Clint watches as Tony leans back into the sofa, smiling as the model slides into his lap.
He looks towards the entrance of the club, taking a sip of his drink. The others should be arriving soon so that they can begin their night of club hopping... and Tony'll find out that he's lost the bet.
Tony either underestimated Janet's persistence or Steve's willingness to adapt to the modern world... or both.
Soon, T'Challa, Janet, Thor, and Steve arrive and are making their way over.
Tony quickly twists around when he catches Clint's expression, trying to spot the rest of the team around his model.
"Pay up," he laughs. "Janet, Tchalla, and I will take payment in-"
"There's no way this is real..." Tony says.
Steve comes upstairs right after the others. He's wearing tight black leather pants and a black leather jacket over a glittery silver sheer shirt.
"Looking good, Cap!" Clint calls.
"Thanks," the man says. He takes a drink from the table and heads back down the stairs.
"Wait!" Tony calls, "Where're you going?"
Steve tosses a smile over his shoulder at Tony, "I'm going to find someone to teach me how to dance at a club."
For 'Steve and music', I want to highlight his love of musical theater!
This first musical theatre reference isn't a direct reference. In February 1941, Steve went undercover as a woman. During that mission, he was singing and kitting while on the plane. While the phrase 'tra-la-la' has been around for a while, this is probably a reference to the song 'Tra-la-la-la' sung by Shirley Temple in the 1940 musical Young People.
In Captain America #251:
Steve's new neighbor Bernie looks through his record collection, and he tells her that he has "some Broadway show tunes" as well as early 20th century jazz.
Captain America #253:
Steve and Bernie go to see Rodgers & Hammerstein's first ever musical, Oklahoma! We learn that Steve saw the original production in 1943, even though he was already serving as Captain America!
Captain America #284:
Steve and Bernie gush about their love for the 1942 biographical musical film Yankee Doodle Dandy, which is about Broadway legend George M. Cohen's life.
Cohen is an instrumental part of Broadway and musical theatre history. From Wikipedia:
Cohan began his career as a child, performing with his parents and sister in aΒ vaudevilleΒ act known as "The Four Cohans". Beginning withΒ Little Johnny JonesΒ in 1904, he wrote, composed, produced, and appeared in more than three dozen Broadway musicals. Cohan wrote more than 50 shows and published more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including the standards "Over There", "Give My Regards to Broadway", "The Yankee Doodle Boy" and "You're a Grand Old Flag". As a composer, he was one of the early members of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). He displayed remarkable theatrical longevity, appearing in films until the 1930s and continuing to perform as a headline artist until 1940.
Known in the decade before World War I as "the man who owned Broadway", he is considered the father of American musical comedy.[2]Β His life and music were depicted in theΒ Oscar-winning filmΒ Yankee Doodle DandyΒ (1942) and the 1968 musicalΒ George M!. AΒ statue of CohanΒ inΒ Times Square, New York City, commemorates his contributions to American musical theatre.[3]
He and Steve also have extremely similar backgrounds!
Cohan was born in 1878 inΒ Providence, Rhode Island, to Irish Catholic parents. A baptismal certificate fromΒ St. Joseph's Roman Catholic ChurchΒ (which gave the wrong first name for his mother) indicated that Cohan was born on July 3, but he and his family always insisted that he had been "born on the Fourth of July!"[1][4]
Second generation Irish Catholic immigrant AND born on the 4th of July? Steve and George Cohen are a match made in heaven!
a late fill for @stevesbirthdaycalendar day 27, "team" π happy birthday to my fave supersoldier π
For Steve's birthday, he receives an array of presents.
Natasha buys him a gorgeous set of art supplies. Steve spends a long time admiring the colours and feeling the thick, high-quality paper. He's excited to try the watercolours. They're not his usual medium.
From Thor he gets a beautiful hand-woven blanket from Asgard. βYou do not like the cold,β Thor says. βAnd I thought you would appreciate the artistry.β
Steve is very touched.
Clint buys him a pair of, in his words, βcool sneakersβ. Steve tries them on, and the team all oohs and ahhs appreciatively. Theyβre navy and white, and according to Clint they're good for running. Steve feels touched by that, too.
