i’m learning how to use the platform so i apologize if i don’t know basic terms and whatnot. i’m not too keen on chatting with other people, but a small convo in the comments is fine :)
my main interests right now are: vocaloid, roblox, ace attorney, tomodachi life, a PLETHORA of gacha games, and azumanga daioh (subject to change in the future…..lol)

Question.. How do you write a character of a nationality not your own, without panicking over whether you're going too far and entering into stereotype territory, or not going far enough and making them generic?

The thing that helped me most was shifting the focus from nationality as an identity to nationality as a context. Like your character isn’t defined by where they’re from, they’re a specific person who grew up in a specific place that shaped them in specific ways. So instead of thinking “what do people from x country act like” you think “what did this particular person grow up around, what did their house smell like, what did their parents argue about, what’s the one thing from home they can’t find anywhere else.” that’s where the specificity comes from and specificity is what kills stereotypes.
And before you even start writing that character, actually do the research. like properly. films, music, news, social media made by people from that country, not about them. You start picking up on humor and references and the small cultural textures that you’d never find in any writing guide. And if you have access to someone with that nationality, just ask them. Most people are really open to it when they see you genuinely trying to get it right rather than just winging it :D
