Take This - State Of The Industry Promo One-in-four people struggle with mental health issues. Especially in the video game community, the idea that "no one will miss me if I'm gone" is a pervasive one. Take This was founded to let people know how wrong that is, and that there's help for people...
Our mission is to decrease the stigma, and increase the support for, mental health in the game enthusiast community and inside the game industry. by takethis.org
Self-doubt is not always low self-esteem
Deep down your self-esteem is there. Fight the demons of self-doubt and embrace your recovery work. Believing in yourself when it seems no one else believes in you is a challenge you can overcome. Don't wait for someone else to praise you and bring you red roses. Give it to yourself when you earn it. It is possible to pat yourself on the back. God did not design us to kick ourselves in the butt. Try it...it's physically impossible to do.

4. Don’t get stuck in the comparison trap.
If you compare yourself to other people all too often, to their successes and especially to their high-light reels that they share on social media then self-doubt can quickly creep up.
A better way to go about things is to compare yourself to yourself. To see how far you have come. To see what you’ve overcome.
And to see how you’ve kept going, succeeded and grown as a human being.

And How to Begin to Overcome It
by Jeff Barton - What to do about self-doubt.
Note: Let's narrow it down.
Hello there,
maybe you don´t know what I'm doing here. This is my documentary about the research, concept and development of my final major project question “Can you master mental health issues with a video game?”
To keep a long story short. I want to create a video game with the topic of mental health issues and how you can learn to deal with it while playing this game. In Addition, I would like to make a limited edition of this game with nice packaging, merchandise and so on.
But how to begin?
First of all. Let´s narrow it down. Mental health is so a big topic that I need a lot more time to research it than I have. So I´ve asked myself with which issue I have to fight mainly and have to deal every day. As a graphic designer where your work is so subjective and everybody love to tell you what they think about it. However, if you asked for it or not... You should have a lot of self-confidence... Let´s say I'm not so very confident. But I'm an expert in overthinking things, a passionate perfectionist and hesitate about new opportunities. All characteristics of self-doubt. So I´ve chosen “self-doubt” as mine topic. Hopefully, this research and project will help me to deal with it better and maybe can also help others that suffer from this issue.
_Can Graphic Design Save Your Life?_ was published earlier this year to coincide with GraphicDesign&’s "exhibition":https://www.itsnicethat.com/news/can-graphic-design-save-your-life-wellcome-trust-exhibition-lucienne-roberts-rebecca-wright-050917 of the same name that is currently on show at the Wellcome Collection. It examines the varied and vital relationship between graphic design and health, focussing on work that demonstrates how communication strategies and visual languages are employed to persuade, inform and ultimately protect. The book asks its contributors to respond to the title question and demonstrates how graphic design impacts what we notice, what we understand and the actions we take. “In short, we hope that readers of the book will think the answer to the question is: yes!”
the nice “it´snicethat” agency show 3 graphic design projects that support mental wellbeing. A graphical way of help with mental health like rising the awareness.
“When people are too lonely, they become monsters. That's exactly what happened to Kay. But she's not the only one - this ocean teems with creatures like her. Finding them could be the key to turning them back.” said EA
One great example of a design piece from another designer that works with the theme “mental health in a videogame” -> Loneliness
love to play it! <3
Can you master mental health issues with a video game?
AIMS
I want to make a video game with the aim to help people that suffer from mental health issues like procrastination, self-doubt, stress, insecurities and anxiety through playing these levels that show how to deal with it. In addition, I want to raise the awareness of psychological health because people need to accept that these issues are common and not something that they only make up in their mind. Mental health problems are a growing public health concern. They are prevalent not just in the UK, but also around the world. It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem1
IDEA
“Unchained” will be a 2D-adventure game where you have to help the character to unchain itself from bad habits-chains like „procrastination“ „stress“ „uneasiness“ „self-doubt“ and what else keeps it from reaching its dreams. You have to solve riddles, make decisions and to finally conquer these enemies. While playing you will learn how to unleash your own abilities and to be finally free to do whatever you want.
INVESTIGATED
For the sake of research, I played some other adventure games and solved some riddles. The concept of these could also be used for my own game. On the other hand, I downloaded some Apps that help to relax with music and watched some motivations videos and have read some self-care books.
I already investigated what methods out there against mental health issues like for self doubt writing a positive dairy or that it helps to keep moving if you suffer on procrastination. I also thought about the character design of mental health problems, how they are to conquer and what their level should look like. Now I’m working on a storyboard to clarify what will happen in detail.
CRITICAL THEORY
Can you master mental health issues with a video game?
That is something to be worth to be investigated but what I already know is that games are a perfect fit to learn new things and to introduce new behaviour.
A game is a promised way of Multisensory Approach to Learning. People generally remember 10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear, 30% of what they see, and 50% of what they see and hear.” Combining the senses, therefore, is of benefit to students of all learning styles.”2 Under these conditions, a game would be a perfect fit because while you´re playing you uses most of your senses. You’re reading, watching, and hearing at the same time while playing.
The method to introduce a new behaviour while playing VR-Simulation or AR-Simulation is already used by the industry to teach new employees to manage company machines for their own safety or how to build products without slowing down the manufacturing process through. So what has the new employee to do? The player has to act on these new behaviour terms and to make decisions. After that decision the player need to get instant feedback if this was the right decision or not. For the right, the decision the player gets a reward to bake this new behaviour into his system. A wrong decision shows the consequences. “One great example would be the creation of a sales learning platform called Zombie Sales Apocalypse, which is being used by insurance and pharmaceutical companies”3
INTENTIONS FOR THE REST OF THE REPORT
I would like to explore how professionals are dealing with problems like these. I want to try the tips of the motivations videos and self-care books really can help with mental health problems. In Addition, I want to book an appointment with the school psychologist and to talk to them about these problems. I also want to try these company games and other mental health video games and extract what I can use for my own game. Afterwards, I will ask some people to play my game and tell me what they learnt and think about it.
