From now until September 7th voting is open for SXSW 2016’s PanelPicker site to let folks vote online for the panels they’d like to see presented at next year’s conference. Online votes account for 30% of the selection process, and help gauge the interest the topic has.Â
I’m proposing a music panel on behalf of Kickstarter to talk about independent hip-hop and the amazing ways some big artists are engaging their fans online. This year we saw huge Kickstarter campaigns from De La Soul, and Meow The Jewels (on behalf of Run The Jewels)  and many others. I think it’s important that the music industry hear the stories from the people behind these projects and I’d appreciate any support you can lend, here’s the info  -
“Can’t Tell Me Nothing: Independent Hip-Hop” Joined by representatives of De La Soul (wearedelasoul), Run The Jewels ( therealrunthejewels), Kickstarter (kickstarter) and the editor-in-chief of The Fader (thefader), we’ll discuss artistic independence in today’s hip-hop world — and the new tools and fan relationships some heavyweight hip-hop acts are using to preserve it.
To vote, you need a PanelPicker account (it’s easy to register and you’ll never get spammed). Once you’re signed in, click this link to view my panel and select the thumbs up on the top left corner of the page. Thanks!
Um, maybe the MTA shouldn’t place the ad for the Straight Outta Compton movie right next to the Biggie Sprite ad. (This is in a Brooklyn subway station, by the way….)
Rainer Maria (reunion show) December 31, 2014
Bowery Ballroom New York, NY
(click the photos to view full size) I have more of my pictures in a Flickr album.
In 2006 Rainer Maria broke up and each member of the band continued to make music either solo or as part of other projects. I had seen Caithlin de Marrais play solo once before (heck, guitarist Kyle Fischer even joined her for a few songs) but this was my first time seeing Rainer Maria play and I was incredibly excited for this show. Their last album, “Catastrophe Keeps Us Together” is one of my all-time favorites, I’d spin it endlessly in my car and sing along. Needless to say, I was stoked for the show. I wasn’t going to bring my camera - for fear that it’d get damaged (since there’s lots of drinking going on on NYE) but at the last minute I decided to just go for it. I was at the front during the main set, but left to go shoot in the balcony when they started their encore. I brought my zoom lens (my first time using it) and had better experience getting photos from the balcony. I learned a lot and I’m so glad that I shot this show, I now have a better understanding of what type of shooting conditions and which focal lengths are better suited for it. I also realized how badly I needed a low light lens, so with knowledge gained from this shooting experience, I figured out which lens to get next and went ahead and bought it today. The band was good, the show was good, the crowd was good - the energy was high, excitement in the air, and general enthusiasm and respect (the best kind of audience to be in!). I think I got some good shots, there’s a few I’m really proud of. Here are 10 of my favorite. The rest are here in a Flickr album. I still have a ways to go in learning (and especially learning Lightroom), but I’m content with how things came out. My eyes have glazed over staying up late to edit, so at some point I just went ahead and rush “this works, this is good enough” and exported… but sometimes it’s better that way, to just go and not be too precious about it.
