50 Things to Ask on Med School Interviews
Back at it again with these lists.
And it had been a minute. Who knew the day would come when I would be done with med school. But I know interviews are rolling so itâs important to be able to answer the question âdo you have any questions?â Rather than sit and shake your head, fearing the worst, Iâve complied a list of questions for anyone to use based on my hindsight.Â
In my best attempt to stay neutral, I hope this big list can help you stay informed, learn what you need to and look good. There are plenty of things missing, but this is pretty good start.Â
What is the learning style is used at this school (PBL, traditional, combo, systems)?
What does the usual day of a first year look like? Second year?
Are classes mandatory?
Are clickers utilized in the classroom?
Do lectures get recorded?
Are classes tested individually or as larger block exams?
Are there any tutoring services?
What does the school do in terms of board prep?
How much time is left to dedicated board study?
How well do you feel this program prepared students for boards?
Where do students tend to study?
Are the study spaces shared with other programs? Or undergraduates?
What materials are provided for learning (qbanks, books, ipads)?
What are the hours of facilities?
Is there a dress code?
What services are available to students?
Is there any mental health counselling or ways to receive care through the school?
Who works with students if there are concerns or problems?
What is the leave or absence policy?
How does the program help students who are struggling (academically, personally, finacially)?
Are their TA opportunities, or other work opportunities?
How is anatomy lab run (dissection/prosection/no-section)?
How many people work with a single cadaver?
How many hours a week, approximately, are spent in the lab?
How often do students work with standardized patients?
How are the students tested using standardized patients?
Does the program support simulated learning?
How often do students use simulators?
What type of clubs does the school support?
Where and how do students generally volunteer?
What ways can 1st and 2nd years get some clinical experience?
How does this program cultivate teamwork?
What research is supported at that school?
Are there an expectations or requirements for research?
If so, are you assigned research, or can you scope it out on your own?
Is there an affiliated hospital with the school/college of medicine?
Do most students stay in the same place of the school or are they spread out?
How many anchor spots with specific hospitals does the school have?
How many weeks are core rotations?
Does the school have rural/underserved rotations?
Can a third year go out of system to complete a rotation?
How many electives does a third year get?
How many electives does a fourth year get?
Approximately how many auditions does a student from this school have the opportunity to do?
How is fourth year organized in terms of completed required rotations?
What do students do for fun in this area?
Do you feel like students have good rapport with each other?
Where do students generally live and do many have to move throughout the 4 years?
Are their opportunities to collaborate as a team with other students?
Do you like it here?
Hope you like it! Hope it help!
Good luck!

Canât Stand it!
Alright, now that Iâm done failing the N2 again I have some time to post and boy do I have a mountain of notes and comparisons. So today, I will be talking about ïœăŠăăŸăăȘăăïœăŠăȘăăȘăăand ïœăȘăă§ăŻăăăăȘă which all have similiar meanings.
ïœăŠăăŸăăȘă means â dying to do; unbearablyâ This is used with verbs and adjectives (VăŠ/ă€AdjăăŠ/ăAdjă§) This for strong feelings or physical sensations. If your subject in is the 3rd person, you must use ăăă ăăăăăor ăźă at the end of the sentence.

ăăĄăźćäŸăŻè©Šćă«èČ ăăăźăăăăăăŠăăŸăăȘăăăă§ăă
ïœăŠăȘăăȘă means âcanât help butâ This is used with verbs and adjectives (VăŠ/ă€AdjăăŠ/ăAdj㧠)When you cannot suppress emotions or physical sensations that naturally arise. Often used to indicate a state of mind that cannot be suppressed and results in a highly emotional condition. This often expresses negative feelings. This must also use ăăă ăăăăăor ăźă at the end of the sentence when in 3rd person.

