The Lexeon Titan alarm clock and AM/FM radio finds beauty in simplicity. The dimmable LED display for the time and the frequency sits behind the speaker grille. Available in different colors and materials.
Modern Retro -
I've been loving the modern-retro designs this past year. These are from Atomic Living Design . I love the clean edges, stark whites and bright colors mixed with the natural wood colors. Search hard enough and you can find quite a few furniture designers doing similar things nowadays.
Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.
4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
10 minutes:
A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.
45 minutes:
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.
The questions raised:
*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
*Do we stop to appreciate it?
*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…
How many other things are we missing?

Caught in Time -
Very intriguing design. Just a cool timepiece making use of an everyday object... or an allusion to a much more risque fetish; I'm not quite sure, but either way, it has a very cool effect.

The Weight He Bears -
Proposed architecture by superunion architects. It gives the appearance of a large building resting upon the shoulders of a golden Atlas. I liked how they used mirrored supports on the other end of the structure so as to give the impression that he holds up the entire building.
While tablets are all the rage for reading books these days, there’s still something nice about having actual books on your shelf. Art Ori’s clever bookends turn your books into a tiny action scene.
Shocked Tables -
Some very cool carved, contorted tables. Done by artist Suzy Lelievre.
the Angel of History -
"His face is turned towards the past," Benjamin Walter remarks. "Where we see the appearance of a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe, which unceasingly piles rubble on top of rubble and hurls it before his feet.... He would like to pause for a moment... to awaken the dead and piece together what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise, it has caught itself upon his wings and is so strong that the Angel can no longer close them. The storm drives him irresistibly into the future, to which his back is turned while the rubble-heap before him grows sky-high. That which we call progress, is this storm." qoute from Illuminations by Walter Benjamin

Very cool and simple idea to light up a hallway with some beautiful color. Turns the space itself into art. Click through to check out more images and info from Designboom.
Vintage Camera Nightlights by Jason Hull
Jason has been converting old cameras from the 50’s and 60’s into workable nightlights, making your room looks like it’s stuck in the perpetual flash of a photography relic. Dont worry though photophiles! Jason doesnt use cameras that are rare or in pristine condition, just junky plastic ones that are easily procured from local flea markets or garage sales. Check out the entire set at his flickr.

Threadless has a bunch of great Muppet tees right now. And I really enjoyed this lil design.

watch by Arnaud Tellier. I've been loving the exposed gear style watches lately. And the rolling barrels add a whole other reason for fixation.