From Bruce he gets an old cookbook. βFrom the 40s,β Bruce says. βSome of them are a little after your time, butβ¦β
βI love it,β Steve says. Already he's thinking of the meals he would've eaten before the war, and the recipes he would have missed after that he's like to try. He flicks through the pages and finds a recipe for soda bread, like the kind his ma used to make. He hasn't eaten that in years. βThank you.β
From Tony he gets a new pair of headphones. Steve turns them over, puzzled β he doesn't listen to music all that much β until Tony says, βThey have enhanced noise-cancelling. I know the serum made your ears more sensitive. And, you know, you can use them for the fireworks.β
Steve is stunned. All the gifts he's got are so thoughtful, so specific to him. He's never been very materialistic, but looking down at the presents on his lap he feels they're evidence of the wonderful, unexpected friendships he's made in this new century.
βThank you,β he says, looking up at them. He feels a wave of fondness seeing his teammates and the big cake on the table and the blue βITβS A BOY!β banner strung up on the walls (Clint had meant to buy the βBirthday Boyβ one, but there'd been a mix-up with his order). βYou're theβ¦ I haven't hadβ¦ Thank you. Really.β
He can't find the words he really wants to express how he feels, but from the looks on their faces he doesn't need to. They understand. He gets pulled into a hug with lots of slaps on the back and Tony complaining that Nat's hair is in his mouth and a tight squeeze from Thor that nearly takes the breath out of his lungs, and Steve's happy. After so long searching for a home, it feels like he's finally found it.
...and that's July! Thank you so much to everyone who participated in Steve's Birthday Calendar for making Steve's birthday month so, so, so fun and special. π₯°β€οΈ

Bucky and his boyfriend have been dating for six months, and so far it's going really well.
Steve is sweet and gentlemanly and a little awkward in a way that Bucky finds endlessly endearing. He snorts when he laughs too hard. He gives the best hugs in the whole world. He brings Bucky flowers for every date, whether they've planned a romantic dinner or a night in watching The Lord of the Rings. (Steve had never watched it before. Bucky considered it his civic duty to introduce it to him.)
Steve also happens to be Captain America, but in Bucky's opinion that's not the most interesting thing about him. It is, however, very relevant to their scheduling. Especially on afternoons like these, where Steve is due back from a two-week-long mission. Bucky's missed him.
He gets a text from Steve while he's at work.
Steve π: Can I stay over at yours tonight?
Bucky smiles, feeling inwardly very pleased. In past relationships he always felt like too much, too clingy. He loves that Steve is always just as eager to see Bucky as Bucky is to see him.
Absolutely!! :) Bucky texts back. Takeout? I can grab it omw home.
Then he sends: Omw means on my way.
βOn your phone at work,β Kate mock-sighs from above him. βShameless.β
Bucky looks up at her and grins. He works as a receptionist. His colleagues that work in the offices usually just say hi in the morning.and drift off. Kate is one of his favourite co-workers because she spends her lunch breaks gossiping with him. βCaught me,β he says.
βTexting the boyfriend?β
βMaaaybe,β Bucky says, sliding his phone back into his pocket. βWhy? You want him to ask Hawkeye to sign your bow?β
βI told you that in secrecy,β Kate hisses. Then: βActually, that's not a bad idea. But it has to be my toy bow from when I was a kid. Super cute. Pink and purple.β
βWhy? I thought you had a real bow.β
βI do, but the toy bow is from when I was a kid. When youβre a kid itβs cute. Itβs weirder to ask your hero to sign something when you're a grown adult.β
βI think Hawkeye would find it adorable,β Bucky says.
βHa ha.β
Buckyβs phone vibrates again and he pulls it out, then frowns at Steve's text.
Steve π: I might be a little late. Fury's scheduled a meeting for when we land.
"What's up?β Kate asks.
βNothing,β Bucky says. Steve's just been so busy recently. Bucky has been keeping him updated with a stream of selfies and pictures of sunsets he sees on his walk home, as well as texts complaining about work and how he accidentally burned himself while cooking. Steve had sent back a worried text telling Bucky to rinse his hand under cool, not cold, water for at least 20 minutes, but other than that he's been very quiet. Bucky hopes he's alright.
βWhat are your plans tonight, Kate?β
βGoing to my momβs for dinner,β Kate says. βIβm helping her Marie-Kondo her apartment this weekend. Not as exciting as hanging out with Captain America.β
βI don't know,β Bucky says, thinking back to Steve's text about the burn care. βI don't think they're that different.β
βI bet your boyfriend doesnβt have a passionate love for meatloaf,β Kate says.
βSteve grew up in the 1920s,β Bucky tells her. βHe loves meatloaf.β
βNooo,β Kate says. βLet me maintain my perception of Captain America as cool and sexy and anti-meatloaf.β
βStop calling my boyfriend cool and sexy, Bishop,β Bucky says, but he's grinning.
