Current Projects

White Hat Complex - superhero world, wildly huge cast of characters. Typically they do genre standard things, although there is a lot of lore specific to that world. There's also a divergent timeline that almost never comes up.

Characters: Fox, Darren, Perry, Priscilla, Corinth, Clarence, Keshawn, Saul, Ash, Judge, tons more but those are the ones I have as main cast in any longer portion I think

some demons and time travel - I thought to myself, let's just throw all the different genre tropes in together. So this is set in the far future (and also recent past) and has lots of scifi tech, magic, magical creatures, angels and demons, mutants, superheroes, secret government experimentation, and time travel of several flavors. They have to complete a prophecy.

Characters: Ficus, Tardigrade, Copernicus, Gabriel, Derek, Jane, Tiff, Katie, Ephemera, Ulysses, The Angel and The Demon, Ficus's Patron, Pinky, Hazel

chosen ones - magical world, about a group of friends who went on essentially a portal adventure together, then came back and had to live out the rest of their lives. They're eighteen now, legally speaking, but have lived a dozen lifetimes together they tend not to relate to their peers or anyone but each other very well.

Characters: Andy, Imlan, Chance, Trixie, The Heart of Magic, several others I have to finalize if I really want to call them that

River Jones Totally Can Lie - faerie world, starring a bunch of fae (mostly half-human). Most people - human and fae alike - hate our central figure, who has both fae magic and the human ability to lie, and also is kind of a douchebag. Who keeps stealing people's dogs. Which they claim is okay because the dogs really like them, and all of their friends are losing their minds about it.

Characters: River, Watercress, Laurel, Christmas Cactus, Amburana. I think I need two more characters to fill out the questing party but I haven't invented them yet.

board certified necromancer - magical world, although this one has time travel, too. Our main character got cloned and lost a huge amount of its memories, and now has to deal with a bunch of bureaucratic bullshit while trying to remember what it was supposed to be doing back in the recent past. Which is hopefully not murder or something; because there was a murder recently and it's, honestly, very worried about that.

Characters: Hyperion II, Hyperion I, David, Branwen, Moe, Greg and Otis, Elise. There's a bunch of side characters who aren't that fleshed out, but I could've sworn I had a fully planned out character to be Hype and Elise's classmate/other best friend and now I have no idea where I put my notes for her.

An Ordering Of Keys - multigenerational narrative that follows members of a family through a pre- and post-apocalyptic magical world, trying to heal both familial trauma and the actual planet. Many, many different perspectives, although most of them will show up once or twice. If I ever finish this novel it's probably going to be pretty hard to read but at least I can ramble semi-coherently.

Characters: Brad, Charlie, Zach, Nikki, a whole bunch of others that are just names in a list so far because I haven't figured out their roles in the story yet. Possibly Charlie's name will change.

sexy werewolves - magical world where werewolves and mages soulbond in what was originally an attempt to destroy vampires and now just keeps magic running smoothly. This one's meant to be erotica but I'll be honest I have very little sex written down and a lot of other bullshit going on.

Characters: Reynard, Daniel, Randy, Chris, Pix. There are other characters in this world but I don't think I've posted basically anything about it so I don't know when they would've come up. There is actually a Darren in this one, too.

The Genderswap Gun

Storyverse: WHC Characters: Fox, Perry, Priscilla @flashfictionfridayofficial

“The alien is this way,” I say, waving Perry and Priscilla in after me like it’s not a lost cause trying to keep them from getting distracted by all the artifacts. 

“Why does this sign say Genderswap Gun?” Perry asks, stopping again, poking at the artifact. “What is this thing?” 

“It’s a Genderswap Gun, like it says on the sign, Perry, it swaps your gender,” I tell her, about to add yet another reminder not to touch the artifacts, when Priscilla picks it up and uses it. Now there’s evidence we’ve been down here. I mean, there was going to be evidence when the alien went missing, but now there’s probably fingerprints. “Priscilla,” I practically whine. 

“Oh my god,” she says, patting down her chest and arms like that’s going to do anything. “It stole my gender. I already only had half of one of those! I needed that!” 

“Really?” Perry asks, and I’m already trying to grab for the thing when she turns it on herself. “Cool! Let me see.” 

“Perry, don’t,” I say, reflexively, as if that’s any more helpful than trying to get her to stop dodging me, but she’s already set it off. Her fingerprints are on record, too. 

“What the hell?” she says, pointing an accusing finger at me. “You said this thing was going to take my gender away, not add more of them!” 

“I didn’t say anything of the sort, Perry. I didn’t say anything about that thing at all,” I remind her, no longer trying to keep quiet. If anyone can hear us, they’ve already heard us. This project may be doomed anyway. “What I said was, and I distinctly remember wording it exactly like this, ‘don’t touch the artifacts.’” 

