it’s rare that i sleep in the daytime. but you looked so inviting this afternoon. i couldn’t stop myself from dozing off for a while. as i was drifting in another world, i felt myself being drawn out. you called my name, and suddenly i was back. i answered, eyes closed. you said, “blunt,” and that was all i ever needed to hear.

when i was eight, i never liked to finish a meal. my mother would beg and beg, holding the spoon to my lips. “one more,” she pleaded, and i would wait to see if she stopped. she would always try to get another in if i took it, and i was always skeptical. one more was never one more.

when i was eighteen, i still left things unfinished. you and i were a work in progress. before you left for the west coast and i for the east, you came to say goodbye. and it was so hard to let you go. “one more,” you kept saying. a kiss turned into another, and another. this time, i didn’t hesitate.

these nights will get so cold it hurts

empty hours

they always ask, “what is it like?” and i have to say it doesn’t translate into any words you could possibly understand. still, i try. i tell them it’s like the best substance you could abuse. every moment is a fucking gorgeous lucid dream. but you know you have to wake up. and you dread the day the world loses its instagram filter, leaving behind vivid shades of gray. every moment not spent with those you love or climbing on rooftops is a fucking disgrace. how dare you waste these gossamer nights trapped between the walls you see every day. you could be sleeping with someone new or reaching for the goddamn stars. stop that. stop wasting life away. it becomes a fear rooted in the mind but branching to every extremity. these empty hours are lost forever. the restlessness blossoms and you’re ready to fucking <i>go</i>. but then you remember it’s a monday night and all the adventures are asleep. monday nights bleed into tuesday mornings, and all you can do is wonder how you let those hours escape when they were right there in yours hands, ready for be yours forever. you could have held on tightly, marking them with the stolen t-shirt or your greatest mistake. at least you’d remember, then.

are you awake?

often times it’s too late for the exceptional

i find myself craving beautiful moments

that only exist in your lovely, lovely mind

as you spend the night wrapped up in another’s arms

i’m stuck out in the rain in the dead of night

and suddenly the whole world is in sepia

a washed out version of the nights we could have had

after this glimpse of a more vivid reality

i wonder if i could ever reach that eternity i once saw

so i’ll find myself wondering, “are you awake?”
