Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
I hate the clingy incestous little sister Archetype so much in anime because nothings ever done with it outside of it being a male gaze fetish. Like wow ok the 50th little sister competing and hating with the other female cast while the older brother is uncomfortable and plays dumb and just HAPPENS to accidently be in situations where he sexualizes her. Im sure it'll do something the next 50 times I see it.
But one of my favorite characters of all time is Nanami Kiryuu. The concept of a girl who idolizes her brother and does the whole clingy incestous little sister song and dance, not nessicarily because shes incestously attracted to him but because she feels like if it wasnt for her connection to him no one would love her the way that they love him.
And them being blood related siblings is the only reason that not only everyone loves her, but her own brother loves her too. Like she genuinely feels she is so worthless and unlovable on her own merit that she needs to cling to touga for people to care about her. Like you would think in a situation where its revealed two characters like this are adoptive siblings nanami would be overjoyed so she can be with toga. But she isnt. Shes angry and distraught and in denial that that is her blood relative.
And then she is presented the opportunity to have sex with (and i say this loosely RGU clearly plays what happens as implied assault) touga she backs away in disguist because. Shes not attracted to him. She just wants someone who is guaranteed to love her no matter what. And your family is supposed to. Because thats your blood. They are the only people who are guaranteed to love no matter what. They should anyway. And she sees those lines blurred in real time by touga and thats not what she wants. She just wants him to care about her.
It breaks my heart to think about it.

God asked Cain
Where his brother was
(Even as his blood spilled and cried out)
Cain replied,
“Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Christ, hanging from the cross,
As His blood spilled
Saving us, ushering us
To God’s divine embrace
Saying, in reply,
(Am I my brother’s keeper?)
“I Am. I Am. I Am.”
*turns my attention inwards* mmmmm. no *turns my attention back outwards* oh god
turn your attention to The Character
i think the crux of human misery stems from the fact that our skeleton just wants to sit around and accumulate dust in an ancient barrow (that is the innate imperative of all skeletal remains in-case you didn’t know) but our meat has its own agenda which creates this fundamental conflict of interests

we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write gen fics. we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write character studies and stories with no focus on romance or sex. we have to get on our knees and thank the brave soldiers in fandom who write about minor characters and friendship and family with no focus on romance or sex. i know it’s hard to care about characters in a world that seems to only revolve around ships but i see you. and i love you
I think the most Biblical part of PHM, outside of the fact that a vessel named after the Virgin Mary carries a man named Grace whose job is to save the world, is the theme of the well-known verse "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). Because, yeah, that's what the Hail Mary mission is about. Being willing to lay down your life for the rest of humanity. And it's something that Grace struggles with throughout the story.
I think it's important to note that for most of the story, Grace doesn't have a choice. He's initially snatched up by Stratt and NASA against his will and made to work on a problem he didn't volunteer to work on, even though the work is enjoyable to him. After he's kicked out, he does go back willingly because he cares about his students (there's a hint of the theme there), but even then Stratt puts him in more positions he didn't ask or volunteer for, takes his DNA to test it without asking, drafts him as the backup microbiologist without telling him, and finally sedates and drugs him against his will to get him on the mission. It's the only thing that can save Earth, of course, but it's important to note thematically that this wasn't Grace's choice.
Furthermore, Grace doesn't think much of himself. Even while under the assumption that he did volunteer, he doesn't believe he's truly brave, or that he belongs on the mission, or that he's even that important of a person. He struggles with inferiority and shortcomings. He is a coward. He's lonely. He doesn't have really any friends back home, no significant other, and we don't ever hear anything about his family.
And then he meets Rocky.
Rocky does it. He is willing to lay down his life for his friend, and very nearly does. It's only after that happens that Grace is able to willingly sacrifice himself, too. Which calls to mind another passage: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us" (1 John 4:18-19).
Grace is able to show his love for Rocky by laying down his life because Rocky did it first. And it's not only because Grace loves Rocky (which is true and important), but because Grace knows he is loved by Rocky. Because of that, he's able to shed his cowardice and self-pity and the mantle of inferiority he's been clinging to and throw himself at the mercy of space for the chance of saving his best friend. He goes willingly, out of love, because of love. And I think there is no more beautiful representation of the kind of love Jesus showed towards us, and the kind of love He wishes us to show towards others.
When you understand that you are loved, it changes your life. It changes your perspective. It changes your motivation. You'll find yourself doing things you never thought you'd do for people you never though you'd do them for. You'll find yourself lost out in the middle of nowhere just to save one soul. And you'll do everything with a smile on your face and a strength in your heart because you are loved.
