scarilyeverrose for helping me come up with her name! 💖
One of my favorite details in MH and EAH - the same Jurassic Park reference being made multiple times lol
Also this cool dinosaur that appears at the end of Freaky Fusion
I would have loved a dinosaur/JP themed special or doll line in MH!
Maybe someday I’ll try creating my own designs for one 🦖💀🎀
My fave panels from this animatic 💖
Something silly I made while messing around in storyboard pro
Storyboards of Hexiciah and Bloodgood’s conversation that I made for a class assignment! 💙✨💜
When you’re in the middle of teaching a class, but your student has a dangerous inner personality that recklessly disregards the spectacular mysteries of life, in pursuit of his scientific ambitions.
Also as much as i think G3 Robecca body mold is the sole redeeming thing in her design, I find it kind of sad people are bashing the G1 body because of it.
Like this is definately a "agree to disagree" thing (especially since, again, g3's body is incredibly well designed), but the 'frankenstiened' patchwork body made so much sense to me cause Hexicah was supposed to come of as a (good) mad scientist who was making the world's first robot, and hence didn't know how to go about it. It also functioned as a cool contrast to Elle Eedee, who, as a contemporary robot model, was much sleeker, futuristic, and symmetrical.
Reeeeeal! And both were made with LOVE!!!!!! 💖 BECAUSE THEY ARE SO FAMILY!!
Yes, my thoughts exactly! G3 Robecca’s body sculpt is amazing, but I believe g1’s sculpt is just as brilliant. I love the asymmetry in g1 Robecca’s sculpt, and I think it totally fits with MH’s philosophy of “perfectly imperfect.”
I feel this also aligns with the way I feel about g3 Skelita. I think she’s absolutely beautiful, but it saddens me that some people are using their preference for her design to bash her g1 design (a select few going as far to call her “ugly”).
I think g1 and g3 Skelita are equally wonderful in their own ways: g1 is simple but bold, and g3 is bright and frilly. Both are equally colorful and beautifully express Mexican fashion and culture. Much of g3 Skelita’s design is taken from g1’s design, so I don’t understand why some people are praising one, yet directly criticizing the other.
Especially since throughout history Mexicanas and Mexican-American women have been shamed for their looks and fashion sense, especially when it does not fit “the norm,” (think the Pachucas, Chicanas, Cholas, etc.) - seeing people praise g3 then immediately put down g1 just because g3 has more colorful makeup and “princess-y” style (in contrast to g1’s design) makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. G1 Skelita’s primary designer was Natalie Villegas, who explicitly stated that much of her design inspiration came from her Chicana roots and experiences reconnecting to Mexican culture. Which is perhaps why much of g1 Skelita’s fashion mixed aspects of Mexican culture with bold and more alternative styles. I know this is not people’s intent, but knowing this and seeing g1 Skelita receive this kind of treatment from fans makes me hurt a little.
G1 and G3 Skelita are beautiful interpretations of the same character, her style and design influenced by both the era during which she is created, and by the experiences of the people who design her. Of course, anything can (and should) receive helpful critique, but there is no need to put down one design just because another is preferred. Just like the figure of La Catrina (which heavily inspired her character), Skelita is all about embracing your heritage and cultural roots, and never compromising any part of yourself just to fit in with everyone else. No matter how one chooses to express that part of themself, it should be done with love.
G1 Skelita was one of the first times I truly saw myself in a fictional character, and I’m sure g3 Skelita is doing the same for many others today. Skelita siempre fue y sigue siendo hermosa 💖

Star Wars is technically a fairy tale 🪐⭐️✨
Day 1 of BloodHex-tober: Beginnings
This was supposed to be a simple sketch, but I got carried away lmaooo. Hence why it’s a little late.
Anyways, a little backstory for this is based off an old headcanon of mine, where Bloodgood and Hexiciah meet at some sort of banquet/ball held by Dracula in hopes of helping promote Monster High as it’s in the making. They both grow found of each other, holding intellectual and infatuating conversations (and becoming a bit smitten) with each other. They especially about their love for their careers, future endeavors, and Hexiciah taking a great interest in wanting to teach at and help build Monster High.
A special thank you to my dear bestie @someghoulnamedponi for making the BloodHex-tober prompt! I had a lot of fun making this and I can’t wait to draw more of the themes! 💜
