As the man and dog eased off, Michael breathed a sigh of relief, backing away from the two with his back in hand. The words hurt, but he was off clean conscious, having done nothing to harm the men and their companions. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he muttered, putting distance between him and his assailants. His eyes darted to the ongoing fight between Arctic and the other man. He wanted to step in, but was just a bit out of breath from his own dodgework, and didn't want to show any sign of violence now. If he was lucky, he could help with the wounds the man sustained.

Michael's attention was now taken from the teammates he had gathered - now, it was trying to get them to calm down, all of them, dog and human alike. He thought about it as he dodged, missing yet another lunge from the canine and master set. If he spoke quietly enough, but just loud enough to be heard, maybe he could show good intent. He didn't have time to write, nor to sign. "Please!" His voice was a kind of excited whisper, perhaps just a little bit above, barely heard but audible at least. "Please stop! I don't want to fight you. I don't want to hurt you!"

Trend, Natural, End

Trend: You know those blongs of really well-dressed guys in button-downs and suits and just generally looking sharp? He wants to be one of those guys. He is halfway there.

Natural: I literally don't know how to take this question but. One of the reasons his hair is so long is because he wants to see how long it would get before it stops growing. He's curious to see if his hair has a length limit and ngl it's probably gonna grow for a hell of a long time.

End: This hasn't happened yet but it will eventually. But.

Whenever someone dies in the hospital under Michael's care, he's going to be wrecked. So far he's been... fairly distanced from actual experience with death? The plague thing is also happening and he is not going to deal well with watching people die. Good luck kid.

Nightmares, Love, Waiting

Nightmares: Admittedly, Michael has very few nightmares. He barely even dreams. There isn't really much for him to have nightmares about and he's pretty grateful.

Love: Hahahaha he's on the 'shitty romantic history' train. In highschool he had one crush who was already taken, and even after she broke up with her boyfriend he couldn't bring himself to say anything. In college he was friends with a guy who helped him cover up the powers thing and there was something vaguely mutually crushy there but after Michael got expelled they stopped talking, and now he's in love with a married woman but knows not to say anything.

Sure knows how to pick them huh!

Waiting: He's a pretty patient person! Very few things make him lose his temper and waiting, be it in line or something else, isn't a problem for him. His patience and self-control is through the roof.

First dogs, not men. But it could be said that in this situation the two were not that different. Both seemed equally ravenous to Michael as he made another dodge, just barely missing the dog that jumped at him. While his 'teammates' had been far more violent than he thought necessary, he wasn't going to bring any harm - it was not in the job description. And besides, proving to these people that at least one of them means both good and business might be their shot. He would scold the other two later. The urge to yell rose inside Michael, but he ignored it, not going to break his silence in an unnecessary circumstance. If he could dodge the canines long enough, his pacifism might just save them. So he thought.

Michael had had his fair amount of experience with dogs - he had two growing up, knew plenty others that belonged to friends, knew that the district in which he lived had bred a specific kind to serve as company to the guards and fighting forces of their own. These dogs were clearly of the latter type, trained to chase and hurt. Michael thought quickly, grabbing his back and jumping out of the way of the dog that charged to him, but just barely. He sighed. If they could get the dogs - or their owners - to calm down, back away, then maybe they could take another shot at looking into the healthy barricade, to ensure the health of the people and look for the source that Halloway so claims to have found.

Twenty seconds to prove good intent. Twenty seconds to show that they really meant no harm. Twenty seconds that could be put to good use. Admittedly, Michael was a bit annoyed at the use of the man's inductive reasoning, but he supposed that caution overrode sense in times of emergency. Signing now wouldn't do any good. He retrieved the pen and paper from his pocket, and wrote quickly, before passing the small notebook to Arctic. On it was a singular instruction, and the words that Michael wanted to say, but could not. 'Please speak for me. All we want to do is help. Please, reconsider.'

Hands, Butcher and Sonja

"I have to hand it to you, that was an impressive show."

Sonja was dead tired, and it showed in every scrap of her being. Tired eyes still full of suspicion, tinged with success and victory and the hubris that accompanied it, hands dirtied with gunpowder and blood that may or may not have been hers on her clothes. Her breath still fell heavy from the rush of her movement. No matter how it was romanticized, leading a fight, a revolution, was not easy.

Across the room, at the end of a long table as if he intended for it to be theatrical, Finn gave Sonja the slow applause she deserved for overthrowing the man she had lived and served under. "Yes, very impressive. In fact, I am half tempted to call you in for my own guard force." Finn stood. "But I won't do that of course. I do have one thing to say, however."