β
Bucky yawns as he gets in through the door and hangs his coat up. He kicks off his shoes and heads to the shower β Subway sweat is a different kind of gross β before changing into his pyjamas. He's towelling his hair when he gets another text from Steve.
Steve π: Might be another hour or so until I'm finished. I'm sorry.
Bucky texts back immediately, Don't worry! Text me when you're on your way :)
It's another two hours before Steve texts back. Buckyβs reading on the couch; he fishes his phone out from between the couch cushions when he hears it vibrate.
Steve π: Iβm so sorry, Buck. We had to fill out a few injury forms so it went on a little longer. Is it still alright for me to come over?
Steve π: Have you eaten?
Steve π: I'll grab takeout if you're still hungry. I'm sorry again for keeping you waiting.
Bucky doesn't care about any of that. He sits up on the couch and texts: Injury forms??
Steve π: Yes, but I'm fine, don't worry. Thai?
Bucky exhales heavily. Yes, but you BETTER be fine, he texts. He attaches a mix of angry faces and heart emojis and sets his phone down. It lights up a few seconds later.
Steve π: β₯οΈ
Bucky smiles before getting up and tidying his apartment a little for Steve coming. Not that he really needs to impress him. Steve comes over all the time. He says he prefers Bucky's pokey little apartment to the Tower. Bucky had been incredulous at first; he may live alone, which in New York City is an unspeakable luxury, but he still lives inβ¦ well, New York City. His apartment is tiny, often cold, and nowhere near as luxurious as Avengers Tower. It's not like Buckyβs place comes with a built-in AI.
But Steve had taken his hands and said, βI love it. It's you.β Bucky had looked around at the walls, covered in framed posters of his favourite movies, and the counter, which hosted a stack of recipe books and a cheerful red toaster his mom had bought him, and at all the little knick-knacks strewn about. The blanket thrown over the couch that he and Steve snuggled under on movie nights; the polaroids and smiley-face magnets on his fridge, his βYear in Catsβ calendar hanging by the door. He thought back to Steve's sterile bedroom in Avengers Tower, void of decorations save for the cheesy NYC snowglobe Buckyβd bought him, and understood.
Bucky liked the idea of moving in with Steve eventually. He dreamed of somewhere that wasn't just his but theirs, somewhere where Steveβs art was hung up on the wall and where his Old Spice cluttered up the kitchen sink. (Not that Steveβs things would be able to really cause clutter. Steve had precisely one of everything he owned, except for tiny Under Armour t-shirts, of which he seemed to have a thousand.)
Bucky hadn't brought it up yet though. It was still early days.
A knock on the door announces Steve's arrival ten minutes later. Bucky rushes to it and flings it open. βHey!β he says, before he inhales sharply, shocked. Steveβs standing in his doorway with a busted lip, a bruised cheekbone β and a bunch of flowers tucked under his arm.
βHi.β
βDonβt βhiβ me. You said you didnβt get hurt!β Bucky fusses. βYour face, Steve.β
βItβs mostly healed, I swear. It just looks worse than it is.β
βThat's what Iβm worried about.β It still looks pretty gnarly. If this is what it looks like after a few hours of supersoldier healing, what did it look like before? Steve almost never admits when heβs hurting. Bucky doesn't know if it's a result of growing up with a semi-constant pain as his regular, or if it's part of Steve's general βyou donβt need to worry about me, Buckβ brand of minimising.
βI mean it this time,β Steve says. βI promise.β
Steve never, ever breaks his promises. βOkay,β Bucky says.
Steve's looking at him with soft eyes. βGod, I missed you,β he murmurs, before he pulls Bucky into a kiss.
Bucky had missed this, too. He tiptoes up to wind his arms around Steve's neck β the height difference still makes him swoon β and breathes in the warm scent of Steve's cologne. Steve kisses like he does everything else: earnestly and honestly, and Bucky melts into it, reaching around to cup the back of Steve's neck. He's always tense here. As Bucky massages it Steve's shoulders droop, like all the stress and distance of the past two weeks has melted away with Bucky's touch.
They pull away and Bucky takes the flowers Steveβs holding out. βThese are beautiful, thank you,β he says. βYou really didnβt have to get me them, though."
βI wanted to,β Steve says. βThe florist I usually go to was closed, so, uh, theyβre just from the bodega ββ
βYou have a usual florist?β Bucky asks, melting. Sometimes he thinks Steve wandered right off the pages of a romance novel and into Bucky's life. How is he real?
βI do,β Steve says, smiling.
