Hey, I love the HxH APR plushie you made! I am going to make one :) could you point me the patterns you modified? I saw the resources you shared on how to modify patterns, but if there was anything about the patterns themselves I missed it.
Hey! So first of all, I am absolutely thrilled that you really like my APR plushie! I was so so proud of that project when I finished it and I’m happy it’s still getting love. I would also be SO excited to see yours when you’re done!
It was a project that I worked on for about two and a half years off and on in bursts of creative excitement. When it comes to making stuff, I tend to get an idea in my head and then improvise wildly until it somewhat resembles what I wanted. That’s all to say - I didn’t modify a pattern, I made it entirely from scratch, honestly, just to see if I could.Â
I don’t remember ever sharing pattern modifying resources, but I’m happy to give you the pattern I made for this project for free because… you will more than likely have to do some modifying/fudging of your own to make it! It is old and… not great. I did not have a lot of textile/sewing knowledge when I made it.Â
The paper I did it on has yellowed in weird ways so I took a picture of it all laid out and digitized it, which is under the cut, along with instructions based on what I vaguely remember from 6-7 years ago. Hope this all helps! <3
Here's the pattern!
I have no idea how one would go about printing this... if any pattern makers wanna DM me I'd love your insight. Ruler on the side for the scale of mine.
This was a project that I made up as I went! I hand-sewed everything because I didn't know how to use a sewing machine at the time.
I chose fabric based on colour and worked with what I had access to at the time. I would say use woven fabric for everything but the head bubbles (and then use knit or some other stretchy fabric), unless you know of a better way to make half-circles.
What I used:
For the head, body, wings, head cone, arms, and hands, I used a flannelette from Wal-Mart in blue and white.
The shoes and neck tie were made with felt.
The eyes and numbers were embroidered on with black embroidery floss.
The “head bubbles”... oh boy. I used a stretchy pair of black pants for the fabric. If you can create a bubble in an easier way than I did, please do so because for my process the stretch was absolutely integral. Take the dimensions of that pattern piece with a grain of salt.
Sew the darts of the body. Attach two mirrored pieces together at the straight seam, and then attach all four around the curved sides, leaving the “neck” open for turning and stuffing.Â
Turn and stuff both the head and body, and sew up the head. If you haven’t already attached the face pieces, you can do that now or after the next two steps (or at the end, I dunno, I can’t really remember when I attached mine in the process). I find it easiest to gauge where all the parts need to be when everything is stuffed. You can use a ladder stitch to attach the head to the neck. Make sure to turn the fabric of the “neck” in so no raw edges are showing before you attach them (follow the scalemate tutorial if you're not sure how to do this). The angle of the attachment makes a difference for the pose!
The “head bubbles”… I whipstitched the turned edge of about ¾ of the fabric to the head (eyeballing the placement) and then stuffed it with waaay more polyfil than I thought was necessary. The stretch of the fabric made the shape pop out, and I turned and sewed the remainder to get the cute bubble shape. If you want to make the bubbles in an easier way, PLEASE do so!
Sew the straight edges of the head cone together, turn and stuff leaving the bottom open. Attach to the head with a whip or ladder stitch, again eyeballing the placement. I looked at a lot of screencaps while I was making this. It should be in the middle of the head.
For the hands, sew the curve and leave open to turn at the “wrist”. Stuff and then sew over the stuffed hand with white thread to make the little fingers. No need to sew up the wrist, you can just cover it with the blue arm fabric.
For the arms, turn the long edge and sew it to the hand, eyeballing how big (as in long) you want the hand to be white before it turns into the blue sleeve. Then gauge how thick and long you want them to be compared to the body. I'm pretty sure that the pattern is too big for what you’ll actually want, but that gives you wiggle room to judge for yourself and cut it down to fit. If I were to do this again, I would make the arms slightly shorter and more conical, more like a sleeve pattern, so they sit more comfortably against the body. Once you're happy with the shape and have trimmed off most of the excess, sew the blue sleeve closed over the length of the arm, add more stuffing if need be, and ladder stitch them into the pose you want.
I attached the tie sometime around here. I turned the edges (no need to sew), wrapped it around the neck, and pinned it into place where the little bow will be. Trim off the excess. Sew the leaf-shaped pieces directly onto the long tie strip, and then use the top part of the tie (the small straight piece) to cover and hold everything together neatly. I think this part of the tie was the only part I sewed to the body. The tie is great for making APR's head and body look nice and neat!
Wings! Pretty easy to figure out imo. Sew both pieces together (leaving room to turn). Stuff and then sew closed. Sew over the stuffed wings where marked on the pattern with white thread to create grooves. Eyeball the placement on the back and then ladder stitch them on. Go around a few times for extra security.Â
Feet are the same as above, basically. Sew the darts, sew the sole and top together, turn, stuff, and attach to the body by the open side, eyeballing the placement. If you want to give him legs, use the same method you used for the arms.

both of us keep gushing about how cool Hinrigh is, haha. I think I've changed my tune on Tyson, i think she's cute and really sincere in what she believes, even though she's pretty naive. Rihan's ability is awesome, i really admire it. Terebellum?? has a really selfless ability????? i want to know more about him...
so many neat characters, so little time to draw them... maybe i'll make a crossword or word search or something instead
(my dad is retired and i work in person/at home depending on the day... this is what i always expect to come back to. we're both eager for the day when all the chapters are available in book form!)

Oh fairy, scatter my love beyond is a truly beautiful piece that made me consider at least 5 different concepts at once. Amazing prose, and such a tender, heart wrenching insight into what makes and unmakes Kurapika.

My visual choices ended up centering around his dualities - the elements of his past that he is sworn to avenge but is doomed to lose sight of, and the new selves he builds in order to hang on.
I couldn't help myself but to write a little poem down that popped into my mind as I drew, so it lives here too.

The milkweed cluster in the foreground represents the four people Kurapika was mourning most: Pairo, Mother, Father, & Elder.
Kurapika of the past/memory is facing right (looking towards the future) and Kurapika of the present is facing left (looking towards the past)
(That's according to Carl Jung's interpretations anyways lol)
But! In the memory, Kurapika is more focused on the woven flowers in front of him (representing strong familial love and respect, if I'm not mistaken).
I've found lots of interpretations for the meaning of milkweed/asclepias in the language of flowers - probably my favourite one was "let me go", so I gave the flower to Pairo to hold up.
I thought about including a butterfly with the milkweed flower (because that's what they're known for!) but decided against it last minute; after all, Pairo never got to grow up.
There is a candle in his lungs, lit from the first inhale taken within his mother’s embrace, his father’s hand gentle but firm against the crown of his head. That torch grows steady against the beating of their hearts, licks of flame clasping together in a pointed tip like hands in prayer. The midwives—whom he will soon know as his neighbors, fellow clansmen, friends—cheer with the release of nervous energy and in their raucous celebration, he begins to cry.
He loves from the moment he is born, and nothing will hurt him more.
Or: Kurapika, and a future cemented in the past.
