—Foundryside Review—
Enter a world with complicated technology, mysterious old gods, and greedy capitalist rulers.
Sancia is a thief with a secret skill that makes her the best hire for any job. But when she decides to keep something she was supposed to steal for someone else, all hell breaks loose. She ends up on the run from the people she stole from, the people she was stealing for, and the Captain of the Waterfront (which she burned down in the process of stealing the item).
She makes uneasy alliances against common enemies and is roped into saving the entire city from destruction.
The writing and world building for this book were stellar. I felt completely entranced by everything that Bennett had created. I’ve always been a character reader, but it was actually the plot that carried me through this one.
The characters felt a little lacking to me. I did love Sancia and Clef’s characters but everyone else felt one dimensional until the last 25%. I’m actually even more excited to read the next book so I can see the depth of the characters progress even more.
Two of the main characters are queer women, their romantic subplot is one of my favorite things actually. I was wary of sapphics being written by a man but, seriously, Bennett did a fantastic job writing them.
Overall, I give it four stars and I’m excited to read Shorefall when my audiobook hold is delivered (~6 weeks)
