Buster Keaton
If anyone has not yet had the pleasure, I highly recommend checking out Mark Cousins' 12-Part documentary series The Story of Film: An Odyssey. For you Buster-philes, he covers Keaton's career in some great detail as part of Episode Two (linked above), but overall it's a very enthralling series.Ā
Find it on Netflix or the Internets, it's definitely worth checking out. :-)
In portraits, though supremely photogenic, he doesnāt give himself to the camera the way Garbo did. It is here, not in his lucidly expressive film acting, that his face functions as a mask. He looks like what Orson Welles called him, āa man of secretsā.
