I painted this mostly on a Greyhound bus on the way home, so its a lot looser than my usual work. I couldn't do exact lines with the movement of the bus shaking me around, so I had to go with the flow.

Coyote Dances Their Blues Away

Painted while thinking about how music is medicine, how it can express and exorcise our grief even if we’re not the ones playing or singing it.

On Saturday, there was an ecstatic dance at my shop. This isn’t unusual, we host one every month. But I really noticed the difference in vibe between before I danced and after, how much lighter I felt. Then, Sunday I played an intimate little show about grief to a crowd of about 10 punks at a pavilion on a beach, and once again reflected on the power of music to heal.

I don’t have some cosmic truth or anything to share. Just that music is good and I’m glad it exists.

Quick sketchy ref sheet of my Fallout New Vegas courier OC, Sixto, and his Coyote/Legion mongrel companion Mezcalita! Sixto is a former NCR Ranger, hence the outfit.

Quick backstory: no longer a ranger after being injured in the Battle of Hoover Dam. Stole Mezcalita from a Legion camp when she was a pup because he didn’t have the heart to kill her. Name might not in fact be Sixto, that’s what he calls himself after becoming the infamous Courier Six.

I spent the rainy afternoon doing some watercolor painting with my father-in-law. It was nice to do something chill and meditative after going to the No Kings protest this morning. It was a good protest, no violence, minimal heckling, lots of friends; but still, tiring and overstimulating.

The other day while we were driving home at night, my wife and I saw a vixen run across the street carrying her kit in her mouth. I’ve had foxes on the brain since then. It’s always so exciting to see our wild neighbors.