βCome here,β Bucky says, because he has to kiss him again. Heβd missed Steve: missed his gentle voice and strong, assured hands and his sweet, dopey face, which is looking at him veryβ¦ well, sweetly and dopily. βIβm glad you like them,β Steve says, voice a little husky.
Ughhh. How is this Buckyβs life?He ushers Steve further into his apartment, locking the door behind them. βHow was work?β
βOkay. We cracked a few HYDRA bases, so that was good.β
βYou look exhausted,β Bucky says worriedly. Itβs hard to tell what with the black eye, but he thinks he can see dark circles.
βIβm fine,β Steve says. βIβm just glad to see you.β (Buckyβs heart and brain squeal at the same time in response to this.) βIβm sorry I couldnβt call or text much. The signal was pretty awful.β
βIβm not surprised,β Bucky says. βWhere were you, uh, Siberia?β
Steve nods. βTurns out HYDRA bases arenβt the best spot for cell phone coverage,β he jokes.
βNo kidding.β
Bucky moves to fetch a vase for the flowers. His apartment has been strangely flower-less in Steveβs absence, and it takes him a second to locate which cupboard heβs stuffed it into. βWas the flight home okay?β
βIt was fine,β Steve says. βTony had Bruce to preoccupy himself with.β
Bucky laughs. βI'm sure Bruce loved that.β
βOh yeah. Two weeks without anything to tinker with drove Tony crazy.β Steve is unpacking the promised takeout on the counter. βHe was making up excuses to revamp my suit last time we talked.β
βOoh, tell him to text me. I've got ideas.β
Steve's cheeks flame red. Bucky knows he's thinking about the βsexy Captain Americaβ Halloween costumes Bucky had sent him pictures of a while back. βI'm gonna tell him to block your number.β
βCome on. The short shorts would look great on you.β
βYou're horrible,β Steve says, but he's smiling. He pushes Bucky's bowl towards him β he insists on using proper crockery for takeout, it's very sweet β and says, βShrimp pad thai for you.β
βYou are the best human being on earth,β Bucky tells him seriously. βI missed your photogenic memory of takeout menus.β
βOh, just that?β
βStop fishing for compliments, Rogers,β Bucky says, sidling up to him and kissing him again. βCβmon. Couch.β
They lose a little time kissing. Back in Steve's day, it was called necking. Bucky had found that pretty funny β Where'd that come from? heβd asked, and Steve had said, I donβt know. Where did making out come from? which stopped Bucky short because where did that come from? He'd had to Google it.
Out of all Steve's old-timey slang, though, that isn't his favourite. His favourite is what they called boyfriends back then. He'd asked Steve, and Steve had smiled a small shy smile and said, βWe used to say you were someone's best guy or best girl. We'd say her guy or his girl, too.β
βSo Iβd be your best guy?β Buckyβd asked.
Steveβs eyes had gone all soft and melty. βYeah.β He'd tucked a flyaway strand of hair behind Bucky's ear. βYou still are.β
So Bucky says it now; pulls Steve impossibly closer, hand in his hair, and murmurs, βMy best guy.β Steve smiles against him. His lips are a little chapped β heβs not had Bucky around to remind him to use his chapstick β and he kisses like he's trying to show Bucky just how much he missed him in one gesture. Bucky figures he's probably kissing Steve the same way. Two weeks was too long. Steve shouldn't spend that long without him again maybe ever.
They eventually pull apart. Bucky points to Steve's bowl. βEat,β he says, trying to sound stern even while his breathing is a little laboured. βI don't want to know what you guys eat on missions. Actually β what do you eat?β
βDepends on where it is,β Steve says, his noodles around his fork. βIf we're close to civilisation we usually find some hole in the wall place we won't get recognised in. Or order takeout. Tonyβs fond of pizza.β
βAnd when you're not?β
Steve grimaces. βHave you ever seen astronaut food?β
βUgh,β Bucky says with great effect. He pokes Steve with his foot. βEat up.β
He doesn't bother asking Steve if he wants a movie on. Steve prefers to sit and talk, which Bucky likes a lot. There's something very flattering about having all of Steve's attention on you; even more flattering that he's actually interested in Bucky's day and work and the dogs he saw on his walk home. (It was a golden retriever today. Steve is pleased to hear that. He's fond of them.)
Bucky doesn't feel awkward when they're not talking, either. In the past, with his exes, he always felt kind of weird eating in silence. Heβd worry he was boring, or that he was talking too much. With Steve the quiet is comfortable.
