shadowed by bright lights from shitty neon bar signs, you, megan, and yoonchae practically raced to the boy’s house. the sun had gone down two hours ago, and a cool breeze was cutting through the late august humidity. as the three of you rounded the corner onto james’s street, you could hear the steady pulse of house music in the air. your heart thumped with it’s rhythm as you got closer to the house, throat tightening. you were excited, the most excited you’d been for anything in a while. you’d replayed james’s words over and over in your head all week long, and more than once megan caught you staring at your phone blushing. it had made a difference, the reassurance, the honesty. so rarely had you ever received that- straightforwardness about feelings and intentions. it was an intoxicating clarity that had your heart jumping every time his name popped up on your phone. after stealing your phone and reading the text conversation, yoonchae had run circles around the living room of your apartment. all megan said was “told you so.”
you padded up the driveway and made your way into the backyard. you’d only really seen it out of james’s second floor window, and to be completely honest it had looked like a disaster then. but now, after what james had described to you as ‘hours of preparation’, it looked… good. the dj booth was set up in the back corner on a makeshift stage, and multiple elevated surfaces were scattered across the grass. the bar was adjacent to the shed, large bins full of ice and alcohol just off to the side. strobe lights shone down from the second floor balcony and atop the shed, illuminating faces in the dark.
“bar. now.” megan said, grabbing yours and yoonchae’s wrists and dragging you in its direction. two ATO guys (pledges, had to be) were working the bar, and you shouted your request for a white claw at one of them over the music. once the three of you had drinks in hand, you turned your attention to the party.
it was a decent crowd for only a pregame. you could pick out a few familiar faces, a few sorority girls you knew, some ATO guys from class, but you couldn’t find the boy you were actually looking for. that is, until you felt a tap on your shoulder.
spinning around, you lips quirked up into a smile when you saw james. he had on a vintage polo long sleeve and a pair of baggy jeans, beer in hand.
“hey.” you hummed, taking a sip of your drink and keeping your eyes on him. where your friends had gone, you did not care.
“you took your time getting here.” he teased, smiling. the way his eyes scrunched made your legs feel like jello.
“had to keep you on your toes.” you replied. “fit still good?” you asked, gesturing to your clothes. such obvious bait.
“incredible.” he hummed. “mine?”
you looked him up and down, smirking slightly. “meh.”
“meh?” he repeated, half exasperated, half laughing.
“i’m kidding james. you look great. very on theme.”
“good. thank you.” he said, flashing you that stupidly disarming smile again. “you wanna say hi to the boys?”
whoever the damn dj was needed to be paid good. the music was a mix of house tracks and early 2000’s classics that had you and your friends up on a picnic table in the middle of the yard. you swayed to the beat of (it goes like) nanana by peggy gou, third drink in one hand, the other clasped in yoonchae’s, spinning her around. megan had already completed her mission, telling two frat boys if they kissed each other, she would kiss them. they did, but when they pulled apart she was gone, running back towards you and yoonchae in a fit of evil giggles. you had managed to snag keonho’s sunglasses from him, but were lacking the two other items. yoonchae kept getting shy about getting up in the booth despite martin’s reassurances that no one would care, even offering to go with her.
the song ended, and the first few beats of on the floor by jlo started to play. megan let out a screech and you laughed, happy and loud. the night had been fun. and like real fun, free of guilt, free of worry. even when you weren’t at his side, you could feel james’s eyes on you, and it made you feel good. appreciated, adored, important. taking a step down onto the bench of the picnic table, you yelled up at your friends.
“either of you need a drink? going to bar.”
“all good babes.” megan said, raising her drink in acknowledgement.
“me too!” yoonchae chimed, tipsy smile plastered on bright red lips.
you nodded, and made the final leap onto the ground. pushing your way through a significantly larger crowd than had been there when you arrived, you made your way to the bar and took your place in line. you slipped your phone out of your back pocket, checking for texts or anything else to keep you entertained while you waited. the bass of the music hummed in your chest, and you glanced up from your phone for just a moment.
there, across the yard in a circle of people, was the devil incarnate. fucking noah. your stomach sank into your feet as he caught your gaze and smiled. it was like you were frozen in place. all you could do was stand there like an idiot, mind a flurry of anxious thoughts, stomach in knots. why of all places is he here? tonight? when everything was supposed to be perfect? when he started taking steps in your direction, you bolted.
in retrospect, you were pretty sure that the sorority girl in line behind you for the bar would be ecstatic about your sudden departure. in the moment, all you could think about was avoiding him. you ducked into the house through the back door, slunk through the kitchen past a gaggle of frat boys playing beer pong, and slipped into the first floor bathroom, practically slamming the door shut. back pressed to the wall, you let out few deep breaths, your heart rate beginning to slow. a pang of shame ran through your body. why did his mere presence still affect you like this- stun you, scare you? you had told yourself and several other people that you were over it, what had happened between the two of you. were you?
peeling yourself off the wall, you turned to examine your appearance in the mirror. staring at your slightly smudged lip liner, you remembered what megan had told you after it all came crashing down: “don’t push yourself to move past it,” she had said, her hands wrapped around yours. “he was a long chapter in the story of your life, take the time you need to process it. healing is never linear, so give yourself grace too.”
she was right. megan was always, always right. maybe you weren’t over the utter betrayal, the months and months of uncertainty and what that cost your self-esteem, but you were over him. over the stupid, idiot boy who had caused it all.
taking a final deep breath and smoothing out your top in the mirror, you opened your phone.
hand in hand with megan and yoonchae, you entered the backyard once more, a new drink in hand thanks to keonho, who was manning the reserves in the kitchen fridge. you had finally convinced yoonchae to complete her challenge by bribing her with taco bell later in the night. you had also managed to snatch one of martin’s bracelets. two out of three accessories down.
you watched as the tall blonde boy led your friend up to the booth, and smiled big and stupid when she awkwardly scooted in next to the dj. you whipped out your phone to take a video, falling into a fit of giggles as she gave in and started to dance. you turned to megan to show her, but you caught sight of a familiar silhouette on the balcony above you.
james stood, leaned against the railing, his back to you. juhoon and sean stood across from him, drinks in hand, along with a few other people you couldn’t name. in the blue and red hues of the strobe lights, you saw a girl you didn’t recognize leaned up against james, hand on the back of his neck.
a sinking feeling washed over you, your heart shrinking into your chest. of course.
it was always the same. get excited, believe someone was different, let your precious walls be broken down, just to have your hopes shattered like a mirror dropped onto stone. but james. after all he had told you, how he promised to earn your trust- you had really started to believe. believe that he was different, that he was finally someone you deserved. but as the past had proved to you, you should have expected disappointment.
clothes now feeling too tight, any trace you had of a buzz wiped clean, you slipped into the crowd quietly. away from megan, away from james and his stupid friends, away from it all.
you knew where the liquor was. keonho wouldn’t question you. you headed for the kitchen.
james and y/n noooo 😭😭😭 but part seven is here! this is a LONG one guys, but i hope u enjoy 😉
