Stephanie Castillo (or Steph as sheâs known to pretty much everybody) regards her life as nothing particularly extraordinary. She grew up in Astoria with her mother, father and two younger siblings. A natural leader who loved the spotlight, her mother used to joke that sheâd never get a doctor out of her eldest daughter. Indeed, Stephanie followed in her fatherâs footsteps, showing an aptitude for dance and was keen to follow him career wise as a latin and ballroom dancer. She had her entire life mapped out by thirteen as a matter of fact, that she was definitely going to the Worlds and she was going to win.
Unfortunately Stephanieâs long time dance partner came down with a severe ankle injury before they were headed out to the national junior championships. Refusing to dance without her best friend, Steph took the time to re-evaluate where she was going and what she wanted. Eventually she came to the conclusion that she just couldnât dance in that way without her partner anymore, it just didnât feel right. So she hung up her professional dancing shoes and went off in search of a new passion to keep herself going on.
Naturally artsy and outgoing, it was only a matter of time before Stephanie found the theater or rather it found her and something clicked. That it seemed was that and Steph threw herself, as she did with most things, head first into it. Her drama teacher was enthusiastic about her abilities, which mainly were attributed to her natural confidence rather than anything else. It seemed as though Stephanie was certainly a case of âfake it until you make itâ. Her parents were supportive of her newfound career path and knowing that she wouldnât settle until she found herself on stage, Steph set her sights on the Great White Way.
After graduating from NYUâs theater program, Stephanie joined the ensemble of a touring production of Fiddler on the Roof. With an easy smile, she dug her heels in and built her way up to understudy roles. Eventually she found herself making her Broadway debut understudying Elphaba in Wicked. After a year of solid work with the production, they offered her a yearâs contract to play the lead fulltime and Stephanie was delighted. It was what sheâd dreamed! Her big break! But still while she enjoyed the show, something felt off about it and she was glad to leave when her time was up. Searching for something new and exciting that connected her with her roots, Steph fell in with the production of On Your Feet. Feeling free and as though sheâd finally found her place, she auditioned and found herself following the show to Broadway as Gloria Estefan where sheâs remained ever since. If you ask her, yes she definitely couldnât be happier about where she is right now!
