Storytelling Today is a project that aims to document interesting examples of storytelling, whether these are transmedia projects, videos, platforms, campaigns, blog posts, or anything else in between. While we do make digital products most of the time, we’re not really a digital media company, but that’s really just because our audiences spend so much time on digital networks and platforms. We’re more interested in the challenge of how you can get attention, and in particular how you can create patterns of storytelling that bring audiences back over time, and build loyalty. A lot of story projects aim for a ‘spike’ – a short burst of lots of attention, like you get when something goes ‘viral’. We’re more interested in longer patterns – how can you get someone to come back to a story project ten times? Or to come back regularly every week? Some of the project’s we’re doing will run over multiple years, which is the very antithesis of most short-run marketing campaigns. But this is where we think the real challenge, and value, is – building loyal audiences around your stories, rather than just temporary spikes.

In order to both show how a crisis unfolds and how different stories connect to each other, Method and Coda had to build new storytelling devices. The marquee tool is a Current. Currents get plotted out on calendars and pertain to one thematic hook, like violence, or fragmentation of the state, in the case of the Ukraine example. They both “provide a meta-commentary that lets you see the intensification of that trend” Fielding-Smith says, and offer several thumbnail entry points to longer stories. Readers can also view multiple currents at once for a bird’s eye view of when certain turmoil or events began and ended.

4 Media Companies That Get the Art of Brand Storytelling

For this article, I decided to check out what some media companies are doing to pioneer new ways of storytelling. And, as it turns out, they’re doing a lot. Many are pushing the boundaries both in the stories they’re covering and in the ways they tell those stories. The tools of their trade no longer consist of only the written word and still photography. Rather, they are immersing us in an interactive visual and audio experience that connects with us emotionally and stimulates our senses. Here are four examples that stand out.

Digital space has made this aspect of consuming comics both much easier and even more difficult. It’s possible to find the very beginning of almost anything, but the easy availability of an entire catalogue makes it clear exactly how much you have to consume to catch up. That knowledge can serve as a challenge, or deter someone from beginning something entirely. In the case of Homestuck, it's both. For while most comics have designated entry points into the story in the form of arcs, Homestuck is one elaborate, self-referencing inside joke collapsed inside its own funhouse mirror reflection.

“If you could re-tell Stephen Fry’s memoir, how would you do it?”   CALLING CREATIVE MINDS TO COME TOGETHER AND RE-CREATE: Artists | Filmmakers | Theatre Practitioners | Gamers | Coders | Writers | Designers | Illustrators | Sound Designers| Story Tellers TumharaFRY is an extension of the global project YourFRY a digital storytelling project that brings together creative individuals to re-imagine cultural powerhouse Stephen Fry’s latest works. The project is initiated by Stephen Fry in collaboration with Penguin Random House and is presented in India by UnBox Festival together with KHUBLEI and antiSOCIAL  

TumharaFRY brings storytelling to the 21st century, in its most compelling form – dynamic, interactive stories told through mixed media. A storytelling project as dense as this is difficult to manage single handedly, TumharaFRY aims to connect you with a set of people who will trade their skills with yours to co-create a collective retelling. TumharaFRY is, thus, looking for creative individuals who will respond to Fry’s challenge and show an esteemed panel (including Stephen Fry himself and also the likes of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web) the power of the Indian deconstruction. 

When:  Friday, 28th November 2014 Time:   10 am – 6 pm Where: antiSOCIAL, 3rd Floor, 9A & 12, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi HOW:

We’ll spark the day off with short presentations and ideas from those who have created/ co-created/ recreated in several mediums - art, gaming, theatre, books, film, music…

We will then put you in groups of 4 or 5 and you get going…

At the end of the day – we’ll have many retellings, which will be uploaded and sent to the panel!

   The “Stephen Fry & Friends” panel comprises of an interestingly eclectic set of people.

Stephen Fry is, of course, one of the most famous names in the comedy circuit. He Is also an author, director and a presenter.

Claire Lee is the Managing director of Corporate Venture at Silicon Valley Bank and works mostly with founders, entrepreneurs and early stage companies.

Elan Lee, is the Chief Design Officer at XBOX Entertainment Studios. He has spoken all over the world on the future of gaming and the role of storytelling within this future.

Lance Weiler founded the Digital Storytelling Lab at Columbia University and has been an alumnus of the Sundance Screenwriting Lab. BUSINESSWEEK named Lance “One of the 18 Who Changed Hollywood.”

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web, will also be going through your submission. Need we say more?

Lovers of storytelling: watch out for the @twfictionfest from March 12-16

I like this idea: Twitter is holding an all-day + night celebration of storytelling from March 12-16, where a showcase of authors will create fiction on Twitter. You have until February 5th to submit your idea for a story. If you're selected you participate as a featured author, but anyone can participate during that period using the hashtag #twitterfiction. There's an interesting list of authors already lined up, including Alexander McCall-Smith.

Just heard about @blinkamovie & StoryPod, free short film streaming app

StoryPod offers 200 high quality short films and a synchronized short film TV-channel for free. They've just launched their Android app. Films are on average 7 minutes long and all are story-based short films. I've given it a quick whirl and it looks interesting. 

StoryPod Short Films is a mobile extension of short film social cinema Blinkamovie (www.blinkamovie.com).

.@SharedEpic is a collaborative storytelling project by @rosencrantz, Gabs Roman (from @NovelIdeasPod), @NickRuffilo

Interesting new collaborative storytelling project launched yesterday helmed by three authors, SharedEpic.com uses a Google Doc to allow readers to input into the narrative. The story is science-fiction 'with a splash of comedy'.

Each time there is a cliffhanger, the story will be published as an e-book on Amazon. Chapter One is available now.

Memory Palace @V_and_A curated by @ligayacurates & Laurie Newell

I was at a talk a few months ago where the curators of Memory Palace, this new exhibition at the V&A spoke about the rationale behind it - must visit soon.

Mr Kunzru was keen to be a part of this endeavour because “in an age of infinite reproductability [they] wanted to create something that is physical and valuable as a live experience”. This exhibition may not be the immersive experience the V&A had envisaged, but its bold vision has produced some intriguing works of contemporary art, and ventured, albeit waveringly, into a new dimension of storytelling.
