uh, if you think you are going to need a new computer in the next six months and you have money to buy it now, and you have been able to find it in stock someplace, go buy it now.

It is my actual, professional, real-life job to buy computers for businesses and right now that is basically impossible.

I found one computer that will kind-of work for someone who has been waiting on an order that WE'VE been waiting on from our vendor for a month and when I placed the order for that computer it was almost sold out. I don't even know if I'm going to get an email tomorrow saying that the order was cancelled due to stock imbalances.

Look at this:

My Lenovo rep sends me an inventory of what's in stock with the big resellers nationwide every two weeks. This shows that there were about 400 Lenovo Business desktops stocked through the whole of the US. There are normally at least a couple thousand split up among various vendors and part numbers.

This inventory is from a month ago, all of those part numbers are currently at approximately zero. When she sent me her inventory update last Friday it was all for chromebooks, no desktops or laptops.

I have to get monitors for an office, a total of 8. The main vendor I use was out of stock and so were two of the other ones I have accounts for, so I waited a couple days. I saw on Wednesday at 10am that the main vendor had 197 of the monitors in stock at $134 each. I went to place the order at 11am after I was out of the meeting and there were only 4 left in stock and they were at $158. I managed to find 8 monitors for my customer today, but they were not the models that matched the ones currently in her office and she had to choose between keeping the same price but getting monitors that need a converter and only having a one-year warranty OR getting the same brand (though a slightly different model) with the same inputs and the same warranty but paying $50 more per monitor.

It has been a pain in the ass to buy graphics equipment for years, and there have been ups and downs with HDDs and SSDs and RAM, but this is the biggest overall "everything computer related" shortage that I've seen and that includes the run on laptops last year and various other floods and disasters that have taken out big chunks of the supply chain.

SO my advice is to try to keep your current devices running as best you can, do some preventative maintenance and make some backups and make sure they aren't getting heat stressed.

If you can afford a computer right now and you think you'll need one and you've found one for a good price, go get it.

Black Friday/holiday sale computers are usually pretty crap but if you think you may need to get a computer at a discount, that's the time to look for one and now's the time to start saving for it. Just make sure you're getting a relatively new processor because a lot of people are unloading stuff with older processors at low prices because they won't be compatible with Windows 11.

RAM, HDDs, and SSDs are actually pretty stable at the moment so if you think you can get your computer to limp along for a while longer with an upgrade instead of a replacement, try that.

Remember: if you kill your laptop screen you can always plug it in to an external monitor, and if you kill the keyboard or trackpad you can plug in USB devices instead of using the built-in components. If your battery is dead but the computer still works when it's plugged in, you can often replace the battery cheaply. If your battery is swollen, remove the battery and discard it, but remember that you will likely still be able to use your computer when it is plugged in.

Try to take care of your tech and treat it gently for a while if you can; don't yank out cables, don't drop shit, don't keep drinks around your devices and if you have pets or if you smoke, consider opening up your device and cleaning up accumulated ash/dust/dander/hair etc.

Pals, I really respect the "fuck bitcoin" energy in the notes and, yes, crypto mining has had an enormous impact on GPU prices and shortages in the last few years, but I cannot explain enough that no, there is not a global shortage of semiconductors because bitcoin miners are buying up all the chips.

First of all, it's not JUST chips that are in short supply. Plastic is in short supply. Plywood is out of stock. Zippers and yarn and aluminum tubing are shipping on a delayed schedule. There are global supply chain echoes of the pandemic across pretty much every industry.

The pandemic, industry bottlenecks, cancelled orders in 2020, increased demand for consumer electronics, a drought in Taiwan, port congestion and the resulting shipping crisis, and a fire at an auto processor factory have all contributed to the semiconductor shortage.

Don't get me wrong here, bitcoin sucks. But this goes way, way, way beyond miners buying up all the good video cards.

Friends, now is a really, really, really good time to see if you can do anything to be more self-sufficient. Now is a really good time to learn how to mend clothes, now is a really good time to learn how to fix your car, now is a really good time to learn something about plumbing, now is a really good time to start a tool library.

