Beetee Latier was the victor of the 34th games who won with the infamous spectacle of taking out six tributes at once... Labeled as intelligent and incredibly dangerous, he made a name for himself as the Capitol's most prized genius... and after the 49th games, gained a potentially more dangerous ally. And after the events of the 50th games, he became determined to destroy the system... He is a fox in a henhouse, biding his time as the Capitol believes they have secured his loyalty... stalking side by side with the one they hoped had been his reminder that there were fates worse than death... Maybe the biggest mistake they made was letting him live... because now he'll ensure the system is built to fail

// Beetee Latier is relatively composed. It often takes a lot to make him angry, and even more to let it really show... One of the quickest ways is leveraging the deaths of his family (though the deaths of Ampert, Mae and Riven were unintended consequences of his own actions) against him, oftentimes used more during the rebellion as a reminder of what he should fight for. During the event of Mockingjay, Beetee is constantly on edge. He sets to anger quickly whenever someone interrupts him or dares to argue with him about the reality of what's happening. Because Beetee's own guilt is at war with what little humanity is left uncategorized in his heart... because Beetee's always chosen to strip himself of humanity in order to not think about the consequences of his duties on other, it was war after all. There are always casualties. In a post-mockingjay setting, the quickest way to set him off is bringing up Wiress in any capacity. He carries immense guilt because she exists as the only ghost he can't escape because while he believes that his family's deaths were not in vain once the Capitol fell, he now understands that District 13 never wanted the only person left in the world that he trusted, they just wanted to use him in the same way the Capitol did, exploit his mind and body.

@whatsbehindthefacade (for Axel) Beetee Latier had never been a good fighter. If he was honest, he'd won his games by an accident and dumb luck. And now he'd seemed to survive this far into the arena by dumb luck. He'd gotten his district partner killed... but there was no use in dwelling on that. The least he could do was make sure that everyone he'd ever cared for didn't die for nothing. The others were far away from the lightening tree as Beetee wrapped the wire coils around it's trunk. If he can stay alive long enough to get this done, Beetee hopes it will be enough to finally end this whole thing... He doesn't hear the sound of movement. He doesn't even hear anyone approach. Because the engineer had lost his lookout... which made his lack of spatial awareness while working incredibly dangerous.

The blood was hot and clinging to his skin, the humidity didn't make it any easier... neither did the now dulled pain in his back from the knife that had gotten imbedded into his back at the Cornucopia. He was aware enough that he was gripping Wiress's hand on one side and pulling the wire coil with the other... he didn't know what she was saying, repeating the same broken phrase over and over... if Johanna's anywhere he isn't sure. He's certain they don't make it to the beach... he's even more certain of that when the woman he's pulling with him trips and they both plummet down the embankment. Beetee feels his chest tighten as it slams into the earth below. He hears a sound of rustling in the woods... It's either Johanna, though she'd likely be screaming insults at them, or someone here to kill them... he doesn't have the energy to lift his head at the approaching sound... not enough energy to run... of course he'd fail... of course he'd get Wiress killed with him.

It's to the sound of steady, somewhat high-pitched beeping, that Fila finally drags himself out of unconsciousness, eyes fluttering open, and then almost immediately squeezing closed again. Wherever he is, the walls, the ceiling, are all a stark, bright white that almost hurts to look at after however long he's been out for. After a moment or two, he slowly cracks one eye open ever so slightly, just a fraction in order to try and figure out where on earth he might be. What...what had happened?

The thirteen year old's brow furrows as he tries to remember. He remembers the arena, of course. Remembers the earthquakes beginning, the ground shaking, falling away, driving him and the last remaining tribute together. Hector Terce, a tall, broad eighteen year old from District Two. He remembers being pinned, the feeling of a fist colliding over and over again. Remembers putting his hand in his pocket, grabbing the mine he'd dug up...but then everything goes blank. Is he dead? Is this what this is?

Adjusted a little more, eyes slowly peek open just a little bit, head turning slowly. Though nothing radiates pain, there's a dull ache all over his body that he can't quite describe. But then he catches sight of a familiar figure at his bedside. Beetee!

"B....Beetee?"

