oliver: if you could change one thing about your father, what would it be?

the boy groans, these questions are everything he doesn’t want to deal with right now. yet, he can’t seem to stop himself from answering them.  ❝  one thing? maybe that he’d be more reliable? being there a little more, ya’ know? no ending up in jail every other week, or getting too drunk every other day or going on yet another obsessive chase. ‘m just hoping that he can sort himself out now that we’re here. he has a proper job and a house, he doesn’t need to be the big bad pirate anymore. m’not keeping my hopes up, though. he is who he is and i’m gonna love him either way.  ❞

what’s something you’re afraid to tell your parents? (gus)

he has to think, tapping his chin simply for dramatics. there’s plenty that he wouldn’t want to tell his parents, but that much that he’d be afraid to tell them. maybe all the times his mother had told him he could always come to her with anything had stuck. hm. who would have thought?  ❝  i got it. i’m afraid to tell them i was the one almost burned down the solar. i know i said a raccoon must have gotten inside and knocked down a candle, but it was just me. sorry? but, hey, the whole place is gone now anyway.  ❞

oliver how do you really feel about your father?

 ❝  fuckin’ frustrated,  ❞  he laughs, drily and tiredly.  ❝  he can be a prick sometimes, yeah? but he’s my father and i love him and ‘course i want him to notice me and be proud and all that shit that sounds ridiculous right now.  ❞  even under the spell, the words have to be dragged out.  ❝  s’nothing, though. ‘cause, there’s nothing i can do that can make that happen. believe me, i’ve fuckin’ tried.  ❞  clearly not enough. a shake of his head, hints of the self-criticism that follows everything he does. everything he says.  ❝  ya can’t change people, no matter how much ya want. and sometimes they just can’t give ya what you want,  ❞  he shrugs finally, content in sipping his drink.

❛ ◈    ELLA WALKED ALONG THE DESSERT TABLE, her hands clasped behind her back as she eyed all of the decadent treats that were arranged so beautifully. only appetizers had been served so far, dessert was far off. but the more ella saw, the more she wanted. when she stumbled upon a display that simply looked too tasty to resist she bit down on her lip. subtly, ella glanced around. once she thought the coast was clear, a clean finger swiped along the back of it and was quickly brought to her mouth. along with it came a cheeky grin. 

     the young laurent heir had been making the rounds, walking around with all of his natural confidence, eyes settling on the gala’s host just as the queen eyed the dessert table.  ❝  i totally saw that,  ❞  he voices, standing next to the woman, all tease.  ❝  your majesty,  ❞  he then greets the woman, nodding respectfully.  ❝  i might be inclined to keep your secret if you let me join the dessert tasting.  ❞

     nothing about the situation made oliver feel comfortable. not the luxury of it all, not all the people ( most of whom probably thought the worst of him and his family ), and certainly not the clothes he had been encouraged to use. he was truly starting to wonder why he was still there when the male approached.  ❝  look, mate, sorry about your mom and all, but s’not gonna happen.  ❞  no, he was not about to add dancing to his night.  ❝  i’m doing’ your feet a favor.  ❞

“hey – to be honest, i’m just proud of myself right now,” clover does a little fist bump into the open air, turning to grin at the person standing beside her. “i’ve gone like…an hour without tripping over my own two feet, and that’s one heck of an accomplishment.”

     augustin turned to his friend, grinning wide. he knew well enough how much of an achievement that was. how many times had he been a witness to the girl’s clumsiness?  ❝  i’m proud of you too, clo. this has to be a record, is it not?  ❞  he’s teasing, even if his words are probably true.  ❝  could i interest you in a wager?  ❞  he asks playfully before bringing his flute up for a sip.

