Hi, anon! Welcome, welcome ♡♡♡ That’s a tough question because I think Marvel has been very careful not to show anything that would make Steve or Bucky appear to be too thirsty for each other. That being said, fans keep coming back to a few scenes that leave some wiggle room for interpretation:(n.b.: None of these gifs are mine)1) This long-lashed look Bucky gives skinny!Steve in the back alley during The First Avenger: 

Either Bucky’s preparing to give his best friend important news, or he’s thirsty for a smol, angry Steve. (Maybe both.) 

2) “I thought you were smaller.”

This is supposed to be a joke for the audience, but we saw you give Steve the once-over, Bucky. 

3) “You’re keeping the outfit, right?”

All of the body language…

…in this scene…

…is seriously flirty. Granted, in the movie these movements are much faster (they take about a split second); but still the bar scene is about as close as we come to seeing Steve and Bucky actively hitting on each other. 

4) The jealous side-eye: 

Maybe Bucky’s upset he failed to catch Peggy Carter’s eye. Or maybe he’s upset Peggy Carter is hitting on bae. 

5) That laugh in Winter Soldier:

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of making your fav laugh—and Steve looks so damn pleased he put that smile on Bucky’s face. 

6) The helicopter in Civil War:

Even when his escape is being actively foiled, the Winter Soldier can appreciate those Steve Rogers biceps.

7) The elevator:

TFW you really want to kiss your fav, but you have to fight evil super soldiers instead. 

These are some of the instances embraced by the fandom, but they’re all very subjective and open to your own interpretation.

I know we’re all suffering over Infinity War or whatever, but you know what my major takeaway was re: Steve and Bucky? It’s that Bucky has been awake for a while and Steve has been visiting Wakanda on a regular basis. I’m fully serious about this; I’m not attempting to “fix” a problem with canon by making a fluffy headcanon. This is the first blush impression I got from the movie, and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Why?

We joke about Steve’s “depression beard” a lot, but actually, Steve looks really good in this movie. That guy has been eating a lot of fruit, moisturizing, and getting his beauty sleep. Bucky also looks shockingly healthy and relaxed compared to the last time we saw him. They both seem to be physically and mentally healthier, which doesn’t point to Bucky being freshly de-iced and still processing the worst of his shit. It also doesn’t point to Steve working himself to death and being forcibly separated from his best friend.

Steve seems to have a friendly and relatively informal relationship with T’Challa, which suggests to me that they’ve spent some time together. The other Avengers don’t appear to be very familiar with Wakanda, but Steve knows exactly where he’s going and what he’s doing. 

On top of that, the Avengers seem to have more than adequate funding and appear to be working, but they no longer have the backing of the US government or Stark Industries. Where did they get the resources to do this? Where are their missions coming from? Sure, they’re likely doing their own supervillain hunting and probably some residual Hydra mop-up, but I’m guessing they’re being bankrolled by T’Challa and probably doing a fair bit of collaborative work with Wakandan intelligence. Steve would feel the need to repay T’Challa’s kindness, but what do you get the man who has everything? If you’re Steve, probably loyalty and black ops missions.

When Steve and Bucky greet each other, it feels warm, but also routine, suggesting that this isn’t their first contact since Civil War. This is a greeting you’d expect between two people who last saw each other maybe one or two weeks ago and text each other pictures of what they ate for lunch, not two people who have a lot of unresolved shit and haven’t spoken in years. The tension and sadness you see at the end of Civil War is absent in Infinity War.

Finally, the relationship between Wanda and Vision establishes that it’s possible for Avengers to go off alone for a day or two without any significant notice or concern from the others. Clearly it’s not unheard of for them to take short breaks to do personal stuff.

My take on all this? Bucky’s been up and about for a fairly long time, doing some Wholesome Farm Labor, babysitting some Charming Wakandan Children, and generally getting better. Steve and the Avengers have been running whatever missions come up, and when there’s a break in the action, Steve comes to Wakanda, says hi to T’Challa, and spends a day or two with Bucky. Maybe he takes the opportunity to finally get a full 8 hours of sleep in Bucky’s little hut. I’m just saying; they both look way less tired in this movie. Those are the faces of people who have taken some quality naps together.

The MCU tried to sell a narrative about Bucky wanting a ‘Simple Life’ after being freed of HYDRA, herding his sheep and goats in the rural Wakanda farmlands… but that entire narrative was wiped away when Bucky grinned at the security dome and said “god I love this place”. And it was beautiful.

Because we all know that Wakanda technology is EXACTLY why Bucky wanted to stay in Wakanda. We all know he spent his days hovering around Shuri, just watching her work in the labs because he wanted to see the technology being built. We all know that Bucky lived in a modern apartment in the city and was in awe of all the tiny technological advances. Bucky probably used his sheepherding money to buy Wakandan tech, too - and it was probably tech that did nothing of importance, Bucky just wanted it because it was cool. He probably couldn’t contain his excitement over dumb stuff like kitchen equipment, and Wakandans found him oddly endearing because of that.

This is the boy who spent his last night before being shipped to the Front at a Stark Expo because he needed to see a floating car. A city in Wakanda is everything pre-war Bucky would have dreamed of a Perfect Future.

Cab we talk about the fact the shock and disbelief on Bucky’s face when he heard Spiedman’s voice the first time?

He wasn’t suprised that his arm was stopped, he had fought enough times with freaky supersodilers and men in tin suits and who the hell know what.

He could have just kept punching him with his other arm, like you know, he usually does, since the metal arm for him is just a part of his skills; he himself is the weapon, and I’m sure that the people who have mistaken these had paid a great price for underestimating him.

No, he hears Peter’s vocie, a fucking 15-7 year old kid’s voice and he’s like ‘what the hell a kid like this is doing there? oh my god, I could have added another dead kid to my list”.

And in the next shot(of witch we still don’t fooatage) he’s standing down completely, body and arme relaxing. In the middle of a fight. Yes, you heard that right, James Buchanan Barnes’s, the WW II veteran’s, the Winter Soldier’s first, insticive reaction to that is ‘nope I’m not fucking doing this’.

And if that one alone doesn’t prove that he’s a good man then I don’t know what does.

could bucky and peggys parallels be more obvious? like yes we know about the tall/dark/strong/common sense to steves idealism/dangerous and beautiful parallel (steves type) but cw drove it home with peggy in her coffin and bucky in the cryo tank that resembles one. in less than a month steve lost the two people he loved more than life itself and no matter how many wars he waged he couldn’t stop it from happening