Do you have a chainsaw but not a sewing machine? Does your grandma have a stand mixer but no jack? Does your friend have a sewing machine but no chainsaw? Does your neighbor have a jack but no stand mixer? Talk to the people you know and set up a list of who has what. Talk to the people you know and make a list of who has what skills. Maybe your grandma can bake your neighbor a cake in exchange for an oil change. Maybe your friend can mend your pants in exchange for taking down a tree.

Who has lawnmowers, who had drill presses, who knows plumbing, who knows computers? Maybe the girl who knows computers can strip old computers around the neighborhood for parts in order to keep new computers running.

Does someone have a shed where hard drives and power tools can be stored? Does someone have a car they can lend if someone else's car breaks? If nobody has storage space, would everyone involved be interested in pitching in to share the cost of a storage unit with shared access? There is an avocado tree full of ripening fruit in my yard. I'll trade with my neighbor whose yard is full of pomegranates and artichokes. There is a person around the corner with chickens; we can help build a bigger coop and then we can trade eggs.

You may need to buy a computer, or a car part, or to order specialized things that you can't get locally. You may need to do that now, you may need to do that in the future.

But you really, really, really need to learn how to use a wrench and a needle, and you need to reach out to the people around you.

When we got our van for the shop recently (we've outgrown being able to put everything we bring to shows into our sedan), we had to wait several months and order a van, basically put a claim on the VIN before it was even manufactured, and then hope it got manufactured in time for the cons we planned on going to (heh) because the time when you could just walk into a dealership and be like 'yes, I want this car'?

That time is not now. (And if you've been thinking about getting rid of a used car that you're not using or going down to one car or whatever, now is a time when you can get good money for used cars in decent condition -- places have been calling us bc my sedan and my wife's are both very in-demand models. They were offering my wife like... twice blue book for her 14 year old hatchback, bc she has taken really good care of it.)

But... yeah, we've been seeing shortages in every kind of pre-made clothing for printing basically since the pandemic began. (I had kind of advance warning that COVID was gonna be bad -- when the manufacturer for our canvas boots, who is in Wuhan, totally shut down "until further notice" in January 2020, I told my partners: "Let's make sure we have a chest freezer and everything we think we'll need if we're gonna have to stay in the house for a while." A month and a half later... )

Anyway, that's part of why (if you've been paying any attention to what we have been putting up on our site in the past 2 years) you've seen us moving away from things like logo t-shirts and toward things like all-over-print dresses, button-ups, and all-over-print t-shirts. Trying to find a Gildan 5000 5XL Black t-shirt last year was like hunting microscopic needles in skyscraper-sized haystacks, because every stage of the t-shirt manufacturing process was fucked up: cotton, fabric-production, t-shirt manufacturing itself, shipping... just yesterday Erykah had to email a customer and swap out their t-shirt color bc the 'dark grey' in their size was out of stock. That's a really common shirt color!

The dresses and so on aren't printed and sewn until they're ordered, and the companies that make those for us just buy giant fuck-off rolls of the fabric, which they use for hundreds of different products. So far, we have not seen a huge issue with those, though I expect as we get closer to the holidays we might. (I also suspect that we might have issues with slow production on boots and hoodies since things like 'boot soles' and 'zippers' may have issues.)

And that's not even addressing how much postage and shipping have slowed down. We can't ship anything to Australia or New Zealand (or a bunch of other countries) from our home studio in Oregon right now without paying twice what we usually do, since First Class Package service has been suspended & the only way to send packages to Australia and NZ right now is via Priority Mail, UPS, FedEx or DHL. And it still takes a long time.

Which brings me to something I've wanted to make a post about for a while but I wasn't sure how to say it without sounding totally alarmist or self-serving:

If you're shopping for the holidays? Start now. No, I'm not joking. Get your shopping done as soon as possible. There will be shortages, things you want will be out of stock. Shipping will absolutely take forever, and it will take longer the closer to the holidays you wait, so shop now.

You can take this as your opportunity to shop with small artists, people who already have things made, things that are easily fulfilled and don't rely upon a lot of other moving parts. You can take this opportunity to make your own stuff. But whatever you choose? Please make that choice as soon as possible, so you're not getting cancellations of orders bc things can't be shipped, so you're not getting people's presents at the start of February bc the mail has gotten so backed up... please please please.

