If we take seriously the idea of Jonathan being impossibly young then he's at the opposite end of the Drac Attack Pack from Seward, in a way that becomes really funny to me.
The calculation I have seen gives us Jonathan at 21 (apprenticed at 16 + 5 years for his exams). Jack is 29. There could be as many as 8 solid years between them.
Especially if Mina is like 22-23. Age gaps between husbands and wives were expected up to a point because women became marriagiable after puberty and men became marriageable once they had a career. This is why 29 year old Jack is courting 19 year old Lucy. He's also impossibly young to be where he is professionally, and he's only just now entering the Sexual Marketplace as it were. Whereas Jonathan and Mina are implied to have been together for years and years - the relationship began before they were financially ready for it. Probably Jonathan proposed in conjunction with qualifying for his exams - once I am a full-blown solicitor then we can finally get married!
So Jack meets Mina who's in her early 20s and expects her to be married to a man - well, about his age, if not older. But you know, a godlike paragon of Manliness, to not only have escaped Castle Dracula but also to have won such a woman.
And then Jonathan arrives and he's gotta be like. Oh. He's a Baby. That is a Human Child.
And then 3 days later they're in Picadilly and it's all Baby have a KNIFE! No wonder he's trying to be protective.
Or maybe I'm projecting because my reactions to both babies and 21 year olds are also:
HOW do you have so much energy?
WHERE did you get that knife?
I will protect you with my life
