What does medicine look like for different magical creatures in your world?

Do you know the anatomy across different magical creatures in your world?

What is the calendar cycle for your fantasy world? Is it similar to ours? Different?

Are there any potions or spells that are illegal or banned in your fantasy world?

Follow up to that question, does the legality of different spells and potions vary from nation to nation? For a nation’s system that leaves it to local governments, province to province or state to state?

You probably hear a lot of "DON'T EDIT AS YOU WRITE" advice, don't you? 😬

This is a dangerously vague piece of advice and one that's often taken too literally. Here's a quick breakdown of edits that are actually GOOD during writing.

I loosely disagree. While it’s great to fix those things if you can, sometimes you have to just get through the draft and come back later. My mentor even told me to write things like [fight scene happens here] or [this conversation is really boring] if I needed to in order to propel myself through the first draft.

Don’t get me wrong, it is super helpful if you can fix those things while writing. But speaking for myself (and a lot of people like me) that is not always possible. Sometimes any fixes can completely stall your progress.

For me, it is much easier to go back and edit for content, plot holes, info dumps, and unnecessary dialogue after I’ve done the hardest thing for me, which is the writing.

My point is that it’s all about finding what process works for you and sticking to it. If this works for you, great! If not, don’t beat yourself up about it.

A recipe for finding your story's plot:

Ingredients:

2 cups of Things that must be in the story (this can be characters, specific scenes, settings, subplots etc.)

1 cup of Vague plot ideas I may not use

1 tbsp of Central Themes

1 tsp of Ending (either happy, tragic, or bitter-sweet)

1 tsp of Protagonist's Primary Motivation

2 lbs of Brick Wall

Time, as needed

Instructions:

In a large bowl, mix Things that must be in the story. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, sift together Vague plot ideas I may not use. Discard the excess and set aside.

Add Themes, Ending, and Motivation to a small jar. Screw lid on tight and shake until mixture becomes Conflict.

Pour Conflict and Vague plot ideas into Things that must be in the story. Blend on medium until Plot Points form.

Taste.

If it is still missing something, smash head against 1 lbs of Brick Wall for one to six hours.

Let marinate for one to 365 days. Add more Things and Vague plot ideas as desired.

Smash head against the rest of the Brick Wall for one to six hours.

Scream.

Repeat steps 5 through 9 as needed.

After sufficient marination, the mixture will form an idea. This will tell you what specific action must happen in order to resolve your story's conflict. Write this down and make appropriate sacrifices to thank whichever deity took pity on you.

Now you have your conflict, climax, and resolution. You just have to figure out how to get there. Good luck with the damn middle section dork!!

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!
