I'm going to roll my eyes at myself as I write this but golly, do I wish I had a few more local friends with whom I felt more alignment with. Tempermentally, in interests, et cetera.
I saw a movie with a friend of mine last night, someone who has been on my side during a few key moments and who enjoys art and performance. I am weighing if he's going through something right now because over the past year he's gotten steadily more negative. He meets everything I say with a "well, actually." He's Debbie-Downer maxxing.
Me: Oh, cute dog!; Him: It's cruel what we've done to dogs. Have you seen a pug's skull? It's disgusting. (Note: he brings up pug skulls several times a year. The dog wasn't a pug.)
Me: I'm enjoying working in the yard at the house I'm living now. It's meditative.; Him: Don't become one of those middle aged white guys who are obsessed with their lawn. Jesus.
Me: I love going to see old obscure movies at indie cinemas in the city. I really feel like I'm part of something with the other people watching.; Him: But that's not real community, you know that right? You can't replace real community with going to the movies.
Me: I really enjoyed that movie!; Him: People were laughing a lot and it wasn't that funny.; Me: It's local, I bet lots of those people were friends.; Him: Obviously. It didn't make sense otherwise.
And this is a friend who actively wants to spend time with me, and every time we do lately I just feel like I went on a bad date. He's a good person with a good heart, but the more time I make for him the lonelier I feel.
All this to say. I want more friendships that feel restorative and exciting. I'm happy to be in London next week.
i just need to have more rules for myself. more rules and limits. surely that will help me
and punishments. more punishments. surely that will help
George Tiller was murdered 13 years ago today (May 31 2022)
People noting this anniversary reminding me again that it is such an insane failure of the pro-choice movement that we do not as a nation think of George Tiller as a civil rights hero and additionally a martyr at the level of MLK Jr. or a Kennedy. So, you know, do your part, etc.
What's everyone's favourite flowers that aren't like. The normal ones. Like everyone's a fan of roses and sunflowers what's a more niche one. One you don't get in gift sets. Mine's sweet peas
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY
Some other topics:
anon who seems to be under the impression that you have had extensive PR training because you have a post with more than 10k notes would like to ask you a bad faith question about the current state of the world
apologies to anyone who followed me for tma. cow studies :) â€ïž

Paintings from a couple southeastern grand canyon trips. Posted a few of these before, finally got around to scanning them.

the reason the franklin expedition failed wasnât the scurvy or the lead or the path taken or starvation. it was the collective unconsciousâs love of poetic tragedy. the universe just could not resist incurring the demise of such a grand romantic failure. if they wanted to survive they shouldnât have represented the folly of colonial enterprise, simple as
The previously reblogged money garf has delivered, albeit darkly. (I have inherited money from the recent passing of a family member.)
It was more than expected and now I will absolutely be able to take a year off at 40. I feel sort of insane. It's going to happen.
I chatted with my financial advisor today (I am unquestionably her most small potatoes client but she's really good to me) and am getting things squared away for the sabbatical.
I was chatting with my best friend about it and he asked would it not be better to invest it for the next 27 years to have it when I retire. And you know, of course. That's the smart argument. But
My aunt died at 48 after six years of cancer treatments.
My friend's mom has spent her whole retirement caring for her aging parents then her husband who now needs full-time care.
The future feels increasingly uncertain and catastrophic.
I just wanna have a good time while I can, you know?
i have a bunch of disgusting ideas if anyone's interested
