It's from Jessie L. Watson's English translation of the Parzival epic. Its basically talking about Feirefiz's parents, and he's singing the whole poem--
With a masenqo. I wondered if I should give the begena instead, for it's religious associations, but idk if he could carry such a big thing on a horse, plus I liked the sound of the masenqo better. Seems this one is also an ancient instrument that can be used in churches..
The deep purple kaba ( royal cloak) hes wearing, I figured that can show his royal status, and high ranking clergy wore it too at times.

Speaking of, his horse is a palfrey, a type of lightweight horse in medieval times used for travelling by knights. And I read that a lot of Ethiopian saints are depicted on horseback! As Ethiopia has a large horse population, is one of the reasons I'm guessing.
And finally, the lone turtle dove references some of the lines from the translation again:
And sorrow with her heart struggled, and e’en as the turtle dove
Her joy sought the withered branches, for the same mind was hers, I ween,
When the mate of the turtle diet, she forsaketh the branches green.
About his mother! And so he goes, singing his song….
