“This place gives me the creeps,”
Date: 22.06.18 Requests Masterlist
It was hard to pin-point the exact time in your life where your thirst for adventure had shown itself. From as long as you could remember, you could recall yourself being in situations you shouldn’t – the majority of your memories also involved a certain Liam Dunbar. It was also hard to pin-point the moment your feelings for your childhood best friend had changed and evolved into something more.
It seemed as though he had always played a huge part in your life from as young as the age of three up until high school. It was only now, as he began spending more time with his older friends like Scott McCall that you had felt a rift appear in your friendship with him. He was more secretive and had less time to spend with you because he was always off running around in the woods with McCall and his friends.
Perhaps it shouldn’t have bothered you as much as it did. After all, friends drift a part all the time. But there was something different about you and Liam, you had always been able to tell each other everything (apart from the fact that you had a huge crush on him) but it seemed as though every brief conversation you had with him recently was full of secrets and lies, as though he was holding something back that he desperately wanted to tell you but couldn’t.
Maybe that was how you found yourself standing at the mouth of an abandoned mine-shaft. Perhaps you wanted to prove something to yourself, that you could go on adventures without Liam. Or maybe it was just because you missed the thrill of exploring with no idea what was lurking in the shadows.
Either way, you stood in the gaping dark abyss that was the mine-shaft that you had stumbled across while running through the woods. Your palms were sweating with anticipation as you tried to peer as far as you could into the darkness without actually stepping forwards, only being able to make out a few cobwebs and some leaf-covered rusted rail tracks on the ground.
With a sigh, you pulled out your phone and began scrolling until you found the torch. You turned it on and took your first step into the mine-shaft, leaves crunching under your feet as you did so. All your senses were focused on the tunnels, one of your hands running along the stone wall to your right as you looked forwards, never turning back. It was only when you felt something snake around your shoulders that you screamed and jumped forwards, whirling around to face the entrance of the mine-shaft as you tried to see what had attacked you.
He was practically bending over as he held onto his sides as he laughed. Your scream died on your lips as you took in the sight of your ‘attacker’ and you stalked over to him quickly. He could barely look at you as you stood above him, your arms crossed over your chest with your feet practically tapping on the spot as you resisted the urge to physically hurt him – the idea of kicking him seemed very appealing to you in the moment.
Once Liam finally got over himself and found that he could face you his bright eyes, filled with unshed tears from laughing at you met your harsh glare and he bit his lips to stop from laughing again.
“You’re an idiot, Liam.” You all but growled in his face as you watched his face contort into an almost painful expression as he desperately tried to stop himself from laughing at your expense.
“Oh come on, Y/N! That was funny.” You turned and stalked away from him as he called and chased after you. He easily met your brisk pace as you walked further into the tunnels of the mine-shaft and he pulled out his own phone to use as a torch to light up the way.
“What are you even doing here?” You huffed, your anger subsiding and your pace slowing as you tried to take in your surroundings and easily fell into your normal routine with Liam that you had seemed to perfect over the years of exploring the two of you had done together.
“Cant a guy just decide to check out a creepy old cave anymore?” he teased as he glanced your way. You could only roll your eyes at him and knock his shoulder with your own as you continued to look around.
“Fine don’t tell me.” You huffed and grabbed some of the cobwebs on the ceiling in your hand before throwing them in Liam’s face. He screeched as he realized what you had done, leading to the painfully loud belly-laugh that erupted from you as you tried to mutter the words, “Payback,” to him but it barely came out as a mere wheeze.
After that, it was as if nothing had changed between you and Liam. As if he hadn’t been distant with you for months or been hiding his secrets. It was as if everything was normal between the two of you. It was perfect.
You could have spent an eternity in that tunnel. You and Liam talked about seemingly nothing during the entire venture and you tried not to notice the subtle stutters in his words as he talked about the things he did with Scott and the others.
“This place gives me the creeps, Y/N.” Liam finally said and you shrugged your shoulders in response, trying to resist the urge to roll your eyes.
“I didn’t ask you to be here, did I?” Your sassy tone made Liam roll his head back on his shoulders as he groaned before stopping abruptly. Within the unseeable dark abyss in front of them a low snarl-like sound seemed to ripple through the walls of the cave, causing Liam’s nose to flare as a barely detectable growl emitted past his gritted teeth.
His eyes flashed into a red-tinted blur as he partly transitioned into his werewolf state for a moment as he tried to enhance his status. If you had turned just at the right moment you might’ve been able to catch a glimpse of his golden eyes but by the time the sound from the end of the tunnel registered to your human ears, he had already phased in and out of his werewolf state.
“Did you hear that?” You questioned, eyes wide and filled with the smallest sliver of fear as you looked at Liam. You couldn’t decipher what the noise was, only that it was loud and low and it didn’t sound good… at all.
Liam wanted to say something sarcastic about him obviously hearing the noise, he was a werewolf after all. But you didn’t know his secret and it wasn’t exactly the right time to be sassy when there was the possibility of an unknown predator lurking within the walls of the tunnel with you.
“I think we should go.” His voice was hushed as he pulled gently on your elbow, pulling you in the opposite direction the noise, towards the entrance of the mine-shaft. It was impossible to know if you were heading in the direction, there was no way to see the entrance of the mine-shaft but Liam took his best chances, having to partially drag you behind you by your hand as he tried to lead you both to safety.
“Come on, Y/N.” he hissed behind you, fear creeping through his veins, not for himself but for you. He was fairly confident he would be able to defend himself against any predator but you, you were human.
