"Passions in the Dark Series" © 2014 By: H. Dirk Macgrieve “In a New York Minute” It's only seven letters, two words. Funny how something so small can have such an impact on your life. Jennifer never would have dreamed this would be her ending here. This whole chain of events involving her and Christian was already starting to take a strain on her health, mentally and physically. Everywhere she looked he was there. His voice whispered in her mind. The feel of his hand on her body still constantly on her mind. The smell of him still on some of her things. The temptation to make the drive back to the brownstone was something she fought daily. She wasn't good enough resounded over and over again in her head, as all her doubts and insecurities bubbled to the surface. All of it was making her sick. She had lost her appetite and when managing to get something down, her nerves kicked in and back out it would come. Lauren was now worried about her also never wanting to leave the bed or her room, choosing the darkness, but when Jennifer mentioned she would be leaving it wasn't well received either. That wasn't exactly what Lauren meant when she said Jennifer needed to interact more with people. Finally after some thought, Lauren understood and agreed to help her best friend pack. It wasn't anything against her friend, all Jennifer's mind was thinking was any place but New York had to be better. The villa was the farthest place she could think of, where just being there would comfort her mind and feed her soul. Plus nobody would know her, and again she could blend in, but wasn't that what brought her to the city in the first place. Somehow that had not worked out ever so well, now she was skeptical. She sat buckled secure in her seat thinking of the first time she ever heard of this place, was when her Aunt Verna was telling her Mama that Cousin Lyle had disappeared and they all figured he was lying dead in an alleyway somewhere in that God forsaken place, as her Aunt explained. At the tender age of eight years old, Jenn truly had no idea what or where that was, but it scared the daylights outta her. The way her Aunt Verna said it with her stern look and that sharp tongue every time she mentioned this foreign place and the way her Mama agreed was good enough for her to be scared. Then later she recalled; how her Mama use to tell her, the devil lived in that New York City place. While Violet hung the wet clothes out on the line to dry for the day. She made her little girl promise never to go to any place like that when she grew up. Always reminding her of that, what they had here was enough. Jennifer would find a nice church boy from a nearby county, court him, settle down and have lots of babies just like every woman in her family had always done in the past. As the obedient child, her reply was always, "Yes, Mama." Yet, when she was forced to leave her home during her teenage years, that was the first thought in her mind, of where to go and hide. According to her, the demons there couldn't be any worse than the ones she faced here. So had she been doomed from day one, fleeing to "the devil's playground" as Pastor Igo use to say in his Sunday sermons, which now come to think of it was how he referred to all big cities, Jennifer's mind wondered in silence as she looked out the window of her plane now taxing down the runway. Seems some things are fated to happen, or this was her punishment. At the moment, she wasn't quite sure which it was and she had no plans on returning in the near future fearful that history would repeat itself. © 2015 By: Ms. Jennifer Stowfield “The Personal Assistant”
