This movie about cheer, will make you want to sneer! We review the SIXTH (and probably final) movie in the Bring it On series. With inconsistent accents, a mystery location and a competition that doesn't matter (at all) this movie is a cheer-tastrophe! Â We discuss the lack of acting and cheer chops, attempts at 'feminism', the simultaneous condemnation and praise of social media and the international politics of cheer.
Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack (2017) Review!
Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack is a 2017 teen sport comedy film. Directed by Robert Adetuyi and written by Alyson Fouse it is the 6th film in the Bring It On franchise and the sequel to 2009âs Bring It On: Fight to the Finish. When Destiny, captain of the three-time national champion cheerleading squad âThe Rebelsâ is challenged to a global cheer showdown by an edgy new team called âThe Truthâ, the Cheer Goddess organizes a virtual battle for squads from all around the world.
As a big fan of the Bring It On series I was surprised to learn of a 6th instalment and was instantly apprehensive. Due to the movie being released 8 years after the previous one, with such a long gap between movies this has to go further than the others had in order to be impressive and capture my interest. I suspected I was in for a bumpy road when I saw the title had a â#â in it, typically Iâve found that any film title that includes a â#â has just given itself the kiss of death. Of all the movies in the series this one was undoubtedly the worst. While not a complete flop this is still one I will have trouble trying to watch again when I binge watch the series in the future. The film has an abundance of mixed messages and over the top unnecessary modern day depictions of millennials and their behaviour, so much so at times I felt as though my IQ was dropping points by the minute.
One of the messages in this movie is about how social media plays a dominating role in the lives of people today and how we should learn to look beyond post likes and Instagram followers. However, this message gets drowned out and becomes pointless when the movie displays social media hashtags from beginning to end and has its character speaking in hashtags which is probably the most annoying part of the dialogue, right behind the lead trying to turn every word into feminist speak by putting âfemâ at the start of the word which is by far the most illiterate, counterproductive piece of writing Iâve seen in a while. If that was meant to promote female empowerment I have two words, EPIC FAIL.
Our lead and team captain Destiny, played by Cristine Prosperi, is a controlling self-centred character who goes through a clichĂ© epiphany about her behaviour towards those around her, which in the other movies made sense, but in relation to this character it doesnât work due to the fact it is established that the character has always been this way, so why is she changing now? Logically it just doesnât work and so this amazing message of self-growth is wasted. One of the other big fails is the opposing squad known as âTruthâ which takes absurdity to the extreme. They are the Anonymous of the cheer world. Viral, computer hacking cheerleaders whose name alone is another counterproductive aspect of the film. Not the brightest idea to name a team âTruthâ when the team consists of members of the original team who lied, cheated and backstabbed to get back at their captain. Not much truth there if you ask me.
The cheer choreography was of course good and gives me muscle cramps just watching but Iâm not entirely sure if as a 6th instalment it pushed things far enough. It wasnât very impressive and it didnât come off as original. It just felt extremely stale, much like the majority of this movie. The entire movie comes off one dimensional, there just isnât much to focus on or be entranced by, even the use of a Lady Gaga song couldnât save it. While I can at least say the acting from the cast was on point and didnât come off as first-time actors just desperate for a job, the material they were given was very bland.
After 8 years this movie was not worth bringing the series back, it fails to live up to the previous instalments and for a movie about cheerleaders who are meant to excite people, I sit here not remotely excited. It takes the worst aspects of the modern era and puts them into a movie while over emphasising social media culture to the point where it kills the story and ultimately the movie itself. If youâre a fan of the series then by all means watch it just so you can feel you completed the franchise. However, if you are not a fan of Bring It On then I recommend avoiding this movie because watching it will only make you hate the series more. For all the reasons above I give Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack a rating of 1.5/5 crystal balls.
Iâve always dreamed that my life could be a like a fairytale, a perfect fantasy. But it was nothing moreâŠthan a dream.
Hey, I got an idea. Why donât we tell them our story? The Lion King 1œ (2004)

the worst lines from Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack
âYou see, in the real world, we handle our battles on social media. So get ready to use up all your data, âcause my planâs unlimited.â
âI dont sweat, I glisten.â
âLesbionic Lisaâ
âSo, you think we can just walk in here and pluck male cheerleaders like unibrows?â
âIf I had a choice between your Rebels and the Crips, Iâd be a gangbanger.â
âI hates tests. My dad gave me one for DNA before he left and I think I failed because⊠Well⊠Well now my uncle lives with us.â
âI thought every cheerleader was named Amber and Britney. What? Itâs a theory.â
âhashtag *random ass word*â thoughout the entire goddamn movie
âDid the truth shake you down to the soles of your trainers?â
âIâve never even left the country. Well, except to go to Hawaii.â
âHannah, you give the best facials on the squad.â âYeah, mom says itâs good practice for when I get married.â
apparently non-cheerleaders wonât be able to decipher the meaning behind a âźâ€ïžđŁ tattoo
âAfter weâre done here, youâre gonna realize that your cheers are so old, youâre gonna need a landline to dial them in.â
âWhat a tasty piece of spirit candy!â
0/10 donât waste your time watching this lackluster disgrace of a Bring It On movie
You missed the gem:Â âWhy did the cheerleader get mad she got her drivers license? Because she got an F in sex!â
I still donât get it.
