end-of-the-school-year class photo! (do eridians get summer vacation?)
been thinking about grace and adrian being alike
Ugh the scene where Grace tests the theory on the taomeoba to see if it’ll kill the astrophage and it works but instead of celebrating, he starts crying and is visibly distressed gets me every single time.
Like that’s such a loaded way to feel bcus yes he was able to figure out how to kill the astrophage, yes he was in fact the man for the job, yes they were right to send him.
But!! It’s that, mixed with the fact that the guy who even helped him get to this step is still unconcious or dead for all he knows!! And he has no way of knowing how to get this to the other planet it needs to go to if its the latter!!
Ryan Gosling, the actor that you are!!!
continuing traditions
I love Rocktiz, but I can't draw him with human Grace because I'm just too attached to the interspecie bond between Grace and Rocky. It's the soul of the movie and its so beautiful.
The human Rocky AU and eridian Grace AU down there, since i really liked the linearts its a shame they're so hidden
I feel like the biome dome should end right at the edge of Grace's bedroom. You cannot tell me rocky watched grace sleep for years waiting for him to wake up, and then was like "yeah sure, here's you're private house where you'll sleep alone".
My rock baby would go fucking mental until Adrian caved and went "here's our new house, half eridian, half Dome, our bedrooms are adjacent so you can sleep with your head right next to grace"
Might just be because I primarily use Tumblr and they're well known but. It's kinda interesting that in fics that discuss Grace struggling with touch starvation/skin hunger he doesn't explain to Rocky like, how important skin contact and embraces are? Not just to humans but most mammals.
Specifically referencing the whole Cloth Mother vs Wire Mother experiment? And how we know for a fact that actual human babies can sometimes straight up die just because they're not held, even if they're warm and fed (part of why parents are encouraged to interact with baby even if they're in the medically necessary incubator).
Because in most stories it's left as a vague "this is necessary for humans mental health" without actually explaining how important it is? And not just on the aspect of feeling lonely. But also, you're more stressed, and it fucks with your sleep schedule/ability to sleep (which Rocky would find hella upsetting), and you're more likely to engage in self harming behaviors.
So I think bringing up the well-known (on Tumblr) experiment of Cloth Mother and Wire Mother as like, "hey touch is such an integral part of mammalian species in general, and humans/monkeys more specifically to where babies would choose to starve as long as they felt comforted. So this is a big issue for me, especially since my most recent conscious contact with other humans was either when I was being chased down and drugged against my will, or when I was carrying my fellows dead bodies out to the airlock."
I’ve just been thinking about all the ways Grace and Rocky would try to cook up taumoeba on their way to erid!
I hope you enjoy, and have an AWESOME day!!!
saw a lady wearing this shirt at my workplace and thought it was so stupid. i couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Something something @stick-eridian-collection if you don't already got this one
Tfw you forget there's term for it, on account of the amnesia
Happy pride!
So Rocky has a bunch of permanent carvings along his carapace like family crest, rulers and protractors, marriage symbol, etc. I assume thats normal for Eridians, but the possibility that it's socially equivalent to getting full body tattoos for humans is funny. Imagine seeing this super inked out dude, but you look closer and its just a bunch of tattoos like.
"I LOVE MY HUSBAND," "FAMILY MAN," "ENGINEERING4LYFE."
Baby eridians, for a good portion of their lives, are soft-shelled, as Erid likes to call it. It takes a few molts (more than a few, but for abbreviation's sake) for their shells to entirely harden, absorbing minerals from around them and through their food to develop the shell on their exterior. If you need a comparison, consider how human bones fuse and we become less flexible as we get older.
But for a few years (cough, decades, cough), a baby pebble is about as hard as a soft-shelled turtle—or a normal turtle, if they're a bit older. Disadvantages aside, there is an advantage to being able to see your offspring's internal functions. And until their vocal bladders form and they're capable of making multiple complex sounds, being able to see what is hurting is absolutely helpful.
