She lowered her eyes, exhaling quietly. ââI see.â She was silent
for a moment, looking troubled, appearing to consider. ââof
course, if thatâs whyâitâs unfair of Andrew, butâI think itâs
all part of a bigger problem for him.â She paused, glancing up.
âHeâs mentioned similar things to me every now and then,
about Jason, and I knowââ She held up her hand, for fear
that he might interject.
ââI know he appreciates that youâre trying to do right by Jason,
butâheâs worked for you longer, and he knows other people
whoâve worked for you longer, and I think itâs hard for him,
and easy to feel as though Jasonâs getting some sort of
preferenceâeven if nothing unfairâs going on.â
His hands fisted, and he swallowed thickly; clamped teeth over his tongue, but by the time heâd got to speaking, there wasnât much left to bite back, and he felt the warmth beneath his stock begin to fade.
â------aye.â He raised a hand to his brow, head ducking, fingers coming to pinch the bridge of his nose. âReckon itâs me own fault in part------this time around, I mean. I shouldâve never given Jason the money like I did. Thought about telling Andrew itâd come from somewhere else------saying it had nothing to do with any profits weâd turned, that is. But I had no way of knowing what heâd heard already. Couldnât very well count on that working out favorably.â