You'll even rejoice in death.
This moment makes me Unwell. Imagine being traumatized by oxygen. As in, the thing your friend actively needs in order to live. It is highly flammable and very dangerous, you experienced how dangerous it is, and it is everywhere on this ship. There might be a leak at any moment and everything will explode and you will die and your friend will die and your worlds will die and—!!
Imagine how paranoid Rocky was during the first few days after the Adrian incident. Imagine how many times he inspected the ship to make sure that nothing is going to explode. Imagine how frustrated he was because he is restricted by his ball and his tunnels and he can't actually interact with the ship and Grace just doesn't understand the danger (and is not that good at fixing things anyway).
Even worse, imagine Grace needing an oxygen mask after the "fishing trip" (or for whatever reason during the journey). This is much more concentrated amount of this dangerous dangerous dangerous thing. And it's actively keeping your friend alive. And it's terrifying.
This rock needs so many hugs (or whatever counts as the eridian equivalent of hugs), I'm not even joking.
i had to
I see your “Rocky swears like a sailor but only in pitches humans can’t hear/refuses to teach Grace what those words mean” and raise you “Rocky swears like a sailor and now has to explain to Grace that ‘bad bad bad’ isn’t actually a sequence you play on your Eridian speech piano in polite company.”
Grace is both horrified and amused to realise that a more accurate translation for what Rocky’s been saying is “shit shit shit”.
Eridian government representative: Greetings Rocky, Saviour of Erid, and Grace, Saviour from Beyond the Stars. We are pleased to welcome you home.
Grace, haltingly on the keyboard Rocky built for him: Wassup bitches. Fucking jazzed to—
Rocky: GRACE STOP TALKING NOW NOW NOW I EXPLAIN LATER
something i really liked about project hail mary is that Rocky and Grace are both equally out of their depth and about as competent as the other. theyre both the smart one. theyre both total dumbasses. neither knows whats going on. they both think the other is an idiot baby. they both admire the other's intelligence so much.
"Grace Ryland is Rocky's dog" is such a funny fucking dynamic when you think about it
Eridians are further behind than humans technologically right? They dont have computers, relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. In fact, Eridians probably dont even know about the Big Bang because their atmosphere would filter out most of the cosmic microwave background radiation we use to detect it. On a human timeline, theyre anywhere between like early-mid 20th century. Rocky's basically a cosmonaut.
So the human civilization is pretty advanced from Rocky's perspective. Rationally he understands this. On a conceptual level he knows this to be true.
But at the same time... imagine youre one of the first ever cosmonauts to make it into space. Then you meet a 10 year old alien dog who cant do 2+2 without pulling out its calculator. It forgets everything constantly and has to keep notes everywhere, like it basically lives in Memento (2000). Also if it doesnt nap constantly it gets even stupider. And you somehow has to reconcile this with the fact that this dog has a better understanding of physics than your entire civilization does. Like the dog knows how the universe started.
This isnt better from Grace's perspective btw. Eridians never developed computers, so all their ship systems are steered using basically the manual labor of 24 Eridians. Also theres no radiation shielding on their ship. Actually im pretty sure half the reason why Rocky is always busy fixing shit is because the radiation keeps frying all the onboard electronics, so hes always building and fixing and replacing components
Like imagine being a modern day sailor navigating the Pacific with GPS and strong hulls to protect against the raging ocean. And from portside you see like an honest to god viking ship. Except its made of some high tech carbon fiber material. But like, its still very definitely a viking ship. You can clearly see there's 24 oars along the hull where sailors are supposed to use to manually row their ship. Also the ship is leaking and theres like one little dude on board whos skittering around patching the holes constantly. Also this little dude is blind and doesnt know about water. Thats how insane Eridians look being an interstellar species without computers or radiation shielding.
Both of them thinks the other one is the completely ridiculous and absurd one and theyre both totally amazed at how far the other has come in spite of it
I’ve seen some discussion of the Christian symbolism of Grace’s name, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone talk about the Christian symbolism of Rocky’s name.
In the Christian tradition, “Peter” was not St. Peter’s original name. Jesus gave him that name to symbolize the role he was meant to play in the Church. It means “rock.” If you wanted to translate the original Greek name into English, “Rocky” would capture it pretty well.
Imagine you’re alone in space for decades desperately trying to find a way to save your planet, then an alien shows up, calls you by the name that God gave to His best friend in his culture’s most prominent religion, and proceeds to save both your species.
In conclusion, Ryland Grace is not beating the Space Jesus allegations.
