Just got back on this account and saw a notification for this post I made last year and thought I’d piggyback off of it for Yaz.

In hindsight, it was very obvious Yasmina didn’t have a great homelife and that her mom and coaches were negligent at best, exploitive at worst.

Yaz openly spoke about how she competed with an incredibly serious injury that is basically impossible to hide, was under a lot of pressure how her team and coaches relied on her, and continued to work out for roughly five hours a day after recovery, which would take about a year given the fact that she competed with it.

And my gripe is especially with her injury now that I’ve learnt more about it. Because it can’t be stressed enough how serious of an injury that is. She put herself through immense pain and risked permanently disabled herself for the sake of completing the race. That alone would require some sort of intervention. At that point, her coaches and mom should’ve pulled her aside and checked on her, and if necessary told her that if she kept on like that, she’d be off the team, because at that point it’s self-harm.

(I am really kicking myself for not paying that much attention to what Yasmina was saying because it was so blatantly obvious.) (Like I clocked much more ambiguous issues with the other kids while Yaz was outright saying hers.)

The way the show constantly highlights how abusive Daniel was to Kenji while ignoring that Brooklynn and Sammy were casually abused by their parents through intense neglect is driving me up the wall.

It took Brooklynn being presumed dead twice and losing a limb before her parents started keeping an eye on her. Before that she was posting videos about picking hotel room locks at 13, or even younger, and talking to god knows who online as a 13/14yo to 18yo.

And Sammy’s parents didn’t even know she, a 14yo girl, had left the country until she was already on the boat to Nublar. Shady people literally spoke to them about the possibility of trafficking her, and they just let her out of their sight around the time said trafficking would happen and weren’t worried about kidnapping apparently, and then they cut her out over her being right about them making a bad decision for striking up a deal with a dinosaur related company with a shady history for the third time.

Ben’s parents are on thin ice ‘cause I have a lot of mixed feelings about them. Sending your incredibly anxious teen to a camp overseas that they don’t even want to go to, especially over the winter holidays, is super, super shitty.

But at the same time, when things were going alright, Ben was, for the most part, fine. He was anxious but he adjusted quick for how nervous he initially was, Most of his struggles weren’t because he was nervous and afraid, it was because people kept messing with him and not taking him seriously, particularly Kenji, Dave, and Roxie. (How those two even got hired in the first place is beyond me.)

We really do need more realistic depictions of people interacting with their enemies, because why can’t a woman be uncomfortable with two murderous demons flirting with her without people headcanonning that she’s either only attracted to women or attracted to both, but hates the fact that she’s attracted to men?

Don’t get me wrong, I headcanon Mira as queer too, but the line of logic that gets you from “​these dangerous men that have killed people she’s sworn to protect are flirting with her and she’s repulsed by it” to “so that must mean she’s not attracted to men, or she is and she hates that about herself” is a massive leap.

Like, Rumi and Zoey falling for Jinu and Mystery really set her up to be over analysed and picked apart for being the most normal person in their group.