It's a universal experience among parents to lament the day they can no longer hear their pebbles' heartbeats.
That is to say, Rocky knows Grace is an adult, okay? He isn't someone who anthropomorphizes, and he isn't going to start now. Statement.
But when he first heard Grace in all his squishy glory— heart pumping away, lungs filling and deflating, organs digesting food— his brain went full baby-fever mode. Frankly, he was white-knuckling the urge to find the nearest hypothetical cave, bundle him up into a proper nest, and wait for his skin to absorb the surrounding minerals and start hardening properly.
But because Rocky is sensible and proper and not going to infantilize his best friend (he swears to God, stupid fucking instincts, shut the fuck up!!), he won't.
But sometimes the urge to squish his best friend is overwhelming. He just pinches at him through the permeable mesh of his ball. And Grace will screw up his face (so soft) and go what’s up bud? I piss you off or something? (He learns what bruises are and sulks for half a day afterward.)
All of that aside, once again, Rocky has gotten used to Grace's heartbeat, his clumsiness, and his one-tone voice. That's his best friend, and he's smart and just as capable as any other adult. He is also the cutest fucking thing to Eridian hearing. Is he also disconcertingly alien, definitely— His size, the limbs, the head protrusion (and other protrusions), the leakiness detracted maybe. But his cluster-sibling once cooed at and brought home a pet sulphur slug because, oh my spirits, hear his squishy respiratory system and you tell me that's not the cutest thing on the planet! It blurbles, Rocky! It fucking blurbles!
So, as Erid draws closer and Rocky/Grace become more excited and stressed. (The food has yet to run out, and as good as Erid is, they need substantial help from the human side to figure out how to make proper human nutrition. And finding the right informational packs in all of human knowledge is a very big undertaking.)
Rocky dreads the ever-looming talk he’ll need to have with Grace about the fact that Erid may, in fact, possibly find him very, very adorable. And that this might hamper communication for a second while he explains no, that is not a tall baby and no you cannot squish it.
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be a part of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
I have cry, and never have felt better after. I don’t think I have ever found a movie that feel so much like a blanquet, so sweet and cozy, and so full of love
I know it’s just a popular misconception in this fandom that Grace runs out of food on the way to Erid, where in the book he actually runs out a few months after arriving and it just takes the Eridians a while to make him more that he can actually eat. And honestly idgaf but consider how much more angst potential it is that Grace arrives to Erid healthy and has a chance to explain what happened with Rocky and befriend a bunch of other Eridians, and then starts to decline in health.
Instead of Rocky having to convince Erid to save the life of a random alien they don’t know anything about, it’s suddenly a scramble for Erid to save their new friend (and savior of their planet) and watching him slowly get worse while they struggle to make progress sucks for everyone who has gotten to know him, not just Rocky.
I love the headcanons that are like ‘the eridians already figured out how to replicate earth’s atmosphere, temperature, food, light, the ocean for the human. ofc they found a way to extend grace’s life expectancy’ bc talk about my exact brand of cope. but I also think another motivating factor could have been no one wanting to deal w 400 years of rocky in a bad mood
i don't think we can really comprehend what rocky went through. his star is dying, his planet is cooling—something that is directly deadly to his people. they build a ship to travel the stars, everything is going well, they have hope! except... things are going much faster than they planned for. it's strange. and his crew mates, they're slowing down. they're getting tired faster, sleeping longer, working less. they don't wake up. he can hear their worker cells stop moving, their colonies die. not slowly or one by one, but in staggered groups. their pilot, their craftsman, their navigator. more and more, until it's just rocky. tau ceti is right there, staring at them, the petrova line in their grasp, but rocky. rocky is an engineer. rocky is an engineer, his job is to make sure the ship stays up and running. so he does that and he does that and he does that and he does—nothing. he cannot save his planet. he can't go home empty handed either. he is stuck in limbo with the corpses of his crew and no idea why they died. no idea why he didn't die. alone, alone, alone, your planet is dying you are useless. until—a ship.