Here, he stood, taking his sweet and precious time walking to the dirtied Sonja as she waited. He stood in front of her, malice in his eyes and genuine threat on his lips.

"If you ever try any of that in Saile, you are a dead woman."

Aerico, Mags and Star?

Objectively, Star had gotten lucky. The extent of her infection was merely sores on her face and the common cold.

But when Star said that fear was scary, she wasn’t kidding.

The pain from her sores were amplified by the fear that held itself inside her stomach, making her shake at every thought, telling her that there was no hope. Sicknesses like this, plagues, things like this were incurable. She was doomed. But she was a hero. Good things never happened to good people, not in Star’s life. Life had been good to her except now it wasn’t, and she was afraid. She had done so much good, but to die at age 18, barely into the world she wanted to protect, and it was killing her. It was not a hero’s death. It was an ordinary, sick, ruthless death that she could feel creeping up on her with every shiver in her bones. She made a mountain out of this molehill, but to her, it was something she could never climb.

The weeks had passed and Mags had watched Star drive herself crazy with fear. She had watched the little girl worry about her family and her rabbit, cry over the past and the future she thought was lost, watched her laugh at strange times and mention this game or that where the infected never win. The girl wouldn’t sleep for days, afraid that each time she closed her eyes would be her last, while Mags rolled her own eyes when she was turned away. Sickness was gateway to delusion - in the case of some, grandeur. In the case of others, doom.

But eventually, a cure was found. Of course there was - she had never really thought otherwise. With all those working to solve the problem, a solution had to come about somehow. The cure was simple - an injection. That was it. One injection and a few days of recovery.

Star was the only one giving trouble at this point. She had been the first one in Saile’s quarantine and to Mags it seemed like she was hellbent on being the last one out. She shivered in her bed and fought against the doctor, flailing against the arms that held her until finally, finally, someone managed to get her down with a sedative. The cure followed soon after, once Star’s breathing had calmed down and it seemed as if she was asleep. Everyone else went to take a break after fighting her - Mags stayed behind for a moment. She watched the black-haired girl sleep, seemingly at peace, and swept aside some of her fight-tussled hair from out of her eyes.

“You’re going to be okay,” she mumbled. “Wish you would have made that easy on us.”

Of course there would be voices of protest. The healthy who were determined to stay so - he knew that some people could get absolutely crazy when their lives were in danger, to the point of endangering others. And... he didn't want it to be the case that his own life would come to harm because of these people. He was a doctor. He helped people. And that's what he intended to do here. His intentions were to ease the fears of the healthy and help the sick. That was all he could do.

As the voice called out, and Halloway responded, Michael flinched for a moment at Halloway's phrasing. Calling someone a flamethrower was not the best way to make an introduction. But he smiled to keep up his airs, and set down his bag to make a motion with his hands - a thumbs up with his right held in the palm of his left, moving from his chest and outwards. He doubted that anyone could see, and knew they wouldn't hear it, but it was better just in case - better to indicate 'We're here to help' than leave it to that tactless AI.

In his mind, this could only go well. In his mind, there were only thoughts of help and cure and ease. But in his bag were two sets of headphones, made to cancel noise, made to be given to his teammates should worse come to worse, should his silence need to be broken.

Michael was busy before - two jobs, a sister getting out of hand, not enough sleep. The world was heavy on his shoulders, or so it felt. And illness always had a penchant for bad timing, as he had said, and now was as bad a time as any. Though it did take the weight of his newspaper job away, being put onto the team to find a cure for this plague had sufficiently doubled his stress, though not necessarily his work. Besides, it was Michael's choice to go out into the field. He'd barely bet the other two - the blonde fire-wielder who was more like his sister than he'd care to admit, and then the other. He knew nothing of Halloway and more of what he'd done, and that didn't make him a perfect partner in operations. But beggars can't be choosers, as the saying goes, and he figured that perhaps it would be better to have some company for his own reasons - safety in numbers, after all. So out he went, jacket warm and gloves thick, a black bag in one hand that held the supplies he had been allowed - a typical first aid kit and then some. If he could help the sick while he was out, then we would. He was not armed - he was a doctor, not a soldier, after all. Unarmed save for his voice, which of course would go unused in the best of circumstances. In his jacket pocket lay a pen and notepad. Though he heard Halloway's call, he could not respond, and instead settled with jogging to the checkpoint, and waving at the AI once he got there.
