Actually, I have a different theory on why vampires need blood: They can no longer create red blood cells because they are undead. It appears to be their one big weakness (besides sunlight) in that they still need sustenance to survive. If their red blood cells are no longer being produced, then they eventually start to break down and can't carry oxygen to their cells/muscles since RBCs only have a short life of approximately 120 days, which would eventually lead to death. So they have to steal RBCs from humans (a modern day vamp should just work at a blood bank to be honest) to be able to survive.

The Crew! Seriously, Samurai Deeper Kyo is my top manga. The story, pace, and characters worked so well and was so entertaining, I re-read every few year (just started, actually). The Shiseiten (4 Emperors) were the best Quirky Miniboss Squad. Hotaru is my favorite, but Akari is a strong second.