Things that Keep Me Up At Night About SasuNaru

Naruto and Sasuke KISSED in their first chapter together.

We see Sasuke’s Sharingan for the first time when he reawakened it because he thought Naruto was going to die.

Sasuke’s body “moves on it’s own” to save Naruto.

Naruto entered Tailed Beast Mode for the first time because he thought Sasuke DIED.

Sasuke’s final thoughts before he “died” were all centered around Naruto which even included their first kiss.

Hurting Sasuke or HECK EVEN MENTIONING Sasuke in a bad light is a surefire way to trigger Naruto.

Naruto and Sasuke were all BLUSHY AND AVOIDING each other’s glances after wave country.

Sasuke’s first thought upon learning that Itachi is back in Konoha is to SAVE NARUTO.

Sasuke just CANNOT KILL NARUTO and it’s not because he can’t based on his skills or on a “whim” as he puts it.

Naruto WOULD RATHER BE AN IDIOT AND A GENIN ALL HIS LIFE if it meant saving Sasuke.

Naruto would REFUSED TO BECOME HOKAGE unless he saved Sasuke.

Naruto never needed anyone to tell him that he should go after Sasuke because NARUTO GOES AFTER SASUKE BECAUSE HE WANTS TO.

Naruto wished for Sasuke on a shooting star.

Naruto literally had a panic attack at the thought of Sasuke dying.

Sasuke called Naruto his “one and only”.

Sasuke could have died at the last battle between Naruto and him but HE LIVED FOR NARUTO.

Naruto is the hopeful heart that connects Sasuke to Konoha. (i.e. the only reason why Sasuke even gives Konoha the time of day)

Every member of the Otsutsuki clan who has seen Naruto and Sasuke together have acknowledged their bond or have worked towards getting Naruto and Sasuke together.

Naruto left Konoha and Ichiraku Ramen to train for three years with Jiraiya to save Sasuke. NARUTO LEFT RAMEN FOR SASUKE.

Naruto and Sasuke are literal soulmates.

UPDATE [June 25, 2020]

Naruto and Sasuke have canonically watched each other since they were children and have felt a kinship with one another long before they became teammates.

SASUKE FED NARUTO EVEN THOUGH THE CONSEQUENCE WAS BEING SENT BACK TO THE ACADEMY which can ultimately set him back on his goal of killing Itachi.

Naruto and Sasuke know each others hearts like no one else in the entire series.

Naruto DOES NOT NEED A GENJUTSU to know that Sasuke is someone who he treasures. HECK! NARUTO EVEN BROADCASTED HIS ENTIRE INNER THOUGHTS ON SASUKE TO ALL THE NINJAS IN THE 4TH SHINOBI WAR VIA INO.

Sasuke only thought of going back to Konoha during his redemption journey because he read a letter from NARUTO and ALL OF NARUTO’S MESSY HANDWRITTING. I’m sobbing!!!

The only time we see Sasuke cry and laugh in happiness as well as feel content was when he was literally BLEEDING OUT TO DEATH besides NARUTO.

NARUTO when faced with the choice of either letting Sasuke kill everyone in Konoha or killing Sasuke CHOSE TO DIE WITH SASUKE. THIS BOY WOULD DIE FOR SASUKE BECAUSE WHO THE HECK CARES ABOUT RETURNING TO KONOHA AND BEING HOKAGE IF HE LOSES SASUKE?!

Naruto is WILLING TO BE BEATEN UP, CRY, AND GROVEL just to save Sasuke’s life. HE IS WILLING TO LOOK WEAK AND PATHETIC IN FRONT OF THE FREAKING RAIKAGE FOR SASUKE.

Itachi himself entrusted Sasuke to Naruto. NARUTO HAS ITACHI’S BLESSING TO BE THE ONE FOR SASUKE.

Sasuke is the only “friend” of Naruto who has ever met Naruto’s mother. SASUKE HAS KUSHINA’S BLESSING TO BE WITH NARUTO.

And that’s just a few that I could think about right now.  But don’t worry I’ll update this list every now and then.