“I cant feel my damn legs, Liam.” You cried a little to loudly than intended. Liam’s eyes widened as he took in your pale face in the poorly lit tunnel. It seemed as if you were paralyzed by fear, a feeling you had never experienced before. Your body was breaking out in a cold sweat as your breathing became uneven as an unshakeable amount of fear settled on your chest, making it harder for you to breath.
It was then that your phone died.
The torch light immediately went out as your phone screen went black and you had to stop yourself from crying out in frustration at the sight. You and Liam appeared dumb-struck as both of you tried to process the situation. Liam looked at his own phone to check how much battery he had left.
You began moving immediately, your actions robotic as you tried to keep up with Liam’s fast pace, both of you acknowledging how urgent the situation was. Neither of you wanted to be trapped in the tunnels when his phone died, which would leave you blind and weak and vulnerable to the works of whatever was watching you.
The sound of your footsteps thumping against the leaf-covered floor and your labored breathing filled the deafening silence that seemed to suffocate the both of you as you moved throughout the tunnel. All of Liam’s senses were on high alert and he could feel the thing that was with them watching them, getting closer to them noiselessly.
And then it happened. It attacked.
It lunged at you first, clawing at your legs and knocking you to the ground. The tunnels were filled with the echoing, deafening noises of your screams, Liam’s yells of your name and the creatures unfamiliar hissing. You felt its claws break the skin of your calf and felt the flow of blood that trailed down from the gaping wounds it left as it lunged for you again.
It hovered over your body, its breath hitting your face as it seemed to sniff your skin, remembering your scent before it hissed again, its retile-like tongue flicking over the skin of your neck. You whimpered and closed your eyes as you wished for it to be quick, feeling its claws scrape over your jacket in a deadly caress.
From there everything seemed to happen in slow motion. You saw Liam’s phone drop from his hands, the light from the torch clearly illuminating the creatures face as you cautiously opened one eye, having to resist the urge to scream again as you saw it in the light. Everything about it was reptilian, from its snake-like eyes to the scales that littered its body.
That was when another ear-splitting noise joined the symphony of sounds that were bouncing off the walls of the tunnels. From beside you there was an unmistakably animal-like growl that overpowered every other noise in the tunnels. The creature above you tensed at the noise and slipped off your body immediately. You felt yourself breath the smallest sigh of relief as you tried to crawl away from the creature, seeing that its attention was now elsewhere.
You didn’t dare to make any large movements or noises. You merely shuffled backwards and ignored the pain in your leg until your back hit a wall, stopping you from moving anymore. Then you looked around for Liam, seeing him standing before the creature in a powerful stance, his fists clenched at his sides as if he planned on fighting the creature with his back to you.
“Liam!” you hissed quietly between pursed lips, trying not to draw the creature’s attention back to you, “What the hell are you doing.”
You didn’t get a response. Liam merely lunged for the creature. You wanted to scream at him, call him an idiot, help him. But all you could do was watch the scene unfold, the piercing pain in your leg enabling you from standing.
“Go, Y/N.” he seemed to say but his voice was wrong. His voice was deeper and seemed more animalistic.
He hadn’t looked at you since he had engaged with the creature, understandably and somehow he was winning. The creature was making all sorts of horrific noises; screeching, hissing and yawling while Liam was throwing it around.
It was only when you didn’t move from your spot that Liam finally took a moment to look at you.
No. This was wrong. This wasn’t Liam. The beast that stood before you had hair everywhere and fangs with blood splattered over its face, presumably from the creature it was fighting. The beast didn’t even have Liam’s eyes instead of the gorgeous blue orbs that had comforted you in all of your times of need, you were met with a pair of glowing, golden eyes that reflected the light of the torch easily.
You gasped as you took in the beasts appearance. It was wearing Liam’s clothes but didn’t have his face or voice. Your head was spinning as you tried to take in the situation, loosing more and more blood from your wound with every second that passed.
And then the beast growled once again, pouncing on the creature and launching it several feet away from the both of you. You gasped, watching it soar through the air before it landed on its feet and ran at the beast again. As you watched it get closer to you, you were finally snapped back out of your own thoughts and you reached for Liam’s abandoned phone. You let the light from it flicker around the vicinity for a moment so you could get your bearings before you used the wall to support yourself and stand up.
You cast a lingering look to the beast wearing Liam’s clothes, knowing deep down that beneath the golden eyes was the boy you loved, but being unable to accept that fact as a reality in the moment, you turned and began to hobble away from the scene. Tears ran down your face as you tried to ignore the terrifying snarls, hisses and growls from behind you as you fled, the pain in your leg becoming almost impossible to cope with.
Eventually you had to stop, resting your back against the wall of the tunnel as you caught your breath. You resisted the urge to look down at your leg, afraid of the sight you would be met with as you checked Liam’s phone to see what percentage his battery was on.
You sighed in defeat. You were nowhere near the entrance of the mine-shaft; you and Liam had been exploring for hours before the creature had attacked. You weren’t going to make it out of the tunnels before the phone died. Thankfully, the sounds of the fighting had grown fainter as you moved away from them. You could barely hear them anymore; all you could hear was a gently ringing in your ears.
You closed your eyes and hoped Liam was okay. You could feel your limbs growing heavy and knew you wouldn’t be able to go on for much longer. With any luck, you and Liam would be reported missing and the Sherriff’s Department would find you both before the creature got the chance to kill you.
You didn’t have to open your eyes to know the light of the torch in your hand had gone out. The dark abyss that surrounded you seemed to become impossibly darker the moment the phone died and you let it fall to the ground, followed by your own body as you succumbed to your injuries.
A soft whimper left your lips as you made contact with the brittle floor of the mine and you once again hoped Liam was okay before everything turned infinitely darker.
