Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins (Hex Hall #3)
Sophie finally was able to connect with her father and came to terms with her demon powers and heritage, when the council takes it all away. After narrowly avoiding the Removal, Sophie makes another shocking discovery about herself and the war that is about to begin, in earnest.
With her powers trapped and a magical mirror telling her that she’s the answer to stopping the war, Sophie is on the edge of freaking out. With her friends and loved ones there helping her along, she just might make it through in one piece.
This is the third book in the Hex Hall trilogy by Rachel Hawkins. As far as the writing goes, as with the other books, the wording is well thought out and easily ingested. The tone that remains throughout is exactly the kind of tone I remember from high school, minus the magical creatures.
As for the plot, I envisioned so much more, and at the same time, so much less. As far as the action and the war that the book promises, there really wasn’t much at all. The action was more spying and planning and smooching, which is fine, I guess, but I was expecting more, good versus evil throwing spells and what not. I was really so much more. The war, if you can call it that, barely began before it was over and, in the long run, Sophie didn’t seem to be as needed and as important as the book makes you think, but that could just be me.
As for the love triangle we are presented with in book two, I wasn’t at all prepared for the drama and the direction this book went. With most teenage love triangles I have read, especially those involving female heroines, there is usually an “event” that occurs so that the heroine no longer has to choose between the two love interests. I was prepared for such event, as long as it followed the unspoken rules. I was not ready when the author broke those rules.
I would love to see the author write a book that gives a look at where these characters are after they complete their schooling and find their places in the real world.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first two books.
