The second he sees him, his legs suddenly cannot carry him any faster. They collide as they did as children, with Zhilan winding his arms around his brother like the timid boy in their village again, glossy-eyed and searching for him.

❝ You're still here, ❞ Zhilan croaks, his eyelashes dampened from how hard he tightens them shut. He did not know what waited for him here. Whether anything waited for him still, for time often washed people away like an ocean to granules of sand. There is a squeeze, and then he stands back with an arm braced on his sibling's shoulder, stubbornly scrubbing aside the wet globs at the corner of his eyes before they can spill. ❝ Sorry. Ha… Look at me, getting all torn up. You didn't leave, so it's okay. ❞ A sniff, then a smile. It looks more natural on Zhilan than tears ever could, truer to his relief. ❝ You've been—well, I hope? ❞

Haochen feels his breath partially knocked out of him when he’s squeezed in a hug, but he hardly hesitates to squeeze back seeing who it is, holding on for however long Zhilan allows it. “And you’re back.”

He sounds relieved about that fact. Zhilan is the first to part from the hug, and Haochen has furrowed his brows when met with a tearful expression, yet it is soon replaced with the usual smile.

“Yes, I’ve been…” He pauses, pulling out a handkerchief and wordlessly offering it, sure Zhilan would rather him not draw attention to it, though it doesn’t stop him from resting a firm comforting hand over the one on his own shoulder. “I think I have been well. With warmer days coming, some people are anticipating when I might start doing public storytellings more often.”

He certainly seems to think this is a positive.

“But I am also glad to see you’re safe. How are you? Do you have somewhere to stay?”

Haochen would be much more at ease knowing whether or not Zhilan had somewhere safe to go, but he wasn’t sure the state of his situation at this moment.

The ghost of a smile passed her lips, a small comfort that his solitary attendance were by design and not the show of a failure to invite others. and he appeared content enough, so there would be no need for concern.

She took pause in consideration — many a WinterFes had passed across her experience in Spirale, and numerous without so much as glancing its way, her sword taken up in preparation for threats that never manifested. It might do harm to humour him, stroll through the local venue and observe how much the festivities had evolved. "Very well". A finger drew towards the pamphlet. "Has anything caught your attention to check out?"

”Ah, well… I’m already quite full after visiting the soup pot in Fibonacci. Maybe visiting some of the trinket stalls, sightseeing, or enjoying some activities…” It wouldn’t hurt to burn off some energy after eating his fill of food after all. “I had considered going skating sometime today as well, but I suppose that depends on whether you’d be willing to join for an activity like that if you’re tagging along. There’s always much to see and do, and I do believe there are some new activities this year too? Is there nothing you’d like to suggest?”

Maybe if they each pick one or two attractions it’ll be easier to narrow down what places they’ll be visiting.

a while ago, i decided to get a simple solo piece of haochen enjoying dancing, something that he loves, since the only other full art he has is his reference sheet right now. it's probably one of his favorite hobbies, even if it took a lot of practice to become decent at it. he mostly did this in his free time while in the village, and it remains a hobby that breaks up the monotony of his days in a larger city. he seems to enjoy pursuing varied artistic hobbies like this, learning and reading about them to further his knowledge and try new techniques.

"I think perhaps while it is hard to watch people leave this place from time to time, that living in a small countryside village may have made me a little bit... too used to seeing people leave. In such a small community, many younger people leave as soon as they're old enough and head into the city for work or something along those lines. I don't think that makes it easier per se, but I always reminded myself that most people were going on to do better things. I can only hope the people who leave here are also fortunate enough to have good things waiting for them at home."

Unfortunately, he knows not everyone could be so fortunate. But better to throw well wishes to the wind and hope it reaches someone, at least.

"As for me... well. I'd like to return to my home some day. When I've gotten old, I think it's where I'd almost certainly retire and care for the village however I can. Without that place, I don't think I would be here today. But I don't know what my future looks like with being stuck here instead."

Their ways once crossed during a previous WinterFes, making their doing so again strangle timed. en route to the smaller island, she had question as to whether an event tied to the festival called him, or the travel be more to escape the annual commotion.

"you are alone again this time," she commented. "Have you succeeded in linking with friends with whom you seek to attend the festivities with? I do not ask to be rude or pry — mere curiosity".

Haochen has his nose buried in a guide of activities and information when he hears a voice that seems somewhat familiar, although with how long it's been it takes him a moment to recognize that this is his companion from his first WinterFes experience. A welcome presence though, shown in how he closes the pamphlet and acknowledges her with a brief and small smile.

"Well... yes, I am attending alone again." He doesn't find it all too strange, considering it's a place full of people already, so surely no one would notice him wandering about taking in the sights and stopping on occasion to enjoy some of the festivities. "It didn't occur to invite someone this time around, but it's not as though I'm opposed to company, if you're worried about that."

hello, i'm back and since last time i finally got haochen an updated and more full design! these are his outfits, his accessories, and a small expression sheet where he also dabbles in a couple hobbies! i referenced some outfits and their design elements directly from in game while working on this with the artist to then make the outfits more unique to haochen and am super happy with the outcome!

a lot of things happened between the holidays and the new year which resulted in spotty activity and in the case of this blog, radio silence, but things have at least somewhat gotten better so i'm hoping to boost my activity again. we'll see where that goes. for tonight i'm not going to do much (i don't like to do replies on meme day in case it gets lost in the shuffle) but maybe in the next few days i'll try to get something out here

“I wonder if I might find some new recipes to try, but without a second set of hands to be my taste tester I’m afraid it won’t be effective as I may be biased to my own cooking. And then there’s finding spices and fresh ingredients, but the price of things here…” While he’s enjoyed the freedom to do his storytellings in a new location, it doesn’t necessarily earn enough money some of the time. “Well, I’ll figure it out. I’m sure I can find more work if I look in the right places.”

"So you've.. been here before?" it seemed such a strange concept to Zelda.. considering how she watched her people suffer when they were taken into the rifts. This place was different-- scary in some ways, but also somewhat welcoming, despite that she was hesitant to take it at face value.

"It is quite nice to meet someone who has experience, though I.. worry, really, about staying here for an extended period of time. Is there no way of telling when we can leave..?"

“I don’t know about how experienced I am with this, but I have been here before, this is true.” He doesn’t want to dash her hopes of having someone present who knows what they’re doing, but it’s best probably not to let her think he’s extremely knowledgeable about it.

“I can, however, still help you with some things. I know as of now it seems there is no way back to where we came from, for as much as I’ve tried to figure it out. Others have said the same, about not being able to leave. Rather, it is up to the ones who brought us here whether we stay or go, seemingly, but I personally haven’t seen them.”

This is a familiar place to be in the sense that this isn’t his first time experiencing it. But the ward he’s been led to is not the home he remembers from last time, though his belongings still remain.

But he can’t possibly stay here and be at peace with himself.

So he wanders toward familiar territory, passing time picking up groceries, enough for a meal that can be shared and some teas from a shop he’d frequented the last time he was in this place, intent on not showing up empty handed where he presumes Zhilan still lives.

On arrival, while carefully balancing the paper bags in his arms, he raps his knuckles against the door a few times and waits anxiously to see if anyone answers. He really hopes so, given his showing up unannounced.