“You could’ve told me it wasn’t going to give me a dick. I would’ve left it alone,” Priscilla tells me, like it’s reasonable that she sounds reasonable. 

“Why would it do that?” I don’t quite yell. “It’s a Genderswap Gun, not a Sexswap Gun, why the hell would it have done anything to your body?” 

“Well, I don’t know. The sign doesn’t say anything else,” Priscilla tells me, still sounding like she has any reason to sound reasoned. 

“Why did it give me so many?” Perry asks, turning puppy eyes on me like I have anything to do with any of this. I was telling them not to touch anything for a good goddamn reason. It’s not like I can fix it. 

“It is an alien artifact, Perry Hall, you know better than anyone that we don’t know why they do what they do,” I snap, and then, at Priscilla’s miserable look, add, “it’ll wear off in about 72 hours. And, yes, if you try it again it’ll almost certainly have the same effect. It seems to be consistent for a single person, even if there’s no other pattern.” 

“You could’ve told us that,” Perry says, like she didn’t lunge for the gun immediately after it was clear it was a bad idea to lunge for the gun. “Like, clearly you learned about this thing a long time ago. You might’ve mentioned.” 

“It’s classified!” I say, gesturing at where we’ve broken into. 

“Okay? Lots of things are classified. Everything about the alien is classified and you told us all about that, so what gives?” Perry asks. I think she’s high again. 

“I had to tell you about the alien or you wouldn’t have helped me free it,” I tell her, crossing my arms. Priscilla’s taken her side, because of course she has. “I’m not just going to tell you random information for fun. That thing doesn’t have any lives at stake.” I gesture vaguely at the Genderswap Gun, then realize I should set it back on the shelf. Someone’s going to realize it’s been moved, but they’re going to realize it’s been fired anyway. 

“I feel like maybe if you’d wanted to be whistleblowing you ought to have talked to a reporter, hon,” Priscilla says, shaking her head at me very seriously. “I don’t know that we were the best people to ask along on this adventure.” 

“I asked Perry because she’s willing to do dangerous shit on no notice, and she’s got too many political connections to disappear and too many social ones to keep locked up,” I tell Priscilla, not that it sounds quite as thought through all the way down here. The creature really does look like it’s dying, though. “You invited yourself along for the ride.” 

“Well, that’s because you were suggesting an adventure and I wasn’t about to get myself left behind,” Priscilla tells me, with a snort, like I’m the one acting crazy here. “You can’t just go saying things like that and expect people not to take you up on it.” 

“For fuck’s sake,” I say, regretting every single person I reassured I was happy being point man on this project. We should’ve actually organized an op. At this point, I’m even reconsidering whether it’s all that important to make it seem like there was no one on the inside involved in all of this. “Can we rescue the alien, please?” 

“You know, it’s my contact as has any idea what all to do with the creature, so it would’ve been awful rude to exclude me anyway,” Priscilla says, raising an eyebrow. “Or, hopefully does, seeing as you won’t even tell us what kind it is.” 

“Look, the agency’s best guess is my best guess, and they’ve got no fucking clue,” I admit, prying open the keypad as haphazardly as I can without setting off any alarms. “We’re just all pretty much in agreement it probably wants to be outside. I think it needs sunlight.” 

“Maybe we should dissect it,” Perry says, brightly, and at my horrified look, adds, “you used to be able to take a joke, Foxie. You’re not being much fun today. Have you noticed that?” as Priscilla nods in sympathetic agreement.

Baird's Pocket Gopher Geomys breviceps

Found in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas states in the US. It burrows underground and while making its nests obtains food from the roots of different plants in its tunnels. The gophers store the food they gather in small pockets that look like black slits called "cheek pouches" on the side of their head, which is where the name "pocket gopher" originates.

FFF 359 One More Chance

He took deep, centering breaths, the type his grandfather had taught him to take before loosing an arrow, and willed his hands to still and his face to impassivity. Mages needed to be stoic, committed, and firm of purpose, or else the magic would devour them. The Academy lost several student mages every year, even with their rigid and grueling application process. Some reached too far too fast and called down forces they could not control, some cracked under the pressure of their studies and let their desperation fuel them until they became the fuel themselves… And some grew careless, glutted on the ease of their previous accomplishments. They learned too late that magic was a tool that, when carelessly discarded, took on its own purpose.

Rumour held that even worse things happened to students at the Academy. To those that might question the Mage’s Council. To those that did not bow deeply enough before High Archmagus Elena. Things that turned charismatic and engaged young men and women into puppets of their masters, or disappeared them all together.

