10:15 am // I’ve been dormant in my studyblr community participation for quite some time. Through the pressure of applications and working much more, my identity has diverged quite a bit from the all-consuming academic persona many of us know so well. Here’s a reminder and a thank you that it’s ok to come and go from the studyblr community. School is important, but balance is crucial. Sending you all calm and balanced energy as I work on some schoolwork this morning. 💕

Friday // pics taken in the library today during my “studyish” session. Right after lecture I like to decompress and collect myself a bit, while my brain recharges enough to focus again! During “studyish” times I look over my planner, read over assignments to improve my understanding, and generally take on tasks that are important but require a lower level of concentration & mental function. I really like the idea that you can work on something softly, without each time you sit down being incredibly intense. It’s good for when you need to recharge, or when you only have a little bit of time (like between classes or meetings).

This library / reading room at school makes my heart swell with happiness :) Also today was day 1 of instruction and I had 3 of my 4 classes. So far I am feeling good about them! Though when I got home I had a very scattered energy so I haven’t been able to begin the work I’ve set for myself... Good luck to everyone in their first weeks & enjoy your last bit of break if you’ve yet to start!

Today was pretty good and calm! It was my last full day at home - tomorrow I have to go to campus and Wednesday instruction begins. I started to lay out my calendar for this month and next, and I did this little watercolor study. I’ve been out of school for a while as I needed to save money, so I’m a little nervous to go back. (But excited too!)

10:00 am // study setup & my comparative government notes for this morning

Study tip: take one day a week as a “catch-up” day for work you may have missed or forgotten during the rest of the week. This greatly reduces the stressful feeling that you are falling behind. By scheduling in this specific time, you allow yourself to be human. We can’t all study perfectly to our schedules! Embrace that and work around it.

3:40 pm // I love setting up new notebooks for the school year. This one is a MD graph notebook, which I will be using for stats! I’m getting myself excited for the first day of instruction on Wednesday.

3:35 pm // doing some planning this afternoon in my Hobonichi, in addition to playing around with goodnotes4 on my iPad. I was using notesplus before but I like goodnotes much better - recommended if you are looking to take visual notes on an iPad.

This seems like something everyone should know if they’re in the sciences and/or interested in reading scientific papers.

I’d like to address a double standard I have occasionally struggled with in the academic blogging community. We all know that thoughtful and effective time management is key to academic success and a healthy lifestyle. And, though I understand that everyone has different struggles, hobbies, pulls on their time, and ways to make themselves happy, a simple truth is this: if you have two or three extra hours in your day to make your planner a museum-quality collage, and queue thousands of tumblr posts, or do any number of highly curated lifestyle activities, you most likely have the privilege of extra time in your life.

I believe that all individuals have the right to use their time as they choose. I also know that to each of us, internally, our work load and time constraints are the most pressing. But I’d like to acknowledge students with hardly any of that most valuable of commodities - time. I want to bring some visibility to the long-distance commuters, the parents, and the full-time employee students out there. When every moment is allocated towards a specific goal, and getting that degree seems more like a financial/familial/time drain than a whimsical journey of knowledge. Academia is difficult for us all at some points, but to those of you who have a bit more piled on: you are strong for managing the way you do.

I travel 1.5 hours each way to my university. I work as much as I can around my time spent on the road and in classrooms, to reduce the size of the loans I need to live and learn. I know there are so many with situations much, much more complicated. Students with families, students who work more than they should have to, students with illnesses or disabilities, students with extenuating circumstances of all types - you are amazing and strong! You bring so much to the table. You give 100% to being in school, yet there are other, equally important claims on the hours in your day. Here’s to supporting all of you.

I really appreciate the lack of ageism in the studyblr community. I love that I can see an 8th or 9th grade student posting "today we're back at the parabolas" and then right after get a glimpse of the notes of someone wrapping up grad school. This blog supports and admires the hard work of students at every step of the academic journey. You can do it xx

Can you talk more about Inkscape or suggest a tutorial? I'm intimidated, but I'm a OneNote junkie and your layouts look so good!

Hi! So for a post like this one I used a bunch of different techniques. Most of the basic layout is done in onenote using methods I learned from the wonderful @yolandastudies. Hereee is a link to that wonderful tutorial.

I also just used the check boxes and star markers that come within onenote - which you’re probably familiar with!

For the doodle, I hand drew it first. Vectorizing a hand drawn doodle is really easy in inkscape and then you can use it for all sorts of stuff! This tutorial shows you how to vectorize clipart, but if you import a picture/scan of a doodle it works exactly the same way. Stick to black&white or grayscale; making colored vectors off of hand drawn stuff can also be done but that’s a whole different tutorial. 

This tutorial shows you how to use the calendar function in inkscape. It was a while ago but I think to make that customized 2 month calendar I just used the function 2 times separately, then moved one calendar under the other and grouped 2 together.

Also~ to put doodles calendars or anything else you want in onenote from inkscape, first export as a png from inkscape because I don’t think onenote deals with the svg files well.