ćœŒăŻćžæăźć€§ćŠă«ć „ăăȘăăŠăæźćż”ă§ăȘăăȘăăźă ăÂ
ïœăȘăă§ăŻăăăăȘă and also seen as ïœăă«ăŻăăăăȘă means âcanât resist; canât not doâ This is only used with verbs in the ïœăŠ form. Used to express something that the speaker sees and cannot overcome the strong feeling of wanting to do something about it. Itâs important to know that this is not because speaker cannot control themself and is forced, but rather than itâs done spontaneously. This must also use  ăăă ăăăăăor ăźă at the end of the sentence when in 3rd person.Â

èšăăȘăă»ăăăăăăšăŻćăăŁăŠăăăă話ăăȘăă§ăŻăăăăȘăăŁăă
In conclusion, ïœăŠăăŸăăȘă is âdying to do something/unbearableâ if the heat is unbearable or youâre dying to meet someone, ïœăŠăȘăăȘă is âcanât help but (doing/feeling)â if you canât help but feeling disappointed by your test score or someone canât help feeling sad after some bad news, and ïœăȘăă§ăŻăăăăȘă is âcanât not do somethingâ like if BeyoncĂ© releases a new album you canât NOT listen to it
I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any questions!
Japanese English | ćèŁœè±èȘ Hey guys, so most Japanese learners would know that katakana is used mostly for words that have been borrowed from other languages. However, Iâve come across many Japanese words in katakana that appear to be of English origin, but are in fact not. This is called ćèŁœè±èȘăăăăăăăă, which can be translated as âJapanese English/Japanese-made Englishâ. Below are a list of ćèŁœè±èȘ that I have come across a lot during my studies! Donât worry. Start now. Get up, take a few deep breaths, stretch, count to ten with your eyes closed. Then take out your books and a notebook and a pen. Get on with it. Start reading, annotating, take down your notes. If you feel your focus faltering, sit back, take a few deep breaths, walk around a bit, get back to your books. Itâs never too late.
please make sure that wherever youâre at in life, you donât treat it like a transitory period. donât waste your college years wishing to already be graduated & have a job. donât waste your single years wishing for someone to be in love with. if/when those things come, they will come in due time and they will be good. but there is nothing like looking back and feeling empty because you wasted literal years ignoring what you had because you were hoping for something better. while itâs important to better yourself and reach for your goals, donât neglect the present because thatâs where you are now and itâs your now that determines your future.Â

Advice for pre-Meds
To keep up during college, itâs really just small amounts of consistent dedication. You can still have free time and maintain a high GPA, work in a lab, and volunteer for an hour a week if you manage youâre time well.Â
Study early- for classes, I rewrite my notes right after class (since memory retention goes down so much over time, the sooner you reinforce the material, the better) and I make flash cards and study guides as we go through the material so that when itâs test time, thereâs no need to cram or have extra stress (I really hate stress). And if you get a B (or even a C), thatâs really ok too.Â
For the extracurriculars- you have to know that thereâs no one route to medical school. You can do a variety of different things and theyâll accept it. For me, I really hated research. I did it for one semester and couldnât stand it. But I liked teaching so instead, I worked in a teaching lab rather than a research lab and got to help explain the material to the students.Â
For volunteering- find something you like. Donât volunteer somewhere just because you think medical schools will like it. My main volunteer experiences were being a bible study leader and working with hospice care patients. I spent about 3 hours a week with those two activities and it didnât feel like work, it felt fun. Pick activities that arenât a chore. Oh and write down little things about the volunteering and clinical experiences you get as you go.  For the actual medical school application, you have to describe each experience and talk about what they meant to you and itâs much easier to recall why that thing you did 3 years ago mattered to you if you have a little note to yourself that you can look back onÂ
Clinical experience/shadowing experience- main advice for this is to start early and spread it out. Donât wait for the last semester before you apply to try and get 200 hours in a hospital. The stress and pressure will make you miserable. But, if you try for once or twice a semester to shadow a different type of physician, then by the end, youâre application will look really good. For clinical experience, there are ways to multitask. My hospice volunteering also counted for clinical experience and I worked as an ER scribe (which also helped me get letters of recommendation)
MCAT- I know the MCAT is what stops a lot of students from wanting to go to medical school. Â Iâm not gonna lie; it is long, it is difficult, and it can be scary. Â But, if you start studying early and spend enough time doing practice tests and reviewing the material, you can get through it. Â I recommend getting prep books fairly early on in college so that after each class you take in University, you can review that subjectâs prep book and see what from that course will be important to remember. Â Then refresh yourself on those concepts a few times a month/semester so when the MCAT rolls around, there are a few subjects you barely need to study since youâve been doing it already. Â
Lastly, donât listen too much to what other people are doing. I know SDN.com is very tempting to stalk but it will do nothing but make you paranoid. Same with youâre other pre-Med classmates who are bragging about their insanely high GPAs. Do youâre own thing and youâll do fine.
âWherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanityâ -Hippocrates
