Beyond Gay: Dead Ringers and Queer Perceptions
The authenticity is affected when this type of casting occurs. Modern Family claims to be very well rounded and accurate to the modern family. But there are more negatives than positives when it comes to this issue. A straight character playing a queer character will never get it right, even if they can portray the stereotypical gay man well. No matter how hard they try to play the gay man, the gay man does not just have a flamboyant side, but other sides that Modern Family as a whole is missing with Cam’s character.
The queer audience’s reaction exactly...
In response to the last video...
In this episode, for example, Cam tells Jay that in order to be a part of the bowling team for the night he had to pretend to be gay. Jay then asks Cam if the other guys will know or pick up on the fact that he isn’t gay, in which Cam then lists off the ‘type’ of gays. Playing a fake gay character influences how the actor acts and how they deal with angry fans in a very negative way.
Then there are those he encounter who don’t believe the actor is straight in real life. ‘What I get is a lot of guys who come up and want to challenge my sexuality.’ He also gets hit on sometimes. ‘Fuck yeah,’ says the actor. ‘I’m a type.’
Gay Source News
This is the problem. He thinks because he plays a gay character he can go around and flaunt that he is ‘a type’. It is the arrogance that he now carries with him because he believes he is now a part of the community because of the role. It is irritating that he plays such a fun loving and outgoing character and then ruins it by having a conceded and arrogant attitude towards other gay men.
Modern Family is one of the shows on prime time television that say they are supporting and representing a well rounded family. However with some further analysis, many queer fans of the show are pretty upset about the “fake gay” character that many have come to love. Eric Stonestreet, the actor who plays Cam Miller, has been scrutinized because of the fact that he is a straight male playing a flamboyant gay character. To people watching from a straight perspective, there is no issue; he is a great actor and pulls off playing a gay character extremely well. But from a queer audience perspective this type of fake gay inclusion is harming the queer communities representation in film and television.

no offense but i am incredibly adorable and every woman who is not currently kissing me is missing out
are you gay?
The scene of Darryl singing, in this musical series, about how is is bisexual is what I am talking about!!! It’s over dramatic and eccentric and shows off his self confidence! That needs to be seen more instead of characters that are embarrassed or shy about being queer.
I wish this was seen more in contemporary television! The self love and acceptance of one’s identity is finally acknowledged. In this particular scene Darryl approaches Josh, after hiring him to be his personal trainer, and attempts to get Josh to keep their “relationship” a secret. Josh refuses because he is happy with who he is a a person. According to the book, Queering the Horizon the author states “... social asymmetries are absent in the dominant LGBTQ leadership community and in many aspects of queer critiques” (20).
In the television series, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, there is plenty of the stereotypical boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl structure. However there is one particular queer character that takes my interest and his name is Darryl, the main character’s divorced boss. This “straight” man is not so straight after all, after he meets a good looking guy named Josh. Josh makes it very clear throughout the seasons he is gay, but Darryl keeps denying it until the very last episode of Season 1. Finally they kiss and he comes to terms with himself.

By rejecting conventional social mores, polyamorous women were forced to create their own roles and examine their sexual relationships.