Arnold’s grandfather had warned him of the mages, repeated all the stories he’d ever heard in an attempt to convince him not to go, but Arnold wasn’t fooled. His mother hadn’t disappeared, she had run away. She’d been too proud to tell her powerful family that she’d gotten pregnant by a farmboy with more life than anyone she’d ever met in her cold and shuttered city. She’d simply left, and the Academy had never attempted to find her.

She’d been happy with his father. Arnold remembered them. They had been dancing in the kitchen, laughing and so very happy when her magic, purposefully bred into her line generations ago, had attempted to fulfil her careless wish. It had encased them both in crystal, a crystal which swiftly spread through the kitchen in an attempt to preserve everything… A crystal which had shattered, his parents with it, when he had felt his own magic swell for the first time, summoned by sheer terror.

Arnold understood the Mage’s Creed very well indeed. The truth was the Academy didn’t need to dispose of young mages, the magic did that itself. Mages were cold, calculating, and indifferent because they had to be. Anything else was death.

Arnold’s death, if he couldn’t manage to pass this blasted entrance interview! He’d scraped through the written theory, bluffed what he didn’t know in the ethics interrogation, and was now on his fifth practical demonstration. Only five in his cohort of hundreds had even had two practicals, and in his opinion it was just to give a few with family backing but a poor showing a second chance. And then there was him.

The farmboy. The bumpkin. The grotesque dullard who haunted these accursed halls, his face telling the story of his magic only too clearly.

The only one in the whole history of the Academy to have the entire Great Working theatre full of mages judging his fifth practical. 

He knew they didn’t want him in. It was obvious to everyone. But he couldn’t let that stop him. He could feel his magic growing within him every day and if he didn’t get at least some guidance in how to harness it, it was going to consume him.

This was his last chance. There were no more people they could bring in to judge him. It all came down to this. If he failed, that would be the end of him. The spells he was planning for this demonstration would assure it. And if he passed… It would be a beginning, at least. The beginning of a life of logic, of coldness, and of caution. But at least it would be a life. So long as he could keep that, perhaps one day he might even get to see his grandfather again.

“What did I tell you?” High Archmagus Elena crowed as she swept her heavy mantle off in the privacy of her own chambers. “Isn’t he just the best? That vision! That grace! That cleverness! I’ve never even heard of someone using Tel’noth’s Whispering Wind like that before and he not only attempted it, he pulled it off!”

“I’m surprised.” Her best friend admitted, settling into the chair by the fire and summoning her cross stitch project. “I have to admit I wasn’t sure what to expect. I really wasn’t expecting someone who managed to do that to their face to still have magic that strong, let alone to have that sort of control!”

“He didn’t do that to himself.” Both Elena and her lover, who was helping her with the ties on her robes, chorused. He paused, allowing her to continue alone. “Cassandra did.”

Isabelle sputtered on the tea she’d just sipped in complete shock. “Your sister did that to him? How? When? Those are old scars, she did that to a child?”

“Not on purpose.” Elena replied, growing more serious. “Cass was my twin. I felt it the moment she died. Felt all of it.”

“I investigated on Elena’s behalf.” Jonathan continued, picking up the story with ease. “Her magic tangled itself up with some very powerful emotions, and she didn’t practice enough to be able to separate them. The boy was able to save himself, but not his parents. The scars on his face are not the only ones he carries from that night.”

“It’s best that he keep those scars.” Elena commented, shooting Isabelle, an accomplished healer, a pointed look. “Without them he’d attract far too much attention of a sort he cannot afford. My father would hear of him, and he’d recognize him as blood in a heartbeat. He never forgave Cass for running away, and he’d feel entitled to the lad. While I only want what’s best for him, Father would just want him. And he wouldn’t care how he got him.”

One More Chance

For @flashfictionfridayofficial's prompt of "One More Chance". Turns out, getting rid of your ability to reset time means that you get rid of the crutch helping you protect your person.

"ALEC!"

Charlie was at his side faster than her own brain could process, her hands wrapping around his skull. Warm marrow slid across her hands. He groaned as her flesh jostled the loose shards of bone that had to be there. "Shit, shit, you're gonna be okay-"

She needed to go back. She needed to make sure this couldn't happen!

She couldn't lose Alec. She didn't care if he loved her, if he hated her, if he didn't give a shit about her. Knowing he was alive, knowing he was close...

He was her security blanket, just like she knew she was his security blanket.

She held her hand out. "Just one more chance," she said, unsure if she was trying to reason with herself or him. "Just to make sure this doesn't happen." She could fix things, she could make sure this didn't happen, whether stopping the human's attack or making sure Alec wasn't here.

No coldness washed over her.

No button appeared.

Charlie froze.

Oh. Right.

She had destroyed the button.

She was out of "one more chance".

...She had to make sure Alec survived this on her own.

"Fuck."