The moment the games had been called, the victor form three had, admittedly, been in shock. Beetee hadn't accounted on Fila surviving... children that young never survived the games. Finnick Odair, the boy from 4, had been an exception but he'd had the advantage of being in an arena that played to his strength... and he was a career. Fila was not. He now feared what would be done to them for this... done to the boy... not victor won an upset without consequences. Both previous victors from District 3 had been punished for what they'd done in their own games. When he hears Fila's voice, the older man stands up, "Oh... good. You're awake." he looks him over before adding, "You'll likely be sore for some time. There was... a significant amount of work done to ensure you survived with minimal cosmetic damage."

Vulnerability and connection can be frightening, but that’s no reason to shy away from their light, to tuck yourself small into corners, to build up frigid walls to keep yourself from feeling. You will heal when you allow yourself to draw closer to the flames and thaw.

Just because you cannot see your own heart doesn’t mean that others can’t. Your heart is blinding, captivating, a fire so bright that others can’t bring themselves to look away. It illuminates the path they follow and cements you as a guiding star for their own wayward hearts. Every experience you’ve lived through has built your lighthouse heart up just a little higher. You are inspirational, a light that doesn’t go out.

Who are you without the company of others? You aren’t sure, but you know that you aren’t fond of whoever it is. You are an actor, a pretty face and a pleasant song. Many idolize you, or love you, but you can never be sure of how sincere it is. Your heart is buried under the letters they leave you, sealed with a kiss. It can’t be untangled from the red strings they’ve attached to you. You deserve to find something, someone, true and faithful to hold your heart in place. When he hears him moving around to look, he opens his eyes slightly, barely enough to really seem as if he was interested in what he was doing, but it was often a given that even if he didn't make an effort to move much, his eyes were tracking Fila in his peripheral vision. He wasn't sure exactly what had prompted Wiress to hide it... though he assumed that she could see the same thing as him when she looked at the boy... that she felt like playing the same games she did before the Capitol tore her mind apart... When he sees him find the kettle, a small smile crosses Beetee's expression. "Well... I assume your next search is for the tea bags?"

There's a certain amount of triumph in Fila's expression at finding the kettle, like this is some great accomplishment of some sort. The smile that plays on his face somehow manages to make him look even younger, a child delighted at the outcome of a game. For a moment, it could almost be pretended that the situation was vastly different, that none of them had come through the horrors that they had. Picking up the kettle, the thirteen year old returns it to its usual place, before glancing back at Beetee, noting the smile on his mentor's face.

"I imagine they might be a little bit trickier," Fila grins a little. Still, he's not going to back down from such a challenge. Slowly he moves around the compartment, studying trays of food, plates, cups, but no sign of any tea bags, at least not yet. He's not going to give up, that's for sure.

Seeing the triumph in the boy's expression made him nearly laugh... and he then does. The sound itself is airy, as if he's far from used to using it, and by the way he blinks it's clearly surprised him as well. Beetee doesn't laugh. Not by himself. Wiress makes him laugh... that had been the only thing that made him laugh was the sound of hers, the way her lips curled with her smile... he'd always assumed that his own expressions copied hers, he'd always found himself incapable of it since Ampert, and Mae, and Riven... and yet he does. "Wiress loves a challenge, doesn't she?" He says after watching him for a few more moments.

@whatsbehindthefacade (for Fila) They were adjusting... if there was any way to adjust to the fact that none of the group from District 3 managed to escape the Quarter Quell without consequences... mentally... physically... it was a nightmare of their own creation... and the consequences of their actions settled right in front of them in the refugees from 12. Their final act of cruelty against a district that had been cursed by the unintended consequences of the actions of District 3. Beetee Latier had grown accustomed to the boy sitting in the corner as he and Wiress worked in the weapons lab. He often waited for a comment... for anything of Fila seeing his mentors as what they really were. A pair of monsters who killed effectively. Who had a trail of bodies behind them, blood stains on their hands they could never wash away. Who had always been blinded by their goal that they let others take the fall for their actions. Two beasts who survived out of necessity, hurting everyone else along the way. Wiress worked beside him, humming a nonsensical song about birds trapped in a storm... Beetee's glasses went askew as he rubbed his eyes, "I believe it's meal time... you're welcome to go eat, Fila. Wiress and I are going to keep working..." There's a turn of the head that meant Wiress intended to protest, but one cold glare got her to nod with him.

