When Luce takes it upon herself to solve the mystery, a fascinating parrel narrative unfolds. While I liked Luce, I loved Fanya and her almost dreamlike narrative. What were your last now and next reads? I just finished I Kissed Shara Wheeler and really enjoyed it. @casey.mcquiston is always a hit for me! My coworkers and I have a book club and so I'm reading The Honey Farm by @harrietalida and am really enjoying this slow burn, atmospheric literary novel. Do you enjoy retellings? Which are your favorites? I'm so thrilled to be a part of a tour for Sense and Second Degree Murder by Tirzah Price hosted through @tbrbeyondtours This retelling of Sense and Sensibility has all the societal commentary and intrepid heroines of Austen's classics with a refreshing murder mystery twist. While I have never actually read Sense and Sensibility I adored this retelling on its own merits and ultimately gave it 4⭐s. Photo take from @penguinteen When you travel, where you do like to stay? Hotel Magnifique by @emilycanwrite tells the story of a magical hotel that appears at destinations all over the world. But Jani and her younger sister Zosa soon learn that beneath the glitter and opulence of magic lies a dark secret that might destroy them all. I have been mulling over my feelings about this one for a few days now. It's getting comparisons to The Night Circus and Caravals and in some ways I can see it. But I just wanted more from it. I found Jani and her character, especially her drive to do the best she can for her sister, to be very compelling but there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end and the plot and magic system got kind of weighed down. 𝓑𝓵𝓸𝓰 𝓣𝓸𝓾𝓻- I'm so thrilled for my stop on the tour featuring The Cartographers by @pengshepherd hosted through @turnthepagetours Shepherd first appeared on my radar with her debut, The Book of M and so I was stoked to hear about her second novel. Set in the world of academia, and more specifically, cartography, I loved reading about the politics of the world as well as the many angles that the study of maps is approached. Nell is the driving force of the narrative, with chapters filling in the exposition and past narrative. I appreciated the structure of the book and the mysterious elements as Well sought to learn the truth about her past. I adored the subtle magical realism touches. The characters felt so real and relateable. I cannot wait for Shepherd's next book. Overall, I gave The Cartographers 4.5⭐ and would recommend it to lovers of The City We Became by NK Jemisen and The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E Harrow. 𝓑𝓵𝓸𝓰 𝓣𝓸𝓾𝓻-- "Monsters are not born. We are made." Blood Scion by @deborahfalaye is one the grittiest and most grown YA novels I have read in a long time. Falaye's debut is packed with dynamic and flawed characters, a rich magic system, and a brutal world that will leave your heart heavy but your fingers turning the pages. It's getting a lot of comparisons to The Hunger Games due to the competitive aspects of the military school Sloane finds herself in. But I would go so far to say, that if you loved the brutality, bleakness and themes of The Poppy War- you need to read Blood Scion. Thank you to @turnthepagetours for allowing me to be a tour host.
