📖 : more information about their backstory or lore! For mariette
a lot of my thoughts surrounding maritte, and similar for a lot of my hunger games muses, comes from my thoughts about district four and what i want to explore through it.
for four this comes from questions about how careers work, volunteering and the impact of the 25th games.
to me, four is a district where training and volunteering comes from the sense of community and duty. you know every year you are going to lose two children, the only thing you can do to stop this is bring one home.
so you train some of your children, give them better odds, teach them to defend others, especially those weaker or younger than themselves.
of course, to do this, you have to forget a little bit that they also were once younger and weaker. maritte is raised in a community home, losing her parents young, and is taught that to pay back the district that fed, clothed and raised her, it is her duty to take on the games in place of another. not just to protect them but also so that when (if) she wins she has the means to support herself and others.