            ❝   she’s been in wonderland.   ❞   james tells his son,  taking note of his almost annoyed sigh upon hearing of he and wesley’s first fight since the curse hit.   he knew how much his youngest child hated to see him and his siblings fight,  but with wesley being civil wasn’t an option,  it was a miracle.    ❝   she’s still getting used to things,  so take it easy on her,  okay ?   her mind’s still warped from that wicked hell realm.   ❞   james explains,  a sigh escaping him as well when he realizes how he could’ve done a much better job at protecting her.   but he didn’t need to remind himself of his failures as a parent,  wes already did that for him.    ❝   why,  think your father has lost it in his old age ?   ❞

     woderland, the odd real known to  trick people into its world. that explained why they couldn’t find her. one didn’t simply walk in there without the realm’s own calling.  ❝  yeah,  ❞  he nods, not entirely paying attention to his father’s exact words. his mind is still wrapping itself around what he had just been told. his sister was back. his sister was back. the joy he felt didn’t erase his worries, though. he knew she wouldn't be the same, ireland had spent too long in wonderland not to have changed.  ❝  ya think she’s coming back to us?  ❞  his eyes search his father’s, looking for a confirmation that he usually didn’t. his father was anything but reliable, but somehow -- for this -- he needed his father to convince him things would be okay.  ❝  not even the great captain hook can win the fight against time,  ❞  he shrugs as a way of answering, brims curving slightly into a smirk.

      ❝ all doors talk, ❞ ireland says. her tone is void of any emotion, she states it as though it is fact ( in her defense, in wonderland, they do ). ❝ but not all people listen. ❞ she doesn’t notice that gus’ original reaction was meant to be playful. she continues to try to open the door until his theory reaches her ears. finally, ireland glances behind her and her eyes settle on the prince. ❝ she had to have done it on purpose.. they can’t very well lock on their own. ❞

     augustin just looked at the girl,  corner of his mouth curling even as he tried to hold back laughter. the girl spoke with such seriousness, she couldn’t be joking.  ❝  okay,  ❞  he replied slowly, choosing not to point out that that most certainly wasn’t the truth and that he had the many doors in his parents’ palace as proof. if anyone, it made the prince curious to know what land she was from where magic was so prominent.  ❝  we could be on something here. librarians could be the new evil witches,  ❞  he quips, words yet again said in nothing more than jest.  ❝  what’s got you so desperate to leave?  ❞

     oliver pushes away his tablet, tired sigh escaping as blue hues set on the man. of course, it had taken less than a week for his brother and father to get into one of their arguments.  ❝  i don’t want ya to ⏤  ❞  he wants to tell james that that’s not what he wants, distance from his father has never been what he wanted, but there’s no time. james is speaking again ⏤ probably isn’t that interested in what he was to say anyway ⏤, and everything stops. he’s silent for a moment, unable to put into words what he’s thinking. what he’s feeling.  ❝  what do you mean? that- that’s not possible.  ❞  his sister was the only thing that could put a halt ( even if momentary ) to his father's obsession with pan, they had looked for her everywhere, he knew james wouldn’t lie about this, but it was still so hard to believe.  ❝  are you sure?  ❞

              kalei was taking advantage of the weather because apparently there are more than two seasons in this state. he wasn’t sure how he was going to adapt to the weather given that he never really wore pants or even sweaters. he was going to need some time to adjust, but apparently fall was approaching and he needed to get in some of the last surfs before the water became incredibly cold. it felt like he had spent the entire day there, no shirt just swim shorts and some flip flops eating a sandwich on the floor. he wasn’t much of a sharer, but eventually his aunt taught him it was the way to go even if his mother was a little stubborn admitting she was right. he looked up at the person next to him as he muttered, “want a piece?”

     the trek from the town center  to the coast wasn’t the shortest one, but it certainly wasn’t long enough to stop the young man from finding his way to the coast daily. he would have missed it too much otherwise. he sat on the clear sand, finding comfort in the way the grains swallowed his feet, eyes lost in the horizon as he just drew. oliver knew no sea was the same and he had yet to commit this one to memory. he hadn’t paid much attention to the other boy, but the question caught his attention. hues shifted from the male to the food and then back.  ❝  no, mate. i’m a'ight. -- what was that you were doin' in there?  ❞  he nodded toward the water. he might not have paid attention once the lad had joined him on the shore, but not while he had been in there.
