A mix of highs and lows in 2016. Here’s to sweeter days and creativity aplenty in 2017.
Red bikes galore at the Gramercy Park Hotel.
Incontestably, alas, most people are not, in action, worth very much; and yet, every human being is an unprecedented miracle. One tries to treat them as the miracles they are, while trying to protect oneself against the disasters they’ve become.
James Baldwin
Our too-young and too-new America, lusty because it is lonely, aggressive because it is afraid, insists upon seeing the world in terms of good and bad, the holy and the evil, the high and the low, the white and the black; our America is frightened of fact, of history, of processes, of necessity. It hugs the easy way of damning those whom it cannot understand, of excluding those who look different, and it salves its conscience with a self-draped cloak of righteousness.
Richard Wright, author
This interview was in 1999. What he is saying is even more relevant today. By the way, Prince is referring to the murder of James Byrd Jr. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_James_Byrd_Jr.
This is to all the people, in every comments section, in every household, and workplace, constantly trying to defend their privilege by acting like racism doesn’t exist. Nothing changes unless we acknowledge it and have open and honest dialogues about the changes that need to be made. Until then all lives will never matter. Our hearts go out to the families of #altonsterling 🙏🏾 #philandocastile 🙏🏾 #blacklivesmatter
How it’s done.
Bill Cunningham from Hilton Als’ view:
Photographers do not lie. They discriminate against a world that offers too much at once by fixing on that which intrigues or amuses them—mysteries they cannot solve in a glance. I think Cunningham was interested in women and black culture in particular because those are two cultural mysteries that offer layer after layer of emotional and historical complications that could never be solved in a photograph.
Read Als “Bill Cunningham Saw Us All”. Cunningham - a street photographer legend and documentarian - he inspired so many of us to capture street styles. Clothes tell stories too. Cunningham died on June 25.
Summer reads and rereads.
