not expecting luca of all people, she is a little startled by his presence. the rain was messing with her hearing, she hadn't picked up the sounds of him in the building. jess takes the offered towels with a grateful smile. she starts drying her face, lamenting the glittery pink eyeshadow and black eyeliner and mascara that comes away on the fabric.
"thank you. i'm drenched." which is an understatement. jess appreciates the towel he wraps around her, looking up at him from beneath wet lashes. she probably looks a mess, makeup smeared and dripping water onto the floor.
at the mention of another shirt, she perks up a little. maybe she can be halfway decent for her shift, and not want to die from the itchy wet fabric clinging to her all day.
"do you? that would be amazing." she's stripping her damp shirt off as she speaks, half turned away from him but not really trying to hide. if he looks, well, that's between him and his eyes. jess runs the towel across her shoulders and chest, getting most of the moisture. Unfortunately, her bra is probably unsalvageable in terms of removing the wetness so she'd just have to be uncomfortable. and her jeans, ugh. talk about chafing.
"sorry about this, honestly. i'll grab the mop once i stop dripping everywhere." there's a puddle where she's standing, and has caught her attention. jess'll have to clean that up. after a minute of no response she finally looks back up at luca.
"yeah of course, i always keep one in my—" the rest of his sentence, as well as any coherent thoughts, quickly quit his mind. he was stunned, mostly because he hadn't been expecting anyone to strip in front of him so casually on his first week, but certainly not jessica of all people. he had eyes, one's that he couldn't seem to keep to himself at the moment, and from their first meeting he'd been awestruck by how gorgeous she was. and the more chances he had to know her, it became evident her warmth and kindness were a fitting match. he'd been nursing a crush on her silently since the very first day.
her gaze lifted to his and he finally snapped out of his stupor, shaking his head rather violently to get the thoughts out and screw his head back on straight. heat flashed across his features, creeping up the back of his neck. he dropped one of the towels down to the puddle, feigning interest in the linoleum as he cleared his throat. "no, yeah. just. yeah, one second."
he managed to make it back to his locker without tripping over his feet or walking into a wall, which was truly a feat considering his thoughts were fried harder than an egg. he mindlessly opened the cabinet, rummaging until he pulled out his extra t-shirt, and shuffled back to the front rather robotically. he managed a somewhat normal smile by the time he returned. "here. you'll be swimming in it, but at least it's dry, yeah?"
i don’t know how to flirt, but i can make things awkward if you’re into that…?

it wasn't often either of them had days off so there was no way in hell that sydney was going to waste the opportunity she'd been presented with. it was already late, well beyond closing, and there was plenty already waiting for them to deal with in the morning. but none of that mattered right now. tomorrow, she could deal with the bullshit. tonight, she was focused on this.
baby. it zings through him like lightning. the fear, self—doubt, and anxiety bubbling in his chest simmers and calms, soothed at her words, her voice, the fact he is hers. because that’s what that means, isn’t it? he is sydney’s baby.
“always. you know i’m nothing without you.” little bit of self—deprecation leaks through, though he believes every word. carmen is very easily a wreck if not for syd’s steady presence. he takes a drag on his cigarette, exhaling long and slow. the smoke clings around his head.
“i’m sure sugar will love that, she’s been busy with the baby.” and isn’t he just an awful brother that he hasn’t gone over to help her yet? carm makes a mental note to see if he can tag along when syd delivers the soup.
“just called to hear your voice. you doing okay?” it’s more than that, and he takes a deep breath, finally calming. carmen hates getting like this, feeling like a bad person, bad partner, letting the anxiety overtake his rational thinking. he’s never known how to not be this way. he’s lucky that syd indulges him.
she can't help but smile stupidly at the stock, watching the liquid bubble up and wondering if that's what her heart looks like right now. all warm and light and dancing at the vibrant all over his joke. there was probably a little truth to his words, at least in his own deluded mind, but they were both in the business of delusion these days so who was she to judge. "you're lucky i'm too distracted to argue." she made a mental note to squabble later, listing all the ways he was decidedly not nothing.
"yeah. she mentioned yesterday that pete's going out of town this week for work so i wanna make sure she's fed." the place hadn't been as much of a wreck the last time she dropped by, but nat was adamant about being a host whenever sydney was there, so she tried to make a drop and run more often than not. she moved around the kitchen, a dancer commanding the stage with silent, graceful movements. she split her focus with ease, the muscle memory of chopping vegetable and slicing cutlets.
his words floated to her ears like one of those old school r&b ballads, making her heart flutter and warming her all the way down to her toes. sometimes, in the worst moments, she felt frozen, ice encasing her something solid and fierce, but carm had a way of melting all those anxieties. even with something as simple as a phone call. jesus, she was a goner. "yeah, your voice isn't too bad either."
she finally put a lid on the stock, wiping her hands on the towel at her waist before leaning against the counter, her entire focus on the other side of the line. "i'm better now." she admitted, something that was starting to become easier. somehow, for someone so good at talking, she'd never been as skilled at opening up. knowing that carm wanted to hear things, needed to, well that made the whole thing a million times easier. like she wasn't laying a burden on someone, they were working through all the shit. together. "what about you.. you okay?" the shake in his voice seemed to even out at least. "everything good? busy today?"
