It's a double edged sword being the gifted kid. Phoebe loved Pokemon just like everybody else in her class, her dreams of becoming a pokemon researcher were starting to bear fruit when she was finally old enough to get a license. Of course, she was hoping to get the most optimal partner for her journey, but when she heard there was a pokemon that no one else wanted, she took them on immediately, convinced that training them would come as easily as school work did for her. She was wrong.

Unlike most kids, but like most adults, Helga saw the capture of pokemon as an overly publicized blood sport and refused to take part even after Big Bob bought her a pokemon licence. In truth, part of her reluctance was due to her sister Olga being a state wide contest champion. That was until a certain football-headed boy made it clear he would participate in the pokemon league, then it was a rush to get a powerhouse water starter to compete against his fire type. She ended up with sobble.

Gerald assumed he would be getting a pokemon partner from the professor's lab like everybody else. But that costs money, so his dad took the liberty to help him catch one with his old partner. Gerald caught Trapinch by accident, which is a good pokemon if you already have a few badges, but Gerald doesn't so the little guy is basically a wild animal who doesn't listen.
