It looks like my boyfriend’s Mom is dying so I’m taking a rush trip to see him and help him get ready for his trip. He just keeps apologizing for missing my birthday and how this was supposed to be the weekend we celebrated my birthday and he’s so sorry he’s so sorry, and I’m just trying to talk him down because obviously my birthday is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS IMPORTANT than him being able to see his mom for a last time, but I just can’t get him to calm down and stop beating himself up. Hopefully my physical presence will help?

He’s frazzled and this is a rough, rushed trip, so I made him a pre trip checklist? Maybe that will help?

Thinking about something Fella told me the other week. We were out at a dinner, and I’ve felt for a while that post-Covid my social skills have taken a hit, so I made a point to try to chat with the people who shared our table.

Afterward he said “I always love watching you and my brother just build rapport with people. I can be charming but it takes more effort, and I’m thinking through the steps. But I love watching you go and just find the smallest ways to connect with people.”

I think he can stay.

The funniest thing about my boyfriend is that for an incredibly smart person (easily makes me look like a total dunce) he can be astoundingly oblivious. When he and his ex wife were on like two years of dating and he was maybe early thirties she took him to the revival of Company and he had NO idea why this story made me start cackling.

My only serious ex was of Indian extraction (not American, also not Indian in terms of nationality) and he was a real steaming piece of shit but I still thank God every day that he didn’t end up in the US with current politics and also the MAGA bits of my extended family.

Summer plans:

Make cherry bounce from Martha Washington’s recipe.

Consistently write 1000 words a day, get through The Artist’s Way, keep step count up.

Find well paid and ideally flexible/remote job with limited admin where I can stay head down and write.

ETA: ERADICATE THESE MOTHERFUCKING CLOTHES MOTHS.

No concrete plans to wed at this point but that didn’t stop me from sobbing to “Make Our Garden Grow” from Candide and resolving that it will be involved in my eventual, doubtless very small, wedding.
