Doonagore Castle, Ireland 🏰

Doonagore Castle is located in Doolin, County Clare, Ireland, perched on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Aran Islands. This 16th-century round tower house has a rich history dating back to the 14th century, with the current structure built in the mid-16th century using sandstone from Trá Leachain (Flaggy Beach).

The castle changed hands multiple times, owned by prominent Gaelic clans like the O'Briens and O'Connors. In 1588, it played a dark role in the Spanish Armada's retreat, when 170 survivors were hanged at the castle or nearby Cnocán an Crochaire (Hangman's Hill). The castle fell into disrepair but was restored in the 19th and 20th centuries, and is now a private holiday home owned by the Gorman family.