District Thirteen is...different. There's a lot to get used to that he's not sure he ever will. He misses home dreadfully. District Three was hardly a paradise, but it was home and it was familiar, and in times like these, familiarity goes a long way. Routine helps, and Thirteen is certainly a stickler for routine, even if perhaps he hasn't been spending it the way they might want him to. Though he's been cleared to not have to remain stuck in the medical bay, there's not quite a niche for him that he's capable and willing to fill. So instead he perches in the corner of the lab, day in, day out, knees pulled up to his chest, occasionally twitching - the medics aren't sure if that will ever entirely go away, much to his distress. He watches, listens, considers his mentors. Considers this whole situation.

"I'm not hungry," Fila says softly. His appetite has been positively bird-like since the rescue from the Capitol, not that it had been particularly extensive before. Arms wrap a little tighter around his knees, the teenager resting his cheek against them, gaze quietly resting on the floor. Meal time is also crowded, and people stare at him, give him funny looks. It's uncomfortable. He'd rather stay right here.

"You should regardless. There won't be more until the next day cycle, if I'm not mistaken." Beetee says, his tone almost detached from his words as he speaks. He'd been far colder since they'd come to thirteen, and the momentary relief when Wiress and Fila had been rescued from the Capitol had diminished the moment they were medically cleared. The other reaches over him for a tool and he hardly reacts to the movement as he returns to what he'd been working on. Then he adds, "District 13 will likely find an assignment for you in the war effort regardless of if you agree to it. It's how these systems work." his eyes turn for a moment to Fila... the man's dark eyes are so much colder than they were before. The eyes completely devoid of any human softness, replaced by a beast that forced itself to work through the exhaustion, driven purely by the desire for this continuing nightmare to end, "I would offer you help us, but I do not believe this work would be beneficial to you."

If you put the tragedies of District 12 against the history of organized rebellion originating from the cell in District 3, you'd find a convergence in the 50th Hunger Games. While never intentional, Beetee Latier had found himself questioning exactly how many bodies trailed behind his plans...

It wasn't just Wiress, Ampert, Mae (his deceased wife), or Riven (his second child), but a history of those trapped in the crossfire of a war they'd not known was coming. Haymitch's family and his love... others who he'd convinced to help only to lead directly into the jaws of the Capitol so that he could live... the Capitol preferred he live with the guilt...

But this most recent one? Beetee Latier had a direct hand in recruiting the girl on fire... a direct hand in the series of events that led to the firebombing of District 12. It was easier to be numb to it. To chalk it off as simply a 'casualty of war'... but as he looked around, he could see the survivors from 12 clad in grey, mixed among District 13 and the straggling number of victors...

He keeps to himself, he rather prefers it now. He finds it hard to look people in the eyes, wondering what they'll see in him if he did... but today, that seems rather unavoidable. The narrow corridors are not exactly built to accommodate a wheelchair. "I am sorry to ask, but could you move a few steps to the right?" he asks, "I can't get through."

hazelle finds district thirteen a drab, dry place. she'd spent so many years of her life underground that the fact that the whole thing was beneath the surface wasn't what bothered her. no, what bothered her was the starkness of it all. the whiteness. the mines had been dirty, sure, but at least she'd come away feeling like she'd gone somewhere. district thirteen could have been anywhere. she kept thinking she'd turn a corner and see a window, hear the birds.

she's musing on this when her train of thought is interrupted. she knows of the man she's speaking to, though they've never met. she'd watched him on television for nearly her whole life.

“of course, sorry. i was just thinking,” she says, stepping aside so that beetee can get through.

He nods once, "Thank you."

Beetee carefully maneuvered himself around her, his hands steady despite every bit of trauma his body had endured in the Quarter Quell. His eyes don't lift to face the other again, but he hesitates...

What do you say when you're the direct cause of an entire group of people having their lives destroyed. When you finally face what you've become after years of fighting a system, and realize that you have no idea if what you were fighting for was real or just some fantasy that allowed you to give power to a new regime that Beetee wondered if it was any better than Panem's current system. Because in District 13, as soon as he regained lucid thought, he was back to building weapons. The same as he always did. The only difference was who was supplying the materials.

"I suppose many of us find ourselves doing that more often now? I believe the silence has something to do with that." he finally says after a few moments, his tone flat as he speaks.
