Welcome to High School: those great four years of your life
My little brother is a rising freshman and I’ve been giving him a lot of advice so I figured I would share it. Some of this is going to refer to the US education system, but a lot of it is general info, so don’t worry. Anyway, here you go:
During Freshman year, learn about high school and understand it.
Sophomore year is going to be really, really rough.
They aren’t lying when they say Junior year is the most important.
Don’t think that because you’re a Senior means that its all over and you can relax.
With that said, here’s some more specific info for you…
if you can do it in school, then do it
procrastination will always be a mistake and you’ll always regret it
all-nighters aren’t cool or okay, do your work as soon as you get home
you won’t be able ot work if you wake up at 3am
never leave all your work for the last night of the weekend
sparknotes is a beautiful, beautiful place
if you don’t know it, google it, someone, somewhere, most probably has the answer
and if you do google it, understand why the answer was that answer, and how they worked out the problem
ask your teachers for extra credit if you think you need it
it’s okay if you don’t do your homework once, or twice, or thrice, you’ll live
do not try to copy a friends answers in class or before class or ever
there’s no point in getting full marks on homework if you never understood what you did, make sure you learn it for the future
once again, ask them for extra credit if you need it
even if it’s hard, talk to them
ask them for help, tell them about yourself
why? because someone has to fill out those recommendation forms for you when you’re applying for college
if your teacher doesn’t help you, go to another teacher who teaches the same subject
a lot of teachers can be awful at teaching,if that’s the case then you have to take your own initiative, at least a little bit, and study on your own
do not disrespect your teachers for no good reason
AP’s are hard, no matter how smart you may be
don’t take an AP if you think you can’t handle it
do not take every AP your school offers because you think it’ll give you the top GPA and get you into the best college in the nation
an A in an honors class is better than C in an AP
think about your future a little before signing up for a class, you don’t need to take that AP psychology class for your physics major
it’s okay to take AP classes to experiment and think about what to pursue in the future
it is perfectly fine if you don’t get a 4 or a 5 in an AP class, you will live
while AP’s are a brilliant way to save time and money, they can also be a great way to lose time and money, if you don’t take them seriously
Friends and other students
don’t think you can make it for four years without someone to talk to
don’t think you can make ti for three years without someone to talk to
don’t think you can make it for two years without someone to talk to
don’t think you can make it for a year without someone to talk to
don’t think you can make it without someone to talk to
take advantage of group projects to try and make friends (it works, okay)
you don’t need five friends, sometimes one is just okay
talk to people, humans cannot survive without interacting with others
your friends don’t dictate your life, don’t let them
that’s going to be difficult, I know, but you have the strength and the ability to take charge of your own life, I believe in you
stay away from toxic people
its hard, i know, but you have to do it
have fun, don’t see them as a burden, or something that you just need to for college apps
if a club interests you just a little bit, go attend that interest meeting
as long as you don’t hide in the corner of the room, you are very likely to make a friend
if you like a sport but you think you’re awful, go to the tryouts
seriously, go to the tryouts, even if you can’t play
don’t think that, just because your current personality doesn’t fit with the socially required personality for a certain club/activity, you can’t participate in it, because you can
but you need to work hard so it doesn’t happen again
if it does, that’s okay too
there’s nothing wrong with you for considering a C a fail in your mind, because a lot of people spend a great deal of their life with super high marks and then they learn that things are a whole lot more complicated
you are going to fail at a lot of things at life, but they’re called mistakes and you will learn from them
so learn from what you do, and do your best not to do it again
the reason why we, as humans, fail, is because we aren’t perfect and we need to learn
so learn, darling, you’ll be okay
the lunchroom/cafeteria/whatever you want to call it, can be a very intimidating place
do not skip lunch just because you have no one to sit with
do not skip lunch because people have made fun of you ( and you know what I mean here ) or because you think you shouldn’t eat ( you also know what I mean here )
sitting alone isn’t that bad
the whole lunchroom is not staring at you, I promise
enjoy your lunch break because you will need it constantly to take a break from classes
it is okay to spend lunch studying or in the library learning (as long as you eat) it doesn’t make you anti-social and if your friends get mad at you for it then they aren’t very good friends
stress is part of being human
make sure you study the whole year not just near the end for exams
you will survive, I believe in you
study hard, study harder, and study the hardest you can
never, never, never underestimate an exam, no matter how easy the class was
even if you’re Einstein, don’t underestimate an exam
study alone and study with people, find the right way to study that fits you
stress is part of being human
not just doing your homework every day
revise material, work on stuff you have trouble understanding, be organized
being organized is super hard, but you can find a method to your own madness
work on stuff you have trouble understanding, repeatedly
always ask teachers for help if you need it
it’s okay to take study breaks every once in a while, you need time to yourself and you need space to breathe and live
breathing and living is very important
there will come times when you study well but you just don’t get the grade, these are lessons that you can learn from
There you have it, a long list of reminders and tips for high school, and just school in general. I’ll probably add to this as time goes by, but for now… I hope this helped!