Bucky refills Steveβs bowl twice. He's about to do it a third time when Steve shakes his head and says, βI'm full, really, Buck. Just wanna sit with you. I missed holding you.β
Bucky feels something soft and vulnerable give way within him. βYeah?β he asks. It's funny, Steve isn't a very tactile person, but the longer they've been together the more that tactility comes out. Bucky suspects that Steve's been touch-starved for a long time. He can only imagine how lonely it must have been when Steve woke upβ¦ How much Steve must have missed the feeling of claps on the back and hugs andβ¦
Okay, it's fine, Bucky isn't going to get emotional. He returns to the couch and scoots under Steve's proffered arm, snuggling closer. βYeah,β Steve says. βIβm justβ¦ happy to be home.β
Steve is wearing a soft Henley. Bucky inhales and smells, with a weird little twist in his heart, his own laundry detergent.
Because Steve spends so much time here.
Because Bucky washes Steve's clothes with his, sometimes.
We smell the same, Bucky thinks to himself, dazed. And also: home. That's what Bucky wants his apartment to be for Steve. He knows the Tower doesn't feel much like a home to him, much as he loves his teammates and much as he's grateful to Tony Stark for hosting him. It's impossible, Bucky thinks, for a building so huge and high-tech to ever feel like Steve's.
βI'm happy you're home too,β he says.
Steve smiles. He starts to run his hand through Bucky's hair, and Bucky closes his eyes and feels himself drift.
βWe should go to bed,β Steve says.
Bucky throws his leg over Steve. Steve, in turn, cuddles Bucky closer, until they're a pile of tangled limbs and soft, comfy clothes. βWe will. Justβ¦ let's stay like this for a while first.β
βNo arguments here."
"And let's have a date night tomorrow,β Bucky says sleepily. βA proper one. We can, like, get fancy wine and go out to dinner.β
βWhatever you want,β Steve says. He leans down and kisses Bucky's head. βMissed you.β
βMissed you more and also most,β Bucky says. He reaches over and squeezes Steve's hand. βYou wanna have a lazy morning tomorrow? We can order in diner food.β
βThat sounds good.β
βYeah?β
βYeah.β Steve squeezes Bucky's hand back. βI think that sounds perfect.β
Steve's Birthday Calendar: fave Steve villain. I personally found the Red Skull and Ultron and Thanos lacking, so I'm going with a twist villain: the Winter Soldier. Even if we discount him being Bucky, he's such a perfect foil for Steve.
Steve questions authority and orders, Winter Soldier doesn't
Steve operates out in the open, WS works from the shadows
Steve is beloved and honored, WS is feared and mistreated
Steve is the summer soldier, not because he shies away from winter but because he does the sanctioned missions for SHIELD. WS does the secretive dirty work
Steve only uses his shield, a defensive weapon, and occasionally a gun, but he prefers close range combat. WS is an excellent marskman and will strike from afar
Steve has a lot of compassion and empathy, which has been burned out of WS, who is just brutal
They are equally strong and fast, their fights are evenly matched. And if we add Bucky back into the mix, we get childhood best friends turned enemies to best friends again, and I just go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There goes the last full week of July and Steve's Birthday Calendar! π₯Ή The upcoming week is small but mighty (like a certain pre-serum someone), with three fun prompts and one promising challenge. We can't wait to see your contributions in the #stevesbirthdaycalendar tag.
The teams are so important to Steve. Starting with Bucky and Peggy and the Howling Commandos, he works so well as part of a unit. And he's a great leader too.
Then the Avengers, which, admittedly, wasn't the most functional, but they still saved the world. And I love the extended Avengers and how supporting Steve was of Wanda especially. Gosh, they had so much potential.
And of course getting everyone together for a final stand. Who to lead them if not Steve?
for @stevesbirthdaycalendar, i've collected a bunch of art featuring steve in a shredded uniform to celebrate day 26/"favorite cap uniform" (since my favorite uniform of his is any that's been torn to shreds, naturally). these can all be found on my blog under the tag: "steve rogers: SHREDDED"
enjoy! (and if i missed any good ones please share them!)
The Nomad costume is near and dear to my heart, but the blue stealth suit takes it all. Love the silver design, love the brown leather accessorizing, love the veeery subtle dark dark red on the sides. Admittedly it doesn't hurt that it's in the best MCU movie of all time, and also that Cap's fighting style is cheff's kiss. They took a lot of inspo from the first Cap movie's PS3 tie-in game, which is very ballet-like and acrobatic, and it suits the character and the uniform very well.
