Nick ran a hand down his face, jaw clenched at the evidence of Charlie’s emotions in their voice. Nodding to himself, he slid his jacket over their shoulders, sliding into his car after waving a rather abrupt goodbye to Saffron and a promise to be home soon. He probably should’ve discussed this with her, but his family needed him. He’d learned to cherish everyone that was left. Musing a small smile finally, Nick shook his head. “Cyrus… Cyrus doesn’t hate you, kid. There’s just… well, what else were either of y’supposed t’do with the shit hand you were dealt?,” he asked honestly. “But he doesn’t hate you. I’m on my way now. Should only be about 8 minutes or so.”
“Sure feels like he does,” they mumbled under their breath. Charlie knew Cyrus held some affection for him, deep down, buried by a lifetime of—as Nick called it—the shit hand that’d been dealt to them both. But for now, regardless of whether he cared for them or not, Cyrus didn’t want them in his home. “I’m really excited to see you,” they said, genuine happiness in their voice as the topic changed. “It’s been so long. God, how big are the girls now? Don’t tell them I’m coming over. I want it to be a surprise.” Charlie was trying to act like this is all completely fine and expected and normal, hoping Nick would just accept it and not ask too many questions.

aksel doesn’t use social media much—the only reason he even has an instagram is to like his siblings’ posts—but he listens to music all the time and actually texts quite a lot. especially petter. it’s been three years since they went to college but the house still feels empty without them.

“ JINA , C’MON , SHARE WITH YOUR SISTER , ” saffron says as she hears the bell above the shop entrance ding . “ sorry , i can’t take anymore clients today . no one else is here and i have these two monkeys to watch . ” she greets as she finishes the last line on the design she’s been working on and looks up at a whining jina . she was just drawing out a few designs for a client who was scheduled to come in the next morning , and the girls had spent the day in the shop with her . she sighs , reaching over to pick up a pencil from where jina had hoarded every warm shade , and handing the pink pencil to talie . she looks up towards the other person though , “ what can i do for you ? ”
despite himself, charlie couldn’t help grinning as he entered the store to find his little cousins causing chaos. it was a trait all of them seemed to share. “i just stopped by to say hello and look around,” he told his aunt, “but if you’d like i can watch them so you can work.” it was the least he could do in exchange for her letting him stay with her family. he didn’t know saffron very well, not nearly as well as nick, but he liked her and wanted to help as much as he could manage. “that’s a lovely design, aunt saffron. you don’t happen to have a family discount?” he asked with a teasing grin.

It would be a lie to say Rami didn’t enjoy watching others stumble over their thoughts and words, he lived for it. It was one of the reasons he loved his job. Reaching for a glass, he spun it around before placing it under the tap and pouring for the man, “If that were my aim, perhaps, but part of the fun of working here is I get to meet gorgeous people almost…daily.” he remarked, sliding the other’s drink across the bar to him. “I only speak the truth, you don’t have to be humble about how attractive you are, ever thought of going into modeling with those cheekbones?”
He watched intently—perhaps too intently, he didn’t know what was appropriate right now—as the bartender poured his drink in the most flashy way possible. He had never known how to deal with men like this: confident, outgoing, making Stefan flustered even when they weren’t trying to. Marie had always gently teased him for that last part, so he could almost imagine her encouraging him to flirt back in his own clumsy way. He sipped his drink slowly, cheeks flushed as he struggled to think of something to say that wouldn’t make him sound like a complete fool. “I never have. But if you spend all day meeting gorgeous people and you think I’m something special....maybe it’s time for a career change.”

“excellent. because i am an amazing friend,” he said in a fake boasting tone. he didn’t mind being thanked but he knew if the situations were reversed, stefan would have done the same for him so there was no need for thanks. “oh don’t be,” he laughed. “leia just gets excited when she has a sleepover but my money is on her for being the well-behaved one. no offense, but people have a hard time say no to her when she wants something.”
“no matter who ends up being the well-behaved one, they’re both going to be incredibly spoiled. i know that already,” stefan laughed softly. even without looking for it, he could see signs of caroline all around declan’s house, and it settled on him like a weight he’d always expected. “how’s leia handling her mother being back, if you don’t mind me asking? or.....does she not know yet?” he couldn’t have blamed declan for keeping his daughter in the dark. if caroline left again, she might be better off not knowing she’d been there to begin with.

“Oh don’t I know that feelin’,” Nick teased. “If I think too hard back on my college days… shoot,” he said, shaking his head despite their nephew not being there to see it. But then Charlie asked to come over. Come over? Where was he? Had he come home - no - Charlie’s home wasn’t Hunstville. Not if Nick’s sister had anything to do with it. “Hey, hey, it’s okay - quick pause,” Nick started. “Pick you up where? I mean I have a pretty good Dadmobile,” he joked gently. “But I don’t have a plane. Are you here in town? In Huntsville I mean?” Before thinking much of it, Nick was looking for their keys. “Of course you can come over, Charlie, don’t be silly. Just tell me where you are - what’s around you - and I’ll be there.”
They never should have doubted their uncle. Of course he’d help them. This might turn out okay, actually. “I—” Charlie choked back a sob, the weight of everything crushing down on him. He needed to get himself under control by the time Nick showed up. Couldn’t let him realize what was actually going on. “I’m sat in front of Cyrus’s house. Tried to talk to him, didn’t go well, but what did I expect? He’s always hated me. Sorry. That was........out of line. Do you need his address? I’m sure you don’t. He always liked you and he said you live nearby so I’m sure you know where he lives.”
