@turntechgodsmack ==> Answer a call from Dave's school.
Dave listened, gaining a feeling of shame. He felt that Bro was disappointed in him for hiding it. He’d thought he was doing the right thing by not telling Bro, letting him think Dave could handle himself. But he’d let it get to a point where a teacher called Bro… Oh, he definitely felt ashamed now.
He couldn’t think of an answer for a moment. His mouth opened a bit but closed due to lack of words. He’d only wanted to have Bro see he wasn’t a child and he didn’t need Bro’s supervision 24/7, but he hadn’t intended the backfire.
"…But it’s not that big of a deal." Still trying to get out of the situation by lying? Dave felt pathetic. He averted his gaze to the table and thought for a moment. As much as he ignored what those kids said, he had to admit that sometimes he thought about it. It did affect him a bit. And now he was beginning to feel like those kids were right, because he’d disappointed Bro.
He didn’t say anything for a couple of minutes. He didn’t know what to say. He knew he should just own up and come clean and say that yeah, those kids were dicks and that ignoring for this long only made it all get worse and worse but he didn’t want Bro to see him like some…kid. Even if he was technically a kid, he didn’t want Bro to see him that way.
"It wouldn’t have mattered if I’d told you anyways because they’d still do it. Their dicks and ignoring it makes it better." Shrugging, he slumped a bit in his chair, never bringing his eyes back up to meet with Bro’s. "What’re you gonna do about it anyways? It’s fine. I can handle shit on my own, you know. You raised me that way. I didn’t do anything because it’s not a big deal."
The lies just kept coming. He couldn’t stop himself from lying to Bro and more and more shame just came through from it. He was only making this all worse, but he didn’t want to admit he needed Bro for this, he wanted to be as cool as Bro. He wanted to walk around with a ‘I don’t care’ attitude. But he failed.
"You don't need to lie to me, Dave."
Dave's behavior and reactions were so similar to how Bro would have reacted it was almost frightening. Bro felt a pang of guilt at having raised his little brother to be so engrossed with keeping cool that he would keep something like this under wraps. He knew that raising him in this way was for the best, but it was obvious these kids had the ability to get under Dave's skin, and even since the younger Strider was just a child, Bro had always been there to stick up for him. Dave would always get embarrassed, and Bro didn't blame him--but there were times when Bro actually had to be a brother to him, and this was undoubtedly one of those times. "I know it's more than you're going on about, and don't try to convince me I can't do anything. You're just deceiving yourself; both of us know I can manipulate anyone I want to and can kick ass even better."
He sighed and stood, motioning for Dave to come over. "Look, lil man--for the sake of your pride, because I know that's what's going on--once this is taken care of, I won't talk about it if that's what you want. But I'm still the Bro you know, and I'm not standing for this shit.
"Besides," he continued, with a reassuring smirk. "Don't tell me you wouldn't enjoy seeing those kids get their asses handed to them, because I sure as hell would."
